Q:20 amp leviton gfci installed and protecting two othe outlets tests wired correctly but green led is not lit

Answer This Question

A:  If the device will TEST/RESET properly, the LED should stay lit when power is at the receptacle. It may be harder to see if it is in a bright area, but if you can't see it, call Leviton Tech support at 800.824.3005.

A:  Once I wired my GFCI and flipped the breaker I thought the light did not come on, but my wife said it did. Turned out the lights in the bath and sure enough the LED was on, Mine just wasn't a real bright LED. I know of no other reason for the LED not to come on unless it is faulty, if all else tests correctly, you know the old ones didn't have an LED. If you are still worried take it back for a replacement.

A:  You should have no more than one other outlet after your gfci and should be on the same wall per national code. And if they are double boxes, then have a gfci and breakered wire at every box. But you may just have a faulty gfci outlet.

A:  Please recheck your wiring. Are you getting power to the other outlets?

A:  If the green light does not laminate it is a damaged or defective outlet

Q:My GFCI switch as 6 wires Plus the ground wire

        Answer This Question

A:  You must go by color code or markings on the unit. Red/Black is positive and white/green or bare is always negative. In reality both white/green or bare all go back to your negative or ground bar as you can observe looking inside of your power box. The green/bare wire on all outlets is really a backup to the white negative.

A:  I think you mean "My GFCI switch [h]as 6 wires Plus the ground wire." This would mean that the original wires are one hot+neutral pair of Line [source] plus ground wire, and two pairs of Load [feeding power from the GCFI module] when everything is powered up. Two Line wires + Four Load wires + One Ground wire Equals the seven wires you describe. This can be verified using the written instructions included with the Leviton GFCI module. Of the Load pairs, the hot wires can be twisted together to a single wire for easier insertion into the corresponding hot terminal of the GFCI module. Likewise, the neutral wires can be twisted together to a single wire for easier insertion into the corresponding neutral terminal of the GFCI. Mechanically tie the pigtailed connections together with wire nuts and you are in business with the replacement GFCI module

A:  Please resubmit the question with a make and model number and if possible a picture of the item. Not sure what you mean by a GFCI "switch".

Q:After reset, outlet tester shows it's live and not mis-wired (double checked with non-contact tester and black is hot as expected). Yet no green LED. I can run a lamp off this outlet and it doesn't trip. Pressing the reset button gives a brief flash of red LED and then outlet is off. Have ground and line connected. No load. Replaced outlet with another identical GFCI and behaves the same. Seems to work perfectly except no green LED. Does LED light only during fault?

A:  No, LED light normally is green when power is detected & no fault is detected. These are shipped in a fault position & reset only after installed & power is turned back on @ panel box. Have you called their customer service? Sorry to say this but, you may have something going on that you aren't aware of & might require an electrician to check the circuit out more fully.

A:  Red is generally a fault indication with some brands. However, some brands use the red light as indication of a normal operational circuit. Search the manufacturer's product literature for full details.

A:  After talking to the manufacturer's tech support, it seems green light should be on all the time and this product was faulty. Returned to home depot who are always great about that. No idea how I got two devices that were both defective. Replaced with 15A Leviton GFCI and it works perfectly. Curious if anyone else has bought a device that worked perfectly except for the green LED.

A:  The LED status indicator light is green all the time if everything is functioning correctly. When tripped, there is no light at all. When resetting, there is a quick flash of red then constant green again. If the light continually stays red, or blinks red, it means there is something wrong. Make sure incoming wires are connected to the line and not the load terminals. Double check to make sure your incoming ground wire is indeed grounded. If this is good and you say your outlet tester still indicates that all appears okay, you may have to call Leviton.

A:  GFCI receptacles cannot be split wired. I would suggest you install a dead front GFCI device in a 1900 box along with a split wired 15 amp duplex receptacle under the sink. Protect the wiring with the dead front device before feeding the switch and split wired duplex receptacle.

A:  Hello AJ, I’m Chris from the Home Depot’s how-to Community. Thank you for your question. Unfortunately, GFCI outlets do not allow for splitting the two plug-ins. I hope this helps, Chris. .

A:  If you follow the instructions with the outlet you will see that additional outlets can be added on 'downline'. These downline outlets can be outlets or a direct wired unit (with or without a switch). I would check with a local electrician once you have settled on a wiring plan to ensure safety.
