Q:I live in south Fl zone10. I purchased a couple of the Miss Molly butterfly plants but I’m limited on space. These can grow quite large, if need be can I cut them back? When is the best time and how in Florida? thanks

Answer This Question

A:  Hi Garden Friend Thanks for asking! Miss Molly is hardy in zones 5-9 and can reach 4-5 feet tall and wide at maturity. Prune in spring, after the new growth emerges. The warmer your climate, the more you should cut back your butterfly bush each spring. Left unpruned, large butterfly bushes can become “second story” plants: their flowers form way up at the top so you can’t enjoy them unless you have a second-story window. Answer This Question

A:  Hi Eika, Thanks for your inquiry! The Miss Molly butterfly shrub will grow and thrive within hardiness zones 5-9, which includes most areas of CA. To determine your hardiness zone and if this will grow in your location, you may input your zip code on the USDA website linked here: https://planthardiness.ars.usda.gov/ Miss Molly Buddleia has fragrant flowers that are a rich deep pink color. This compact plant is smaller than many other buddleia varieties and its distinctive flower color makes late summer gardens pop. Its fragrant flowers attract butterflies and hummingbirds but resist deer. This shrub will reach 4-5 feet tall and wide at maturity and requires full sun (at least 8 hours a day). Q:In zone two will it survive in a 5 gallon pot in a patio setting?
          by|Oct 22, 2023
          1 Answer
          Answer This Question

A:  Bobby, Thanks for your inquiry, I am happy to help! The Miss Molly butterfly bush will survive the winter temperatures and thrive within hardiness zones 5-9. This being said, unfortunately, this shrub would not survive in your area in Zone 2. If this shrub was planted outside the parameters of the corresponding hardiness zones, our one-year shrub guarantee would not apply. The shrub will not be valid for replacement if it does not survive once planted within your location. Please feel free to reach out with any further questions via phone at 734-654-7485 or email us at helpdesk@provenwinnersdirect.com. Best Regards-Sarah

Q:How do I make sure this stay alive in winter??

            Answer This Question

A:  Hello TkMc- Great question! During the winter months here in southeast Michigan, we keep our shrubs in cooler greenhouses where they go dormant. When the weather conditions begin to transition and get warmer, your dormant plants will wake up and return to business as usual! If you live in a warmer climate (above freezing), all you have to do is plant the shrub, then feed and water it. Within a few weeks signs of life will return as your plant adjusts to the warm climate. If you live in a cooler climate, keep the plant out of the elements by storing it inside your garage or home. Also, keep its soil moist until outside temperatures rise and your area is frost-free. Your average frost-free date can be found here farmersalmanac.com/average-frost-dates or by calling your local garden center. Then, plant it, feed it, and water it and you’ll be good to grow! Q:Can this flourish in a large pot?

              Answer This Question

A:  Hi KayB - Great question! Growing Miss Molly butterfly bush in a pot is very possible if you can provide this vigorous shrub with a very large pot. Keep in mind that Miss Molly can grow 4-5 feet tall and wide at maturity so it may need to be moved in the future. This compact plant is smaller than many other buddleia varieties and its distinctive flower color makes late summer gardens pop. Its fragrant flowers attract butterflies and hummingbirds but resist deer. Butterfly bushes need perfect drainage. Their roots are sensitive to rotting, and if they spend any amount of time in wet soil, they can be set back or even die. They can grow in clay soil, but need to be planted a few inches above soil level. This creates a small “hill” that encourages water to drain away from the plant rather than settle around it. Never amend the soil when planting a butterfly bush. Amending the soil, particularly clay soil, can cause drainage problems. Avoid mulching directly around your butterfly bush. Mulch is a great idea for other plants, but in clay soil, it can hold too much moisture. Go ahead and mulch your beds, but give your butterfly bush a bit of clearance, and never mulch all the way up to the main stems. Answer This Question

A:  Hi Carolyn ~ Thank you for asking! With its intensely colored blooms and refined habit, 'Miss Molly' is the queen of the summer garden. Its fragrant flowers are the closest to red of any butterfly bush and appear for months every summer without deadheading. Unlike older varieties of butterfly bush, 'Miss Molly' reaches just 4-5 feet tall, so it's easy to work into any sunny landscape. This non-invasive variety thrives in hot climates. Butterflies and hummingbirds will find it as irresistible as you do! As always, please feel free to reach out to us at any time with any questions or concerns.
