My pump turns on the way it should but doesn't turn off when the tub is empty, I have to unplug it or turn off the basement light switch. Is there an adjustment or does something need replaced? Thank you
Asked by: Al
This is actually a 2 part question. First is pump is new (only a year or so old) the adjustment is on the top of the switch diaphragm housing. Loosen the lock nut, turn the brass piece which the wire is attached to in a counter clockwise direction. Do not grab the wire, turn the brass piece. You will need to try 1/2 turn adjustments, re-tightening lock nut to hold in place. Note: this will also raise the level of water needed to turn the unit on. Second part: If unit is older, the diaphragms are only good for about 9 years more or less depending on how harsh you water and detergents are. If it is of around this age, all you need to do is replace the diaphragm with a new one from the manufacturer without making any changes to switch adjustment. Problem should be solved. Diaphragms are about $10. Hope this helps.

I don't understand how adjusting the brass tube can change when the pump turns on. Impeller isn't spinning to change pressure

Asked by: Mitch
I agree that it is very counter intuitive to think it would make a difference in the on and off characteristics especial when you consider that before the unit comes on the impeller is not spinning. However it does. If you were t pull that copper tube all the way out you would notice that it is not opened at the end. It has just a small slit in the end. You sometimes people need to clean junk out of the slit with there finger nail because it gets clogged. By moving the tube in and out the static pressure created by the water in the sink pushes on the air column in the tube with varying force and changes the characteristics.

Can the quick mount fitting be cut down?

Asked by: Bryan
If you are asking about the plastic tube and collar that comes with unit, I would say no. However, I needed to reduce a bit of distance between sink drain and unit housing to match up with the existing riser connection. What I did was purchase a collar, reducer, and short nipple that fits the threads where you would remove the plastic tube from. Assemble these with Teflon tape, and you will reduce the distance by about 3/4 inch or so. Be careful not to overtighten the steel collar connection to the plastic sink drain.

My pump will not come on automatically. Is there something I need to adjust? I have moved the copper tube both ways.

Asked by: Kd10
Typically these work right out of the box. But when adjustment is needed you can do that by sliding the copper capillary tube in and out of the volute. That is the copper tube that the rubber hose is attached to. The volute is the chamber where the impeller spins. There is a small slit at thj end of this tube, you want to make sure it is not clogged. If you need further help you can reach us at Shellback at 248 544 4600

When I built my home in 1988, I installed this pump under the laundry tubs in the basement. There are few things in life that work as well as this pump, now, 29 years later (2017), the only thing I have had to do to this pump is change the diaphragm about once every 9 to 10 years. The rubber hardens from exposure to water and detergents which causes the switch to stay on once sink has drained. When this begins happening, change the diaphragm which is just 3 screws, and you are good for another 9 to 10 years. Presently, I just purchased a diaphragm from the manufacturer for $10. If purchasing this pump, you will also want to purchase the brass anti-back flow valve, and I put a brass union between pump and back flow valve. Another thing I liked about this pump, is that if I just washed my hands in the sink and only ran a bit of water, there is a manual switch that you can use to turn the pump on and off when water depth isn't enough to activate the automatic switch. If you turn it on manually, you must also turn it off manually. To activate automatic switch, water depth is about 7 or 8 inches. Hope this helps in making your choice, as good products are sometimes hard to find if we don't share information.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from shellback laundry pump This is a high quality product. Runs very quiet. Be advised you need a 3/4" check valve not included in the box and Home Depot does not stock it in the store. It may however be ordered at Home depot on line. I picked up a check valve at a local plumbing supplier.
