We will correct that information. The product you referenced is in fact PVC. It can be used on a backsplash or behind the stove. We do not recommend trying to paint the PVC product.

Q:What should I use to cut this to size?

A:  One of the benefits of PVC trims is they are easy to cut. The best way to cut plastic profiles is with a fine-toothed rotary saw. This gives a neater cut than using a wide-toothed saw as it reduces burred and jagged edges. The more teeth on the saw the better the cut. PVC trims may also be cut using appropriate snips. If using in a corner, consider a miter box and saw.

Q:Can you paint this trim? The sheen on the pvc edge is flat and the tile is shiny. The contractor cheaped out and went with the pvc edge, which I would not have done. But, now that it?s installed, I need to fix it because I can?t rip it out.

A:  Since it’s PVC it can be painted, yes. I recommend using a little piece of sandpaper to rough it up a bit to hold paint better.

Q:Can this product be used as a support at the base of the backsplash behind the range? I have counters on both sides of range which would support both ends of the schluter and in turn it would prevent the tiles from sliding down where there is no counter behind the stove. I am wondering if it can support the weight of all the tiles in that area.

A:  You could install the tiles right over the counter top but you would need to put spacers so that you have a joint like the rest of the tiles grout joints. I usually prefer to use the tile edging right over the counter top (with no spacers) and then install the tiles. It makes a much nicer looking job, in my opinion. I install the edging using the same adhesive that I use for the tiles, and then let it dry. Then I install the tiles on top of it. This method is especially useful behind the stove, where there is no countertop to hold things straight. When I install the edging I make sure to enbed it into the adhesive as far as it will go, and then scrape off all the adhesive from the top of the tile edging flange so that the tiles have a flat surface to stick on. After it dries it would easily prevent any tile from sliding down while the tile adhesive cures.
