Q:Can I use this on a wooden chair that was first spray painted white, to protect the paint, or will it give a yellow tint?

Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for reaching out, Iris. While Rust-Oleum Varathane Oil-Based Polyurethane Spray can be applied as a protective top coat for painted wood, it will dry with an amber hue that can appear yellow when applying over white surfaces. Instead, we recommend Rust-Oleum Varathane Water-Based Polyurethane as it dries to a crystal clear finish. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Varathane-11-25-oz-Clear-Semi-Gloss-Water-Based-Interior-Polyurethane-Spray-Paint-200181/100131610 -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14

Q:I read that the oil-based will mellow out to a golden color in time. How much time are they talking about, a week, a year, what? How dark would the eventual golden color be? Thanks

A:  I don’t see it changing over time. It is a little yellow which   gives a little glow which makes the finish a little richer than using a clear product.  I suggest that you buy a can and do a sample. After the drying time I don’t think it changes much if at all.

A:  Happy to clear things up! Rust-Oleum Varathane Oil-Based Ultimate Polyurethane Spray will have a warm, golden tone to it, and this tone will not fade over time. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

A:  One year should be plenty :P not sure why I got this one to answer, but it should be dry to the touch in 4 hours, light usability in 48 hours, and rough usability might be best to wait a week.

A:  Happy to help, Nick! In ideal conditions, Rust-Oleum Varathane Oil-Based Ultimate Polyurethane Spray is dry to the touch after 2 hours, but we recommend waiting at least 24 hours before resuming normal use of the surface. Heavier coats, cooler temperatures, or higher humidity can extend the listed dry times. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

A:  Depends a lot on temp, and humidity. I’m in central Florida, it’s kinda humid, so it will take longer. But, as a rule any clear finishes, are going to be 6-8 hours to handle,LIGHTLY. 48, till fully dry. BUT, don’t set something on it for at least, 5-7 days. And if it’s still soft when you press a finger nail into it, wait longer

A:  The manufacturer gives that information on the can, "Dries to the touch in 2 hours. Dries hard in 4 hours." Anyone who has used paint will tell you that environmental factors will change dry time greatly: air flow, temperature, humidity. Will dry much more quickly in the sun on a warm day than it will in a damp basement. The term "fully use" is also subject to interpretation. Depends on what sort of use. In my experience, most paint keeps curing for at least a week. Longer = less soft finish.

A:  If you put on heavy coats, you will be waiting a LONG TIME. It is best to apply a light coat, and then wait for that to dry before applying another coat.

A:  Rust-Oleum Varathane Oil-Based Ultimate Polyurethane Spray is intended for use on wood surfaces. We also do not recommend it for use in sinks, due to the constant exposure to water. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

A:  We like the way you think! Yes, Rust-Oleum Varathane Oil-Based Ultimate Polyurethane Spray can be used on previously finished surfaces and on bare wood. For the best results, we recommend applying several light coats a few minutes apart. You also want to ensure that you are applying in a well-ventilated space. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

Q:Hi, I'm finished with 3 coats of spraying on the Semi-Gloss. I used it on a Maple Tabletop I built. The Poly was applied over Varathane stain. The finish is very nice, very smooth but flat with no shine. How do I rub or polish this finish out?? Please Help!!! I need to finish it today. It's been 48 hours since my final coat, it dried very well in my heated garage. Thanks, Steve R

A:  Thanks for reaching out, Steven! Please keep in mind that it's important to continuously shake the can so that you can ensure your semi-gloss finish. We put flattening agents in the product and if they happen to settle, you may not see as much shine. The good news is that you can absolutely apply a polish or a coat of a different sheen of the Rust-Oleum Varathane Oil-Based Polyurethane if you should choose to. If you apply polish, keep in mind that you may have reapply with wear and tear. If you choose to do another sheen of the Varathane Oil-Based Poly, we suggest a light sanding with a 180 sandpaper prior to application to ensure best results. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Varathane-11-oz-Poly-Gloss-Spray-Paint-6-Pack-266236/203367793?keyword=varathane+266236&semanticToken=212t00000+%3E++st%3A%7Bvarathane+266236%7D%3Ast+cnn%3A%7B0%3A0%7D+cnb%3A%7B0%3A0%7D+oos%3A%7B0%3A1%7D+br%3A%7Bvarathane%7D%3Abr+rt%3A%7B266236%7D%3Art+dln%3A%7B581136%7D+qu%3A%7Bvarathane+266236%7D%3Aqu - Rust-Oleum Product Support 1

A:  3 coats should get you a hard and smooth finish. You probably need to spray it on thicker.
