Q:I have a steep . Not sure they will even work. I slipped the guard under the second course because the roof was too steep to get it under the first course. Is this a problem?

Answer This Question
A: If the gutter cover is wide enough it will fit under the 2nd course and work fine. Only you can judge that. To make it even more secure you can put a couple sheet metal screws in the front of each section, through the cover into the gutter rim. Don't forget to block off the ends because birds like to go in there and make a nest. When installing, I simply use snips/heavy scissors to cut and bend the end section of gutter cover to block that open space. The covers are very flexible; you can easily bend the end piece at a right angle without breaking them. I've had my covers on for at least 20 years, they work great! I chuckle when I see ads for gutter covers that are so expensive you need to take out a 2nd mortgage to afford them.

A: There are products advertised for painting porcelain but I trust NONE of them! If you need a color other than white I'd suggest you spend a few more bucks and get a toilet of your color choice.

Q:What exactly 'adjusts' on these guards? If my gutter is 4" do I just push more under the shingle or is there some way to make these narrower?

Answer This Question
A: Yes, just push more under the shingles. It’s a good idea to overlap about 1-1.5” for strength at the joints. This requires notching the front edge at the overlap points. A little more work but well worth the effort.

A: My gutters are 4 inch; because of the nailing on my shingles I had to cut some pieces of this gutter cover to allow it to slide under the lowest shingles. I simply used scissors. I did have to screw the front edge of the gutter covers to the gutter to prevent them from being blown out by strong winds. Two gutter screws on each gutter cover was sufficient. Corner/end pieces were susceptible to wind even though glued to the roof with roofing cement. I have had these gutter covers in place for several years now, need to clean my gutters much less often that with large mesh covers.

A: Kate - the flat part of the gutter guard slides up under the shingle and the side, with the cut outs will clip over the gutter itself. When you clip the edge over the gutter it will be secure enough but some people use a self tapping screw to secure it in place. You can just but the next piece to the installed piece.

A: These would just slide under shingle further. You could also cut the bak leg that goes under shingle down some.

A: Yes you can slide it under the shingle, but I've found that the slots that allow the water to flow into the gutter clog easily and the water just runs off but I have a lot of trees. I actually took most of mine out. The screen type that they sale works much better but they are more expensive.

A: No cutting necessary if the first course of of shingles was nailed correctly.........not too close to the forward edge. However, if cutting is necessary it can easily be done with aviation snips or even heavy scissors.
