Q:Why is this only sold by the case?

Answer This Question

A:  I don't know why they don't sell single gallon cans. Might it be a packing issue? My guess is that most people that buy it are contractors that use a lot.

by|Jan 4, 2020

A:  You can buy it by the gallon online from other sources--just do a search.

by|Nov 29, 2020

A:  Great question, Rose! The reason online products are sold by the case is for shipping purposes. In many instances, including this one with Rust-Oleum Zinsser Gardz Primer, items must be shipped by case quantities. For this reason, when purchasing items online, they must be purchased in this way. For individual cans, we recommend visiting your local Home Depot store to see if they have the product in stock. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5

A:  I have no idea, because a gallon will do 2 or 3 average size in a house.

        Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for reaching out! When dry, Rust-Oleum Zinsser Gardz Water-Based Sealer may be topcoated with any standard architectural water-based or oil-based primer or topcoat. Gardz is compatible with all types of joint compounds and spackling pastes and any texture or popcorn finish may be applied over it. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

A:  Not sure if the question was fully answered. I dont think joint compound is considered as construction adhesive.

Q:Can I use this for a concrete floor primer to help peel and stick vinyl floor tiles adhere better to the bare concrete?

            Answer This Question

A:  Sara, If that is what you need, I would not use Gardz for that. I would use R- 35. It is also sold at HD. It has a bit of a tacky effect when it is dry. It sticks to just about everything.

            by|Mar 10, 2020

A:  Thank you for reaching out, Sara. Rust-Oleum Zinsser Gardz Primer will not be able to promote adhesion of peel and stick vinyl floors. We need to know more about your application to make the best recommendation for you. Please feel free to call us at 888-855-1774 to discuss further. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5

A:  Is your concrete floor resting on soil? If so, I wouldn't recommend Gardz. It is an interior grade product and I would worry about the flux of water vapor upward from the ground. If your concrete floor is a slab with an air space beneath it (as in a multistory steel or concrete frame building. Then I suppose it could work. Either way, I think there are products that are specifically made for use on concrete to prepare it for vinyl floor tiles (peel and stick or otherwise). I would suggest using one of those products.

Q:Can this be used to paint as a primer or initial adhesive coating over vinyl wallboard that is often found in mobile homes? Most of the time they seem to require oil based primers and I am tryin to avoid that.

A:  Sorry but I honestly couldn't say yes or no......I know that it is used mostly to block the adhesive residue on wall paper after removal but not sure about vinyl wallboard that is in mobile homes

                by|Nov 24, 2019

A:  Gardz is designed for sealing/locking down porous surfaces. In my experience, both Kilz 2 and Bulls Eye 123 (both water based) adhere nicely to plastics and allow the use of Latex paint on plastic surfaces (Vinyl being a plastic). Kilz Adhesion is water based and specifically lists Vinyl as a surface it works on.

A:  Thank you for reaching out! Our Zinsser Gardz Problem Surface Sealer is recommended for new or damaged drywall, plaster, or cement surfaces. For vinyl wallboard, we recommend priming with our Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Primer: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Zinsser-Bulls-Eye-1-2-3-1-Gal-White-Water-Based-Interior-Exterior-Primer-and-Sealer-2001/100398391 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2

A:  Yes. Gardz can be used on wallboard. But there is another product at HD that may work better. I have used it several times on this. The product is R- 35. It is made by Roman. It sticks to anything.

                    by|Mar 10, 2020

A:  Yes it can. It may require two coats, or a bit of working it in with roller. Get a good paint with primer as well. I have done several Mobil homes this way.

Q:want to paint marlite panel, how do i prepare surface

                      Answer This Question

A:  Gardz really shines when used on porous surfaces. Particularly damaged drywall surfaces. It penetrates the drywall and dries hard so other coatings - drywall mud, paint, wallpaper - can be applied without bubbling. On the other hand, Marlite is a completely nonporous surface. I looked up "how to paint Marlite" on Hunker.com and they suggest washing the Marlite thoroughly with soap and water solution, lightly sanding to bring up a "key", re-dusting the panels, then priming with a paint primer. I would recommend a bonding primer. Then a coat of paint. Hope this helps!

A:  You need to purchase R 35 there is a RX 35 two different products. RX 35 is not aggressive enough to hold over merlite R 35 is a super bonding material. If your painting. I would R 35 it first. Then apply Gardz over that to paint

A:  Rust-Oleum Zinnsser Gardz Problem Surface Sealer is a clear, waterbased acrylic resin sealer designed for interior application to porous surfaces prior to painting, texturing or wallcovering. You will want to ensure the surface is clean and dry prior to application. Since this is a sealer type product, you will want to prime prior to topcoating to ensure the best coverage with the topcoat. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

A:  While it might help a little, I would recommend going over it with an odor blocking primer (assuming the you need the Gardz for another goal). My experience with odors is that they are tough and even the special purpose odor blocking primers have trouble.

While Rust-Oleum Zinsser Gardz Water-Based Problem Surface Sealer is great for sealing damaged and new surfaces, it does not help block odors. A:  Glad to help out! Rust-Oleum Zinsser Gardz Primer may be applied using HVLP or airless sprayer systems. Use a 0.011 to 0.013 tip and 800-1200 psi for airless application. Maintain a distance of at least 18 to 24 inches between the spray tip and the surface. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5

A:  Rust-Oleum Zinsser Gardz Problem Surface Sealer is designed to help seal problem surfaces to prep them for painting. This product helps seal in wallpaper adhesive to prevent it from reactivating when coated with water-based products. This is a thinner coating and we do recommend applying a coat of primer before applying your topcoat. A:  Gardz should have been used/is made to be used on the brown paper damage of Sheetrock. It keeps the moisture from the mud from bubbling the Sheetrock. But yes you need to prime any new mud. At that point any primer will do. Gardz is like putting a layer of plastic on whatever problem walls it is used on. It basically prepares the damaged area for further steps of restoration.
