Q:I have deep shade and dogs running around. Grass dies by late summer. Bare dirt now. Would it be best to apply a hardy fall seed like this now and overseed in Feb./March with dense shade seed or just go with dense shade seed now?

Answer This Question

A:  If you area is dense shade that is then the Scotts Turf Builder Dense Shade Mix would be best for the area. It is too late at this time to apply seed. Recommended temperature for planting of grass seed is when the air temperature consistently 60-85 degrees with soil temperature consistently 55- 60 degrees.

A:  Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Fall Mix can be spread in a Scotts Rotary spreader at a setting of 131/2 for a new lawn and 61/2 for overseeding. If using a Scotts drop spreader use setting 121/2 for new seeding and 8 for overseeding.

Q:My lawn is slowly being overcome by bentgrass. I plan to plug aerate this fall. Will overseeding with your fall seed product help with my efforts to rid my yard of the bentgrass? Or do I run the risk of spreading the bentgrass even more with the plugs that get pulled during aeration? Thank yo.

                Answer This Question

A:  The Scotts Turf Builder Fall Mix Grass Seed and the Scotts Turf Builder Sun & Shade Mix Grass Seed are very similar. Both contain a mix of red fescue, perennial rye and Kentucky bluegrass and produce a medium to dark green lawn. When seeding we recommend that you use Scotts Turf Builder Starter Food for New Grass.

                  Answer This Question

A:  Frank, we recommend that you sow your seed and fertilizer on the same day. Sow the seed first and then apply the fertilizer. Make sure to use a fertilizer that is designed for new seedlings or if you already have your fertilizer, check the label to make sure it is safe for seeding.
