        A:  You could see anywhere from 3-7 staves of wood glued together to create the retread.

          A:  The steps consist of oak boards glued up to produce the proper width of the step, as is the case with most wide solid wood stairs.  The grain matches well, and the surfaces are flat.

              Q:The treads under my existing carpet are only 9.25" deep, while the underside of this retread is 10.5". How to deal with the 1.25" difference? Trim each retread to match the treads? Add a spacer to the front of each existing tread? Or something else?
