Questions & Answers

Can you make a circle with this product to go around a tree flower bed, and if so how do you keep it connected

Asked by: Rerun55
I think it depends on how wide of a circle you're making. I tried to run it around a fairly small circle (maybe a little over 3-feet across) around one of my trees and I wasn't happy with the resulting spaces between the border sections. The material simply doesn't bend enough to complete smaller circles cleanly.

When I cut to make a 45 degree, I will loose the alignment holes. I realize I can redrill new holes, but how do I attach to the next piece? Are the alignment pins flexible? Or will I need to use glue?
Asked by: Rmoabman1
I suppose you could try gluing them together, but I imagine that you would be able to fit the two 45-degree pieces together pretty snugly in a way that no additional connection would be needed. Also, if you cut the pieces so there's a hole near each of the cut ends, that would help keep them secured in place.

Customer Reviews

EcoBorder 4 ft. Green Rubber Landscape Edging (6-Pack) is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 387.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Use a sledge hammer Not sure what I think. It does look nice, especially in shorter sections. It is flexible and bends nicely. I think it becomes challenging to use when you're trying to install it as a border across the entire stretch of your yard. I have a steep front yard and I tried to use this border to go over 50 feet to try to stop erosion. Two challenges presented themselves: 1) it is hard to keep the border even as you go across so that it looks nice, straight and clean. 2) it is also hard, as other comments have noted, to pound the plastic stakes into rocky ground. My yard is especially rocky and I busted the cap off 3 or 4 of the stakes. The caveat to all of this is that: 1) I should have taken more time to make sure the borders were nice and straight and 2) I should have used a sledge hammer, not a regular hammer, to pound in the stakes. I think this is crucial. A sledge hammer provides much more strength and does a much better job of driving the stake in without breaking off the cap of the spike. Hope this helps!

Two plastic nails broke even being extremely careful. I held a rubber mallet on the nails and tapped the mallet with a hammer which prevented off center hits. Flaws in the plastic caused the breaks. You can see in the attached photo that both pieces have an air pocket in them. Extra nails should be included. Two packages did not have both of the joining pins included. Not a problem for me as I had extra pins but for someone else it could have caused a work stoppage. Vigoro should should consider creating small corner pieces for 90 degree corners that could be sold as an optional item. Cutting two 45 degree corners with a saw is not an elegant nor easy solution. Other than that, this product along with matching rubber mulch is going to save me a ton of work and money over the next few years. Easy to use and looks good.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from So many compliments Bought this edging to replace bricks placed around our flower beds. The bricks had to be removed twice a year, clear cut edged, lifted and dirt added to raise them, and remove the runners from our turf that would go between the bricks. Pressure washing also was a requirement. Although our new border did not come out perfectly tight due to some of the bends we needed, we are very pleased with the product and have twice since ordered additional. As others have suggested, installation of the curving pieces followed by the straighter it much easier to manage. A bit expensive but the hoped for elimination of former maintenance will be worth it. Now that the front is almost finished dear hubby wants to continue the edging all around our house. When we moved into our house 5 years ago I hoped to put concrete edging around the beds. But this edging was easy to do and gives flexibility that concrete can't in the event we want to make changes later on. We have had many compliments from neighbors about how the black we choose gives the yard a rich, neat, clean look.

JUNK...If you live in a place with bad winters (Upstate NY), this product WILL heave up and the stakes will need to be pounded back into the ground every spring. The pieces themselves WILL separate as well, which further compounds the problem. The stakes DO NOT prevent frost/winter heave because they have no barbs to keep them securely in the ground. Stick to stone or regular edging that's trenched, staked and back filled with dirt. This is an easy install, but DOESN'T hold up after a bad winter! BUYER BEWARE!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect edging for a swing set play area I was looking for an edging material for a backyard play area. I looked at a number of different products but they were either too hard a material to create a safe play area, too time consuming to install properly or too costly. The EcoBorder edging turn out to be the perfect choice. It was very easy to work with. I connected the pieces together and laid out the shape of the play area. Once I had the desired layout, all I had to do was hammer in the stakes. It took me under 2 hours to complete the installation of 96' of edging. It looks great and there is no issue with safety. I'm looking forward to being able to mow without having to trim around the edges. I would definitely recommend this product and will be adding it to many of the planting beds around my house.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not Cheap but Worth the Money We installed about 150' of this border and it looks great. All the neighbors are commenting on how nice it looks, too. A couple of tips: First, watch the pricing. When we purchased it we found that is was less expensive to buy the individual pieces than it was to order by the case of 6. Makes no sense but that's what it was. Second, the plastic spikes that come with it won't work well in hard or rocky soil. Buy some 8" galvanized spikes in the hardware aisle and use them if necessary. Finally, we had to put in a border where a garden ran along a paver walk because every rain storm was washing mulch onto the walk. We reversed the borders so the flange and spikes were on the garden side and under the mulch.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy installation and meets our needs We are using the ecoborder edging on our flower beds to maintain groundcover rocks on our mature landscaping beds. It is easy to install (a 56 year old woman who is doing the installation). I really like the multiple stake holes in the border. This allows me to not install a stake if there is an obstacle in the ground (i.e. fence post concrete). I don't know how it will perform over the winter as there may be frost heave, but I do not anticipate that will be difficult to fix. The border is also easy to cut with a circular saw allowing us to make nice corners at the junction. Keeping the corner together doesn't happen without a little extra help. It would be nice to have a corner piece that would insure a 90 or a way to keep the two sides of a corner nicely joined. Though the border is expensive, I do consider it a good value because I believe it will last as long if not longer than concrete and remain flexible allowing for adjustments to placement as roots grow (not breakage). I also think it will remain attractive throughout its life.

I used the EcoBorder to replace steel barriers that had rusted and become sharp/jagged. Because I had had the previous barrier I didn't need any other preparation; I just lay down the EcoBorder and drove the spikes. The sections attach to each other with 2 small spikes to provide a continuous appearance. The test will be performance over time. I'm optimistic because of the sturdiness of the product.
