Q:Can this be used to cover a counter top? To rest hot pots on?
by|Apr 4, 2023
1 Answer
Answer This Question

A:  George - yes - you can cover a counter top to rest hot pans. However, the performance of the cork covering over a period of time will depend on how "hot" the pans are when being set on the cork. The cork liner is about 1/16" thick and not as thick as a cork "hot pad". The cork liner is designed to replicate a cork surface covering and not necessarily be a "hot pad". If you have a formica counter top under the cork, that could be an issue because the formica would be sensitive to the heat. If you have a wood, metal, or stone type countertop, there should be no issue. The best thing to do is to test an area of the counter top first to see how it works. A:  I want to use this for the same purpose but had to contact Live Chat to inquire about the thickness since it is not in the specifications. From what I was told, the material is 1/16" thick, and to use for this purpose would require as least two layers.

A:  It is a little too thin to hold tacks.

A:  The material is not very thick, so if you use push pins, they would go through to your wall.

Q:Could I cut this to use as a cork backing for tile coasters I am making? Would it hold up to getting damp?

A:  I've used it on coasters and it seems to adhere well after using a brayer to make sure it sticks well. Have not used them but believe the cork will serve it's purpose.

A:  YES - you can cut it for use on coasters. As far as getting damp and how it would hold up, if the dampness is constant, it could have an effect on the long range performance. A lot depends on how smooth the bottom of the coaster is when applying the cork.

A:  Damp is fine, we have had no lifting. After a few years you may want to replace, drying out and chipping but that is with constant use. We use the cork on the bottom of our planters on the wooden tables.

                          Answer This Question

A:  You can cut cork liner with either scissors or an exacto knife. If you use an exacto knife, it is recommended you use a straight edge to guide your cut. For covering a serving tray, self-adhesive cork would work fine.

A:  It would look very nice on a tray. The cork does absorb moisture and the after color. It does not roll up, the adhesive back is great. Condition the cork once in a while to prevent drying out. As for cutting, we have used scissors and a box cutter. If you have a steady hand, box cutter/exacto is great for straight lines.

A:  Hi Beth, to an extent. Over time it can crack. We have used on a vase, tin cans and it worked great but a sharper angle bend may crack over time. We run it to the edge, just the beginning of the rounding of shelves. It holds up well with a wipe down.

A:  It does bend, but you'll see breakage in the cork if you wrap it 90 degrees. It probably won't give you a smooth wrap at that angle.

A:  Possibly. I take it is a simple gasket washer made of cork. If it's originally stick on, then yes. If not, still possible but the preferred is the type without a sticky back to it. Check thickness of the original and compare. This cork sheeting is 1/16th inch thick.
