is it organic and safe for butterflies?

Asked by Tired July 25, 2020

Answer

Hello, Thank you for reaching out to us. We mainly use bio controls to combat against pests on our plants. We do use pesticides occasionally to ensure you receive a healthy plant with not bad bugs on it. The pesticides we do use are Neonicotinoid free and will not cause harm to any pollinators or humans that touch it. We time the usage of pesticides to ensure that it is not in your plants system at the point of ship. We only use pesticides that have less than a 24-hour active period. All chemicals dissipate long before it is put in a box and shipped to you. I hope this helps! If you have any additional questions, please feel free to reach out to us at 734-654-7485 or helpdesk@provenwinnersdirect.com. Best Regards, Tabatha

What is the best time of year to plant these?

I planted mine in spring. It was tiny and grew to 3 feet tall by fall. It had many blooms - it was the highlight of my garden. It died back to the ground over winter (it does that in colder climates) and then it reappeared later in spring.

Yes, butterfly bushes love sun. In fact they will only bloom in sun - the more sun the better.

Will the flowers come back every year

This bush is fantastic. No need to cut it down, especially in the fall. Cutting stimulates the plant to grow and recover from the injury, this is NOT the time for grooming. If you want to shape it, do it in the spring or summer. I purchase two of these from the store and they are fine. You know after you plant it you have to make sure to water it once a week for at least three weeks while the roots get settled in AND then additional water if you have not received a measurable amount of rainfall.

Can it thrive on Zone 8A which is my area?

Yes, it's rated for hardiness zones 5a through 9b.

Can it withstand cold temperature?

Answers

This butterfly bush is hardy to zone 5. In colder climates, such as zone 5 it will die back to the ground over the winter and reappear the following spring. Each spring (end of April) I cut mine down to 12 inches and it regrows. I was advised to do that by the garden center - it stimulates a flush of new growth as it blooms on new wood.

Have these been treated or genetically altered with neonicortinoids or in any other way?

No, these plants have not been altered this way.

Even though the plant was small when received, it was very healthy looking. Now, only two weeks after planting it has already got three or more wine colored blooms . A very good surprise! I am looking forward to years of pleasure watching beautiful butterflies find a resting spot on this bush. Thank you!

(What's this)
REQUESTED 3 DIFFERENT PLANTS AND RECEIVED 2 BOXES, ONE BOX HAD 2 PLANTS AND NO LABELS TO IDENTIFY TO WHICH PLANT THEY WERE, THERE WAS NO FLOWERING, JUST LEAVES, SO I WASN’T SURE. THE 2 ND BOX HAD ONE PLANT THAT WAS FLOWERING , SO IT WAS EASY TO SEE WHAT PLANT THAT WAS, ALSO IN THIS BOX WAS 2 LABELS THAT WERE FOR THE FIRST BOX. THESE LABELS WERE HELPFUL TO POINT OUT WHAT TYPE OF LEAVES EACH PLANT WOULD HAVE. HOPEFULLY I GOT IT RIGHT, BUT I WILL KNOW DOWN THE ROAD AS THEY BLOOM IF I DID GET IT RIGHT. THIS PLANT LOOKED BAD AT FIRST WHEN PLANTED BUT IT STARTED TO SPROUT NEW BUDS IN ABOUT A WEEK. I AM SURE IT’S GOING TO BE OKAY. LOOKING BETTER

Response from Proven WinnersJune 15, 2016
Hi ozzie,
I'm sorry to hear your plants were not properly labeled. They probably looked a little rough from the shipping process, but they should be thriving now that you have planted them! Sounds like they are in good hands with you and off to a good start!

If you have any questions about your plants, give us a call at (734) 654-7485.
Thanks,
Hailee

(What's this)
I am continually impressed with the shipping of these plants. This one came small - probably only 5" across, by 10" tall - but arrived healthy and is rapidly growing. It is young, so with proper care and conditions, it will be a larger bush when it is an adult. Perfect for a patio pot or porch. It requires full sun, so do not put it in the shade and expect it to live.

It looks like it's dying. It hasn't flowered and notably attracted butterflies, since it was delivered and planted. I guess it's more high-maintenance than I had expected.
