Q:Are these buckets heat-resistant? Chemical-resistant? I need to mix up a sulfur solution which heats up to near-boiling in the chemical reaction. If not, is there a heavier grade bucket available? Thank you so much for your help.

Answer This Question
A: Kate - our buckets are not really tested for this type of application. They are made from HDPE and can sustain short periods up to up to 230°F (110°C.) They are generally chemical-resistant but you should check the properties of the chemicals you are using. We don't supply a heavier bucket, but they do exist.

A: Dear Wondering: The #2 symbol does not necessarily mean the bucket is food-safe. Virgin, or non-recycled, HDPE is food-safe, but if that cannot be guaranteed, the bucket should not be labeled as such. Our products are more geared toward paint and DIY so we do not FDA certify. The buckets we label as food-safe are run on a segregated machine and use virgin HDPE. Currently, we only offer white as food-safe; they will be called out with a food-safe sticker. The orange buckets also have colorant that is not tested as food-safe which adds another level of uncertainty. The buckets could be lined with a Mylar lining to be used for planting. It is left to the consumer to decide to use with or without a liner. Hope that sheds some light on the labeling.

A: Hello Faye, No, we do not consider the orange Homer buckets food safe. Currently we have only a white food-safe bucket at Home Depot (search Item# 300197644). If a bucket is food safe, it will will be marked explicitly on a sticker with the label. Q:Is it safe to grow potatoes in the buckets being that they are plastic?

Answer This Question
A: Hello Steve, The orange pails are not considered food safe, so it is up to you whether you use them to plant. We have no data on the probability of the dye leaching, nor do we trace if any recycled material was used. People use them for planting a lot. If you do, you will want to drill some holes in the bottom for the water to drain.

Answer This Question
A: Hello Jueirnsj, the bucket is made of HDPE and can sustain liquids up to 230 degrees for a short period of time. Just be aware that if pouring in hot liquids, especially approaching the boiling point of 212 degrees, the walls of the container may become somewhat flexible and the bucket difficult to move. The bucket is tested at 120°F where the product and artwork showed no signs of degradation for a period of 24 hours.

A: Hi Jenny, Our lids are sold separately so you can choose the lid that best suits your needs. Our bucket are a standard size so any 5-gallon lid should fit. We have three types of lids: "Easy-off" pushes on and off much like the lids on a deli container. "Heavy Duty Lids with Gasket" provide a tighter seal and has a tear-tab to remove. "Screw-Top Lid" is a two part design. A ring sits permanently on the lip of the bucket and the middle section screws on and off. You should be able to find something that fits your needs on homedepot.com.

A: Actually a question: How long can I keep stain in this, with a lid, before stain quality ifs affected? I have a 4 day project coming up. Thanks
by|May 15, 2023
A: Hi Burner: The lid would have to sit properly and be put on tightly. Out screw-top lid (search item# 303808738) may provide a tighter fit. Again, it would have to be applied properly. We wouldn't guarantee the air-tightness of the orange lids; it depends on the application it is being used for and how tight it needs to be.
