Modified wrench
Grind the outside of the openend wrench down until it fits inside the access hole to the nut. Then you have more room to wrench the nut.

They serve their purpose, but are a huge pain to...
They serve their purpose, but are a huge pain to install. The access hole for the wrench is incredibly small, so getting the nut on the bolt required some finesse. During tightening, I used two methods:1. Hold the nut in place with a screwdriver and rotate the handrail2. Use a flat head screwdriver to try and catch each corner and slowly advance the nutBoth were not fun. If I ever have to install a railing again, I am going to find more user-friendly hardware.

The statement that you're "going to find more user-friendly hardware" is the perfect way to introduce you to the Spring Bolt, which will save you time, money, and heart-ache. The rail-bolt method you used is what many pro's use to fasten hardware. It has legacy behind it, and has been the method that's been used for years. But the Spring Bolt (SKU #622599) Rail to Rail kit is the way to go if you're seeking a user-friendly kit.

Thanks for the kind words, HomeDepotCustomer. One of the features with this kit is that the alignment must be precise to avoid a lot of sanding of edges. We do offer a kit called the Spring Bolt (#202088525), which allows for some margin of error. See the video on the Spring Bolt page for additional information. Thank you.

Did not look exactly as in picture, but it worked well anyway. I ended up using a slightly different method than the instuctions provided, and it ended up looking good without anything showing on the outside. Note: the nut is not notched, but a 1/2" hex. Make sure to have a sleek enough wrench (narrower than 1", if you want to be able to use the plug that comes with it), to tighten it up.
