Q:Width of the gutter guard's snap-on channel that engages the gutter lip. I have older 3' Amerimax solid white-gutter covers that have a wider snap-on width that was used on my 6" gutter approx a decade ago. I was surprised my house has both 5" and 6" gutters. The solid Amerimax purchased in HDepot April 2020 has a small snap-on width that currently can only fit on my 5" gutter lips that are small width. Will not snap onto my wider 6" gutter lips; my 6" gutter has a lip width about twice the size of the Amerimax snap-on channel. So does Amerimax have solid white covers with a wider snap-on width? A:  These guards are designed to fit standard gutter 4,5, and 6". I have not heard of any issues with it not fitting our 6" gutter. Here is a link to the installation procedures. It is available in the product overview under installation instructions. https://images.homedepot-static.com/catalog/pdfImages/ae/ae09df7a-54eb-4988-a730-53dca940d6e3.pdf

A:  Amerimax's written reply did not answer my question. I had already read and used the the installation instructions that are in the pdf they mention prior to submitting my question; like creating an endcap by folding a 2" section, and overlapping by min 1.5". That worked well for the 5" gutters. And the birds will have to find other nesting sites. For my 5" gutters, I have completed 48 ft of these solid white covers; great ! But as for the 6" gutter lips that are fatter, this snap on cover is not working; will not snap on because the cover snap-on width channel will not open far enough to snap on. And I am using a prying tool with maximum hand pressure. I have no choice but to seek out other brand cover products for my 6" gutters. Yes, the dimensions of these Amerimax covers do cover 6" gutters, but just do not snap on; and I am guessing there was a design change within the last decade that made the snap on channel width smaller.

A:  OK, I have an answer for 6" gutter lip widths. On 4/27/2020 I visited HDepot and checked the gutter lip widths for the 5" and 6" gutters HDepot currently sells, and they are the same small gutter lips for both the 5" and 6". But not so for my 5" and 6" gutters fabricated in 1998. My 5" gutter lip is small width, and my 6" gutter lip is noticeably larger. However I did purchase snap on gutter covers over a decade ago whose snap on channel is wider than these 3' Amerimax solid white; check the photo (cover edge view showing the snap on channel size) comparing the snap on widths. It is the old 6" gutter covers with wide snap on channel I am replacing. I had to re-install/snap on the old solid covers back on a 24 ft 6" gutter while I find a suitable replacement.

        Q:What is the width?

        Answer This Question

A:  Off hand I don't know the width but it is wide enough to snap onto the front edge of a conventional gutter and tuck in under the first course of roof shingles. Probably not wide enough to cover a larger, commercial building gutter; the type found on multi-unit condos and apartment buildings.

Q:do they get clogged with the hairy leaf strings from oak trees

A:  Small material is what gets into my gutters despite these gutter covers. My issues is with pine needles and white birch seeds. Together a few needles and the small stick seeds collect inside the gutters at the downspouts so I need to clean my gutters twice a year. These gutters are the third type that I have tried and work the best. I have had these in place now for several years, cut to fit under shingle nailing, front edge attached to my gutters with gutter screws so that they do not blow off in high winds.

A:  no, it doesn't clog up with hairy leaf strings from oak trees, but depends on the location and how much trees are around.

A:  I have oak trees and have not had a problem. Just like GUTTER GUARD, they should be cleared of ANY debris about every two (2) years. This can be accomplished without climbing a ladder ie., standing on the ground with a GutterMaster flusher which includes a high pressure nozzle. It extends to 12 feet creating a height range of 20 feet..

Q:Will these work on a steeper pitch roof like 12/12? Or will the water be running down the roof too fast and fall off the end of the gutter cover?

          Answer This Question

A:  Yes, during a very heavy downpour the water will run right off the gutter guard and directly down on the ground regardless of your roof pitch. However, that's the exception rather than the rule. For most rains we've experienced, the rain water follows the gutter guard right around and into the gutter. I wouldn't do without these things.

          by|Nov 12, 2019

A:  This will work and the design uses surface adhesion for water to roll into gutter. There could be some runoff depending on the amount of rainfall per hour.

A:  They work poorly. Test a couple installed with a garden hose.

Q:Are end caps available to seal the ends? Birds get in and build nests.

A:  Ahhh, good point, the birds love going in there! No, end caps are not available. I simply cut and trimmed the end pieces, bent them and tucked them down in the gutter to form end caps. I don't remember what I used to cut but as I recall it cut very easily. I used scissors or aviation snips. The plastic is very flexible and won't break when you bend it, even beyond 90 degrees.

Q:My gutter layout has two 'inside' corners. How do you cover that approximately 6 inch by 6 inch square of an inside corner? Are instructions included or is there a special extra related part to buy?

A:  This product can be cut to fit most applications.

              by|Sep 3, 2019

A:  You have to use a little ingenuity. The covers are easily cut with scissors so you can experiment and cut the pieces on an angle to fit the corner. I'd suggest you overlap a bit. Also, if there is space at the end of the gutter for birds to enter and make a nest, I'd suggest you do the same.......using scissors, cut the end piece and bend it down and tuck it down into the end of the gutter to cover that opening.

A:  They worked fine on mine and they weren't Amerimax gutters. I think they will work on any k style gutter but to be sure buy just one section and try it for fit. I'm very happy with mine they've been on the house for over 10 years and doing great!

Q:Are the slots small enough to keep out wasps, hornets, etc? (Products like this tend to favor them making nests in gutters if the slots are large enough for them to enter the cover.)

                      Answer This Question

A:  No, wasps and hornets can easily enter although I've never seen it happen that they set up house in there. The first rain would wash away their happy home. I have seen birds enter and build nests. Birds enter from the ends. So you must make provisions to guard against that. Cut and bend the end pieces so they extend downward to block the entrance. The end pieces can be cut with scissors and easily bent down by hand and tucked in the gutter itself.

A:  Yes, in a heavy rain some/most water will run right off like a waterfall regardless of roof pitch. However, rain that heavy does not seem to be the norm around here (PA), it's only occasionally which I can tolerate.
