Q:Not sure what seed my service uses every year, but it always looks pretty good. OTOH, I'd like to get a little better thicker stand this year. Can I lay down a light even second seeding and will it blend well?

1 Answer
Answer This Question

A:  Scotts Turf Builder Perennial Ryegrass Mix Seed will mix well in any combination of Bluegrass, Ryegrass or Fine Fescues lawns. It may be too late to seed depending on your location. Seed needs to be planted 4-6 weeks before the first frost.

We bought from Home Depot several bags of Scotts Perennial Ryegrass Mix to patch up and also overseed our backyard and front lawn. We followed the instructions and with mixed feelings about the results we get and that is why we are giving 3 stars and a YES recommendation. We do not know how to analyze the content of the mixture but something really puzzles us. From attached photos, you can see seeds from one bag germinate profusely with dense grass why some seeds from another bag, when applied, germinate as expected but with a lot of cilantro like weeds (called weeds as they are not grass to us). these so called weeds form a firm network mesh that give us the bouncy feeling when we walk on it, like dense carpet. We did not have this kind of weeds before our overseeding. We thought the bag must have been contaminated and tried to plug them by hand, but after a few full buckets we became tired and decided to leave them there, after all from the attached photos, if you look from afar, it still looks like a beautiful and lavish green lawn. Hopefully these cilantro like weeds will be overwhelmed by the real ryegrass and disappear in time. Let us pray!!!

We are sorry that you did not receive the expected outcome with the seed. All of our seed is thoroughly cleaned and is 99.9% weed seed free. Soil preparation can bring weed seeds to the surface. If you have other concerns or questions, please contact us at 877-220-3089. scotts

Planted in early November on a piece of lawn that refuses to grow grass. I covered it with a straw mate and it’s growing pretty well. So far I’m happy. We’ll see come spring.

Response from Scotts Consumer ServicesNov 28, 2022
We're sorry to read about your disappointment with Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Perennial Ryegrass Mix and appreciate your feedback.

For Cool Season Grasses (Bluegrass/Rye/Fescue) Soil temperatures must be at least 55 degrees (+12.7 Celsius) for Grass Seed to germinate. Cool night time temperatures and fluctuating temperatures will slow germination. Both excessive moisture and not enough moisture can inhibit seed germination.

We want you to be confident in our products. For this reason, we offer a product guarantee to our consumers. At your earliest convenience, please reach out to us at 877-220-3089 if we can further assist. Scotts
