A: Yes 2x12x (x) is great for making shelves. Tomorrow in fact I will be purchasing 2x12x12 and having them cut it up into 5 25in shelves with some left over.

A: The wood itself is actually 1.5" thick so it's pretty sturdy. What will determine how much weight it can hold is what's actually holding up the shelves and whether they're screwed into solid studs.

The specifications list the moisture content as "Green".

A: If you have a chop saw or a hand held circular saw you can do it. I don't know if home depot will do it for you
