Q:Good day. I am restoring a pot belly stove. There are 3 sections or seams that must be caulked so that smoke does not escape into the house. Can this high-heat paint be used to spray on top of high-temperature caulk, once the caulk has cured?

A: Happy to help, Thomas! Rust-Oleum Specialty High Heat Spray Paint is intended for use over metal surfaces that will reach higher temperatures, and we do not recommend it for use over caulk. Please keep in mind, if the caulk is silicone-based, it is not considered to be a paintable surface.

Q:1. Is this tougher/more durable than your 2x Painters Touch spray paint? 2. I see comments that this needs to be heated to cure, but I don’t see this mentioned in the instructions. Is this correct?

Answer This Question
A: We're happy to clear things up. Rust-Oleum Specialty High Heat Spray Paint provides a heat-resistant finish that is slightly more durable than our Rust-Oleum Painter's Touch 2X Ultra Cover Spray Paint. If the surface will exceed 500° F the paint will need to be heat cured by heating the surface to 450° F for 1 hour after the finish has dried. If the surface will not exceed 500° F the finish will fully cure after at least 24 hours.

Q:Can it be used on the cooking grates with no effect on the food while cooking on it?

Answer This Question
A: Thank you for reaching out, Joseph. While Rust-Oleum Specialty High Heat Spray Paint can withstand temperatures up to 1200° F, it can not be exposed to direct heat or flame. This will cause the paint to blister and peel. Please also note this is not a food safe product, and we do not recommend applying to surfaces that will come in contact with food.

Answer This Question
A: We're happy to help, Mark. Heating the surface to 450° F for longer than an hour after applying Rust-Oleum Specialty High Heat Spray Paint can help ensure the finish has fully cured. We do not recommend heating the surface significantly over 450° F as this can hinder the curing process and lead to a sticky finish. Please also note, this paint can not be exposed to direct flame, exposure to direct flame will cause the finish to blister and peel.

A: I also used on my word burning stove. 400 grit sandpaper prep and alcohol wipe prior to paint. After full winters use, still looks good. Any difference in color is just because I need to clean up some ash off the face of the stove.
