Q:Can this be used to safely join two 8 foot sections of 6002 to create a 16? handrail? Does this also need a scarf joint, or is the butt just fine?

Answer This Question

A: Hi Daniel, great question you're asking. If your handrail will be mounted to a wall, supported by handrail brackets, then these Spring Bolts will work just fine for that type of application. Take care to not to drill up into the actual fastener to mount the brackets. Placing a handrail bracket within a foot of the joint is recommended for added strength. That said, we would not recommend using the Spring Bolt if you plan to drill holes for balusters on open handrail designs. Drilling holes for balusters in rails joined together with rail bolts (or any kind of joinery), runs the risk of hitting the actual hardware fastener if trying to space the balusters evenly is desired. If you have additional questions or need more information, we will reply as quickly as we can. Or you can contact our Customer Care Team at 678-455-5188 (M-F, 8am-4pm ET) and we can answer your questions directly. Thank you!

Q:Can i use two of these to attach a newell to the flloor?

    Answer This Question

A: Yes you certainly can. My recommendation would be to glue the newel and have plenty of material under the newel to get that “bite” or grab. Make sure you aren’t too high on the post. I use these always for jewels. There is a tool that’s needed as well to tighten the bolt down.

    by|Oct 12, 2023

A: This device is for securely attaching a rail to the newel. Do not use it to attach the newel post to the floor. A newel post needs a much sturdier attachment at the floor and to a knee wall if available. Recommend a Box Newel kit and or Floor post mounting bracket kit Also, lots of "How to..." videos to reference on You Tube

A: Hi Mike, please take a look at Internet #202088455. This is a newel attachment kit. Thanks!

A: No, these are for attaching the newel post to railing only. Also these are 2 grade metal at best, and the shear load that you will put on them when the newel post moves back in forth will break them. They make a different kit for attaching the newel post to flooring.

          by|Dec 30, 2021

A: I would not recommend using this type of bolt to anchor a newell post because you would be relying on the thread of the bolt to hold the post. This could easily pull through the wood it is screwed into which is typically plywood or pine floor sheathing and pine framing materials.

            by|Jan 7, 2022

A: You can, but there are other options which you should consider and chose which one works best for you.

A: Yes, install them on diagonal corners of the newall and follow the instructions regarding dimensions and hole sizes.

A: Hi worker, thanks for the question. The best tool to use for this task is the Rail Bolt Wrench (Item# 205864570). It is designed to fit into the drilled-out holes that have the nut and washer. If you have additional questions, we'll reply as quickly as we can. Thank you.

                    Answer This Question

A: Hi Marc, thanks for the question. You can use this rail bolt kit to attach a returned end to your handrail. You can also use the Rail to Rail Spring Bolt Kit (#202088525), which you might find to be easier and less time consuming. There is a video that explains the principle behind the Spring Bolt on the landing page of that product.

If you have additional questions, we'll reply as quickly as we can. Thank you!

                      Solved my railing attachment problem
This worked great. I attached a railing elbow onto the Newell post and had fine results. I did have to find a very thin 1/2" crescent wrench to fit into the 1" diameter hole I drilled. The 1/2" oak plug they gave with the item will not work since there is no way to turn the nut and tighten it in that size hole. Check out the picture.

Very solid and well made. I found these to be very easy to work with and they worked perfectly to resolve the issue I was dealing with. Good choice.

Not very easy to tighten that nut in that small hole. There are much better fasteners, such as zipbolt.

You are correct, the wrench is sold separately from this product. Thank you for the suggestion to add that to the description! We will get that updated! SureWood-LNL

Rail bolts are great.. but they don't do much good if Home Depot doesn't carry the appropriate wrenches/tools to install them.
