A:  I doubt it. I have the little gray box it's takes 220 into the box 220 out to the heater. However someone may know better so don't take my word for it. Richard

A:  Yes, but you can buy a single pole (110 V version) which is less expensive. Be sure the current rating is sufficient for your appliance.

          A:  Yes.

Q:Will it work with a neutral wire? I wired it 240V with two hot wires and a ground, but when I turned the switch to off, the clock turned off. So it was fundamentally a 240V switch. But I'm wondering if the clock needs a neutral wire to work when off

A:  Yes. The clock needs a neutral wire for it to work when the power output is turned off.

A:  Check with an electrician, also read the instruction in the installation that came with the water heater timer switch.

              by|May 5, 2023

A:  You have two 120 V phases of power in your house. The circuit breakers in a residential panel alternate phases, which are a half cycle out of sync with each other. A 240 V breaker takes up two slots in the panel, taking a hot from each phase. Since the two phases oppose each other the resulting emf [electromotive force] is 240 V. 240 V circuits do not use a neutral wire. They do use a ground wire, to insure that the case of the device is at ground potential, protecting from exposure to high voltage (any voltage over 50 V is considered high voltage). However, the clock motor in this device runs on 120 V, single phase. So, the neutral line is needed for the clock to run. Do not connect the ground wire (usually green, or bare copper) to where the neutral is supposed to go. That would create a ground fault. Follow the wiring diagram in the instructions. If you do not understand this stuff, you would be well served to consult with a licensed electrician.

A:  There is no need for a neutral w/ this timer - the motor running the clock is a 240VAC device. Sounds like you have the source and load connections backwards. Source (from break panel) is supposed to be connected to screws 1 & 3 - Load is on 2 & 4. See wiring diagram here: https://www.intermatic.com/-/media/inriver/7293-8775.ashx/WH40-Specifications-EN

Q:Do we really save on our electric bill ? I just installed this timer 5 days ago and I do a daily read of KW used and before installing I averaged 14.6KW a day, after installing timer I average 11.3KW a day, that's a savings of 99KW for 30 day electric bill, I have it timed for 1 hour in the morning and 1 hour at night, new 30 gal electric hot water heater.

                    Answer This Question

A:  It does save and we also have the electric company auto-disconnect. I have the timer set to be on only 2-3 hours in AM and 2-3 hours in PM. Don't have current figures to quote, but checked it after first installing 25 years ago and it cut heater usage drastically then.

                      Answer This Question

A:  It's hard to say, I've always setup and used the water heater timer from the start. If I don't use the water heater timer, my electric bill will be high. It's worth it, to install the water heater timer, if you want to save money. Turning on the water heater, when you need the hot water, then turning it off. That's what I do to keep my electricity bill cost low. If you want to know the difference, check your electricity bill without the water heater timer. Then install the water heater timer to see the difference.

A:  It's designed to utilities only one 240 amps only, it's very dangerous to use it for 2 ea - 240 amps, it has a change of causing an electrical short, which will cause an explodes. Then will cause an electrical fire and burn down anything near the water heater time switch.

Q:My water heater is 50' from sink. Have to run water 2 min before hotwater gets to sink. When i had another house with gas water heater I used circulator pump so I got hot water to the sink quickly. With electric water heater would add to mich to electric bill. To solve this problem I installed a 2 gallon water heater at the sink connected in line with the hot water supply so that I have hot water instantly and at the same time if I used enough hot water the under sink heater gets fed hot water from main heater. So I'm thinking if I had a timer turn off the main water heater during the day and just use the little water heater under the sink that I wouldn't be bringing on the main water heater and that should save money and then let the main water heater turn on at 5 PM till midnight for dishwasher use and showers and wash. Your thoughts please

A:  NO ! I gave it a full month and watched my KW hours per day, I only saved 11 KW hours per month that works out about $1 Dollar a month. Also I had trouble with the timer not switching on where I had to reset the timer twice in 30 days. Not worth it, it will take more energy to heat up the water heater from cold than keeping it on all the time. I dropped from a 40 gallon to a 30 gallon electric water heater since I don't use much hot water and not home most of the time and was very disappointed my electric usage didn't drop as much as I expected. I wasted $60 for this timer to find out it was a waste of money and time so learn from my mistakes

A:  Yes it does , kind of.. these timers are what I believe being made over seas and the quality is crap.. Better to just install a switch and control the WH manually ... want to save - build a radiant / solar heater and cut the electric cost by 90%

A:  For us, it is not an issue of saving money. We are off-grid, and we only want the water heater to run during peak solar output at mid afternoon. This lets us control when the water heater turns on, if needed.
