Q:I live in south Fl zone10. I purchased a couple of the Miss Molly butterfly plants but I’m limited on space. These can grow quite large, if need be can I cut them back? When is the best time and how in Florida? thanks

Answer This Question

A:  Hi Garden Friend Thanks for asking! Miss Molly is hardy in zones 5-9 and can reach 4-5 feet tall and wide at maturity. Prune in spring, after the new growth emerges. The warmer your climate, the more you should cut back your butterfly bush each spring. Left unpruned, large butterfly bushes can become “second story” plants: their flowers form way up at the top so you can’t enjoy them unless you have a second-story window. When it arrived it was not as good as I hoped, very small and looked like it was not going to make it. I kept thinking I would have to toss it but I gave it a little time and now it’s gorgeous, I love it. Little red flowers and every time I go out there there are two to three butterflies on it. I ordered 2 more.

Received Miss Molly Butterfly bush earlier than what was stated. It came well ventilated, alive and just as it was described.

              Not a winner for me
I ordered a pant online picked up from store and planted it right away. It wasn't doing so well but I wanted blooms before I received my shipment of butterflies. I went to the store and purchased 2 more plants, was told maybe I watered the first plant too much. As instructed, I placed the new plants in full sunlight, watered them a little less and nothing. My plants did not grow, thrive or bloom. Maybe it's the zone, or soil but I am not happy at all with my purchase. What's HD return policy

                Healthy and Beautiful
I received these plants a few days ago. Upon opening, they are in perfect condition. They were green and perky. There wasn't one wilted leaf. The soil was drenched in water, which I'm assuming was to keep them hydrated for shipping. I have had many butterfly bushes in the past and they are very hardy plants. Once established, these are so easy to take care of. I haven't planted them yet because it's been raining here, but plan to within the next few days. Remember, these do best in full sun. You will get more blooms and growth. I am very happy with my purchase.
