They sell a rodent guard for it otherwise it's totally opened to the ground.
The best way to avoid this is by having 2 or 3 composers. separating the fresh compost in one compost bin. Using the remaining bins for aging the rest. Two bins will work but ultimately you should have three bins. the third for finished compost.
The compost inside the machine gets warm but not too warm. It will not get warm enough to actually burn anyone, not even close. It is extremely safe to have in the yard it might get as warm as a plastic chair that sits in the sun on your deck/patio.
Depends on the weather and the contents. When it's really cold outside, things freeze before they break down. But in the summer, it only takes a few weeks for soft items to end up looking like deep, dark dirt. I love this product, but I have one word of warning: Squirrels! They were chewing through the plastic slats on the sides. I fixed this by wrapping the base tightly in chicken wire. Poor squirrels now have to find their meals elsewhere. No problems since then.
Yes, you should stir the compost to keep all different component nicely mixed.
No chemicals required. I've had mine for about 6 months and am seeing the beginning of the soil I'm looking for at the bottom. Just keep stirring what's in there.
no, there is no bottom. It's open and just plastic screws hold it to the yard.
Yes, it needs to be stirred or turned over with a compost aerator, hoe or pitchfork. If you turn it at least once a week you will add air, which is necessary for composting. If that does not sound like something you want to do, look at the composters that turn.
Yes, I live in northern Illinois and my first one lasted 17 years.
Yes worms will find it! Mine almost always has worms in it. They will come and go based on how warm it is inside of the composter.
