Q:I know that you can apply top coat within 2-4 hours, can you wait a week or two before applying the topcoat?

Answer This Question

A:  Yes, it doesn't hurt to wait longer, but don't apply the second coat too soon.

by|Jul 13, 2020

A:  Yes... I was in the painting business in Illinois many years ago and sometimes it was necessary to have extended periods of time between primers and topcoats. The length of time is not usually relevant unless it is a year or two.

Q:Can you tint this
by|Apr 3, 2020

Answer This Question

A:  No, this primer cannot be tinted.

by|Apr 3, 2020

A:  yes. I usually tint my primer one shade lighter than the color coat, so I can use 2 coats of primer, then one coat of color. This is cheaper that one coat of primer and 2 coats of color, and it looks the same. I tint one shade lighter so I can see where I have already painted when I am applying the color coat.

A:  Use this primer it will give a nice base especially going over a dark paint. Jus a suggestion f you two coats of primer for hiding

    by|Mar 30, 2020

A:  Yes, but you usually don't need to prime a wall that has already been painted unless you have done a lot of patching. If you patch or touch up, you should apply a coat of primer over the patched areas and feather it out over the old color so that the patches will not flash thru and stand out when you apply the color paint. If you did a lot of patching, its probably easier to just use a roller and prime the whole wall.

Q:Can I use this on preprinted walls? I repaired large Sheetrock and used compound to patch large holes. I need a wallboard sealer and a primer for the old walls. Will this work?

    Answer This Question

A:  yes, we used it on painted walls that have a pattern. This gives the paint a good base to cover up the old paint.

    by|May 13, 2020

    A:  Yes absolutely

    by|Apr 21, 2021

A:  I assume you mean pre-painted walls. This works great as a primer for a base coat to finish repaired or virgin drywall.

Q:I have used this product as a top coat on a ceiling in the past and it was great!!! How long will it last?
        by|Mar 10, 2020

        Answer This Question

A:  I have no idea, but it should last as long as paint. I have been using the Glidden Ceiling paint because it is extra flat, and the colors exactly match the chart. When you tint primer, the color match may not be exact. Even if you use it in its natural while color, the color paint has many different subtle shades of white, and the primer is just a single shade, and not guaranteed to be the same shade from can to can. After all, its not meant to be seen as the top coat, so exact color control is not needed.

A:  I sprayed PVA drywall primer on all the dry wall of my new house after the tornado of 2017 destroyed the old house. So far, it has been excellent.

Q:will this product fill small imperfections in a skim coat on ceilings?
          by|Jan 1, 2020

          Answer This Question

A:  Not anymore or any less than any other paint

          by|Jan 3, 2020

A:  I wouldn't expect any paint product to fill small imperfections. Mix up some thin mud and skim coat the bad areas before you prime. After you prime, use a drop light and edge light the entire area looking for minor imperfections. Fix them before you apply the second coat of primer, and always sand the entire surface lightly between every coat of primer or paint.

            by|Jul 13, 2020

A:  No, this is a primer and not a filler. Mike

A:  this is a water based primer. It is not a good one though so if you use make sure to put it on with a deep nap roller or brush so it will cover and seal in one coat.

                by|Feb 17, 2021

A:  Yes, it cleans up spills and brushes easily with water.

A:  If you buy the 5 gallon bucket, the Home Depot associates can add a tint to it.

A:  I would say yes, but the pros at Home Depot might have other recommendations that depend on your application. This primer is intended to put on bare drywall. Of course if you intend to paint over the primer in a dark color it seems logical that tinting the primer to make it closer to the finish color would be a wise choice. I just don't know the chemistry here. It may be that another primer would work better with the dyes used to color it.

                  Answer This Question

A:  Yes, 1 coat of primer then 1 or more coats of paint. Number of coats depends on paint and color. Good luck!!

                  by|Oct 16, 2019

A:  Yes, you absolutely can. Although I don't use a satin finish, the PVA primer basically just seals the bare drywall and tape joints, allowing any final top coat to have a consistent (color) appearance and sheen. Hope that helps.

Q:How many square feet will 5 gallons cover?

                        Answer This Question

A:  Since it's used to prime newly installed drywall, 5 gals won't go as far as a latex top coat over an existing primed surface. Figure 1200-1500 sq. ft. max. Also depends on if you are spraying it or rolling it on. Glidden states "covers 45 sheets of drywall". Hope that helps.

                        by|Sep 14, 2019

A:  Most latex paint will cover about 300 Square feet per gallon... so a five gallon container likely would cover about 1500 square feet.
