Q:Can these be used on green pressure treated lumber? Most pressure treatment utilizes copper, so, are there corrosion considerations to be concerned about, especially if the caps are made of copper plated aluminum?
by|Aug 9, 2023

Answer This Question

A:  ConfusedindaUP, these post caps are copper plated stainless steel. Our copper post caps come with a thin, clear marine lacquer designed to protect them before and during installation. However, once exposed to the elements, the coating breaks down, exposing the metal underneath. In general, copper progresses from a natural salmon color to a series of russet browns and grays, and finally to a blue green or gray-green patina. To maintain the shiny look, apply a car wax immediately after purchasing the cap, and reapply every 3 to 6 months.

A:  Hello Bug, From what we have seen, there are various products on the market that claim to keep birds from perching on posts, but they are very pointy, some highly reflective (mirrors even), and oftentimes have something else whirling around them. If that is what keeps a bird away, it is unlikely that this more mundane style of cap will do the trick. Sorry to say, but it's just a nice cap that finishes-off the look of the fence or deck post.

Q:I needed new 4x4 posts for my deck, so I got a cedar tone 12' 4x4 and a 54" 4x4 cedar tone deck post with the intention of getting these caps. Of course, a 54" 4x4 isn't the same size "4x4" as the 12' 4x4 (which, by the way isn't actually a 4x4 either, but I knew that). I see the dimensions of these caps is listed as 4" x 4". Is this really true? How many different sizes of 4x4s are there? Is there any store that sells lumber based on the metric system? Okay, I jest, but really... what size are these caps, truly, 3-1/4" x 3-1/4" or 3-1/2" x 3-1/2"?

A:  Hi Erich, The post cap fits nominal 4 in. x 4 in. wood post, but actual post dimensions are 3-1/2 in. x 3-1/2 in...or more specifically, 3-5/8 in. x 3-5/8 in. The amount of space within the copper post point is 1/4 inch before the angles begin. On a standard 4 in. x 4 in. wood post, you would need to leave ½ to 1 full inch of post space above the rail for the copper post point to fit – depending on preferred look and style.

A:  My posts came from Brazil and they are 3-7/16" x 3-7/16." These caps fit perfectly onto those posts. They are just under 3-3/4" inside opening. Since the sides of the caps are not exactly vertical, the extra 5/16" is great because it allows the cap to slip over the perfectly vertical faces of the post with just enough wiggle room so that you don't have to force them onto the post. BTW, the wind never blows these caps off, so there is no need for adhesive. Also, to ensure the shiny copper color remains, I sprayed 2 coats of clear Varathane on them. After 2 years, they still look brand new. 4x4 posts are supposed to be 3-1/2" x 3-1/2" per industry standards, but as you can see, not all 4x4 posts are milled exactly the same. Mine are hardwood and they were finish-sanded to result in a very smooth surface.

A:  They're designed to fit wider than the actual lumber post. Not by much but about 1/8"+ over-hang. They fit well if you can center them. My fence had a snug fit on the backside in a few places where I had to sit them flush in the back so a bit more overhang in the front. But matches my cedar fence with natural cedar stain pretty well

A:  The metal is pure copper. Copper ages pretty quickly depending on the environment. I prefer the polished copper look so I sprayed my caps with 2 coats of clear Varathane and after 2 years, they still look brand new. Previous caps were left to oxidize and they turned green in no time at all.
