A:  Wakefield recommends 10% by volume in the soil for planting. That means a 1 cubic foot bag will work very well in the top few inches of an 8'x4' garden (32 sq/ft). For lawn care, you can spread this over 375 sq/ft of lawn. It's preferred to aerate the lawn before application.

A:  Broadcast spreaders tend to be more helpful than drop spreaders. The larger pieces of biochar may be 4mm in size. Be aware of any limitations with the particular spreader you use. Otherwise, a peat moss spreader is another good option. Biochar does tend to bridge up when going through a spreader, and occasional shaking of the hopper may be necessary.

A:  The Biochar Soil Amendment does have a decent moisture content, so you won't have to worry about it absorbing moisture from the soil. It does not have additional organic content added. If you have the option of blending the biochar with other organic material (compost, worm castings, organic fertilizer) prior to adding it to your soil, it is helpful. Inoculating biochar with beneficial microorganisms, such as mycorrhizal fungi or beneficial bacteria, before applying it to the garden can also enhance nutrient uptake and overall soil health. We recommend mixing it thoroughly or layering it in the planting area.

A:  Wakefield's Premium Biochar Soil Conditioner has a particle size range that is generally between 1mm-3mm.
