Product Overview

  • Just add water; material expands to 5x packaged size
  • Designed to increase nutrient retention and natural aeration
  • 100% natural coir material that has been flushed of excess sodium
Coconut coir bricks are composed of three different types of compressed coconut coir. This high quality, low sodium growing medium is an environmentally friendly alternative to sphagnum peat moss. When hydrated with water, bricks and blocks rapidly expand which saves you time and effort. They can be exclusively used by themselves, blended together or mixed with expanded clay pellets, perlite or topsoil. The brick will break down on its own in three years. Better still, you can run it through a chipper and amend your soil with it. Incredibly strong, it makes a better candidate for use with enzyme products that convert roots to biomass.
  • Each brick makes up to 18 Gal. of ready-to-use soilless media
  • Optimum air to water ratio
  • Increases nutrient retention and provides essential aeration
  • Expands to 5 times its packaged size
  • Great for outdoor gardening
  • 100% organic coir fiber
  • Flushed of excess sodium

Can this be stored after opening? Asking because I might not need to use the entire brick.
Asked by: matt
Absolutely. I have had some of mine stored for almost a year and it had only absorbed a small amount of moisture from the air. I would suggest storing in a sealed container or a plastic bag, to keep out bugs. You may also want to look for multi packs of smaller bricks for easier storage.

how do people use this as a seed starter? i will be planting chilli pepper seeds

Asked by: Robert
Let it soak until it is fully saturated and it will make an excellent seed starter, but so does a wet paper towel. This works by providing moisture without drowning the seed. Or, mix it 50/50 with some soil and then you can grow your seedlings until they are ready to transplant outside. It prevents the soil from compacting and provides moisture.

The block is highly compact so it is a challenge trying get use small portions for use re-potting plants and seedlings, but a hammer and chisel worked well. I plan to purchase another block to incorporate into my garden soil along with some compost.

I put in the coco coir, added some vermiculite and water, and it expanded into beautiful potting soil. LOTS of potting soil. The free delivery was a real convenience. I'll undoubtedly order more in the future.

I haven't had much experience with coconut coir, but I bought a bigger brick of a different brand after two blocks of Viagrow, and it really pointed out how much the Viagrow raised my expectations. Compared to the other block, which was only $5 cheaper, the Viagrow has no sand filler, great color, great texture, and most importantly, AMAZING absorption ability. It was like one of those kids sponges where you add water and it expands out into a dinosaur shape fifty times the pellet's size (no dinosaur shape with the coconut, sadly). I poured hot water steadily across the top of the block, and very little of it was able to drip down because it absorbed so fast. The block expanded up like the aforementioned sponge. It was really fun to run my hands through the hot coconut on a cold winter morning as I threw the expanded material into a separate bin (it made too much to fit in my wheelbarrow - two blocks filled a 32-gallon trash bin). The off-brand block I bought required me to claw and scrape the wet layers off a centimeter at a time because the water didn't absorb, and it was almost easier to grind the dry stuff down by hand before wetting it, but with the Viagrow I barely had to brush the rehydrated stuff off. It wet quickly and consistently through the layers. Just make sure your water is warm/hot, you don't dump it all on at once, and you pour it directly onto the brick. I can't say much about the salt content, but it was clear of visible sand (the off-brand one was loaded with sand), didn't have any chunks of foreign matter embedded (again, the off-brand had several pieces of debris), and it didn't have any really bothersome clumps of fiber. The absorption quality makes a huge difference, though. Don't underestimate it until you have to spend 4 hours clawing oversaturated coconut coir off a dry block sitting in a pool of water.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice product This is a nice growing medium. I really didn't know what to expect when I ordered this product but i wanted something to add to my potting soil that would absorb moisture and hold it in the potting container longer than just plain potting soil. It came as a large square brick. I opened it up in a large plastic container and poured water on it, so that I could break it up. It absorbed the water really well as I added water slowly over the couse of around an hour or so. It is easy to separate when wet, but not when dry. A great benefit is that it has no odor and blended great with my potting soil. I am planting a bunch of small plants and starting some seeds indoors in this mixture and it's working great. So far I highly recommend this product as an addition to your potting soil. I forgot I had it for about 9 months before I used it, and it doesn't break down over time!
