Aside from this system trying to be smart and running the ac even when no one is home It seems that it cant take the heat. My ac was out for two weeks. I removed the nest to protect it form and when we went to install it the screed had delaminated from the glass cover. The screen also clearly shifted back a little as you can see the edges of the display. This sucks. Installed by a pro when apparently the pro install 5 year warranty wasn't around. Out of warranty by 6 months form the short two year warranty. This isn't a device you carry around and beat up all day. Its a 300$ thermostat. It should last longer than this. delaminating is a clear sign of going with the lowest bidder to make the product. Nest offered a 20% off coupon of another thermostat. Didn't want it because it wont work on the ecobee.

Have had this thermostat installed for two weeks and it is working well so far. The features are good and I installed it myself. It was a very easy install. Only three cons to this package. One, the auto sense needs a dimmer, at night when this thing illuminates it is VERY bright. We have it installed in our bedroom hallway by the bath and we don't need a night light anymore... It's a little harsh when you are walking down a dark hallway and the Nest screen lights up. It's like a spotlight! Two, the included back panel adapter is handy, especially for upgrades like mine wherein you are replacing a large square former thermostat. BUT, the back plate does not match the stainless finish of the next, in fact it doesn't match at all. Even piano black would be better. See picture. Three, the installation instructions are good but the stop short of everything you'll need to do in regard to connecting the Nest to an account. IT would be nice if the printed instructions also included a prompt about linking the device to your account and then also linking the device to your phone. Overall i'm happy with this device, very polished presentation, and good user interface both on device and within app.

This review is for those people who have older in floor radiant heating systems. Our in floor radiant heating system was made by Heatizon in the year 2001. Regarding the types of thermostats out in the market place, there are at least 4 different types. There is “high voltage” (120 – 240 VAC), “low voltage” (24-48VAC) and “millivoltage”. The Nest thermostat is designed for “low voltage” (24 -48 VAC). But, amongst the “low voltage” types, there are two distinctly different configurations. There is a somewhat newer version that sends an AC voltage (24 – 48 volts AC) up a “Red Wire” to the thermostat, and receives 24 volts down the “White wire” to turn on the heating system when it senses cold temperatures. The 2nd type, which we happen to have, has a simple switch to turn on the heating system. IE, very simply, switch closed by the thermostat = heat is being applied through the floors, switch open = heat is off. This means NO AC voltage can be applied to this system or damage will occur! Nest is not compatible with this type of system without relays + transformer. So, the first step to understanding is: Which of these two types do you have? How do you tell? Well, the first obvious thing to do (which I should have done) is to call the manufacturer of your in floor heating system. They will simply tell you that you A: have to use 24 volts AC to turn on your system, or B: Close a switch to turn on your heating system. Knowing the answer to this is vital to successfully installing a Nest. If your in-floor heating system company is gone or unreachable, there are a few characteristics that will tell you that it is the “switch” type of system and not the “I need 24 VAC” down my wires type of system. 1st, rip the old thermostat off the wall, you may be surprised to see batteries inside it. This is a big clue. Newer systems are electric and run off the Rh + common wires. Older systems that are “switch” type often have batteries in them. I only figured this out while installing the Nest; I took the old thermostat off the wall and found batteries in it! What are batteries doing in this device? Well, the older systems used to run off of Mercury blob switches. And thermostats that replaced Mercury blob switches were newer (but still old by today’s standards) made to look like the old Mercury blob switches to the heating systems they controlled. Another clue that you have an older type system is figured out by checking the voltage between Rh and C or Rh and any other wire. If you see some random DC voltage (like 10 or 5 or 14 volts) but no AC voltage, it is likely and older “switch type” low voltage system like ours is. If you see 24 – 48 volts AC (with the volt meter set to measure AC voltage) then it is a newer system that will need the AC voltage to turn it on and off. The Nest thermostat is designed to run the 24-48 VAC type system. No good for “switch type” low voltage systems. Except if you use relays such as I did. Realizing that my in floor radiant heating system made by HEATIZON simply wanted switches to be closed to turn it on and off, I decided to create that using relays. I purchased an electrical enclosure box (“BUD Industries JBH-4961-KO Steel NEMA 1”, for fire safety), a bunch of fuses (“DIGITEN 5X20mm AGC Fuse Holder Inline” for fire safety) a 24 VAC transformer (“Honeywell AT140A1000 40Va, 120V Transformer – 60 Hz”, NOT DC!) and a relay (“Electronics-Salon 1 PCS Dual SPST-NO 10Amp Power Relay Module, AC/DC 24V Control Voltage”) that operated by having 24 VAC (Again not DC!) as inputs. I had two Nest systems so I bought a two in one relay package and a single 24 VAC transformer powerful enough to run the two Nest systems. I will attach pictures of the whole mess to this review. I assembled all those components in the basement where the Heatizon controllers were located. Now, here is one minor issue: I got lucky because someone had previously installed a “Fan controller green wire” that was connected to my old thermostat. It turns out, as the support person from Heatizon explained to me, that because I was using in floor radiant heating, this wire was un-used. Hence I simply repurposed this wire as the new “common” wire connected to the “C” port in the Nest controller. I connected the other end of this green common wire to one of the AC two transformer output screws in the basement. I connected the red “Rh” input of the Nest (on the main floor) to the other 24 VAC output screw (in the basement). I then connected the same “C” screw from the AC transformer to the low side input of the dual relay (about a foot). The high side input of the dual relay was connected to the “W1” input via white wire to the NEST (basement to main floor). So, the Nest is now no longer touching the Heatizon in floor radiant system in any way. The relay output switch is connected to the red and white input screws of the Heatizon system. So, now the Nest gets 24 VAC (actually approximately 25 -26 volts as these transformers vary a little bit) all the time via the red and common (in my case green) wires. That makes the Nest power up and be happy. When the Nest wants to turn the heating on, it sends 24 VAC down the White (W1) wire to the input of the relay in the basement. The relay then closes a switch whose output is connected to the Heatizon red and white wire inputs. The Heatizon system then turns on the heat. This all works great and I have the WIFI capable Nest thermostats now that so many people loved in their reviews. Would I do this all again knowing what I would be in for? Yes absolutely as I learned a lot and now have a system that I trust.

I like many features of this thermostat especially that you can control it from your phone. Sadly the wiring didn't work and I will have to pay to have the heating company to re-install it. I did check with Nest to verify that my furnace and air conditioner would work but there is some problem with it and the air conditioning wouldn't come on.

Prior to getting the Nest I had a Honeywell Wifi Smart Thermostat RTH9580WF for several years. http://www.homedepot.com/p/Honeywell-Wi-Fi-Smart-Thermostat-RTH9580WF/203926327 I liked the Honeywell thermostat, but the sub-par app experience and lack of heat pump controls frustrated me. The Nest is hands down a better thermostat and I love it so much more in the month I've had my Nest. The things I love the most: - I have a 2 stage air-source heat pump and it gives me much better control over how to control the efficiency vs. comfort of my heat pump setup. I can set my lockout temperature of the heat pump and configure how aggressively I want the thermostat to use only the stage 1 heat pump (that's more efficient, but takes longer to heat). I've been able to run my system much more efficiently since getting the Nest. - The app experience is so much better than Honeywell's app. The app is more responsive, loads faster, and has more features - Integration with Google Home is also much better than Honeywell. The Nest reacts nearly instantaneously to voice commands. With the Honeywell there would be a 3-5 second lag. - Design is beautiful. It fits so well into my home

$249.00 is very expensive, but worth it!
I moved into a brand new home two years ago. The one on the wall was cold or warm. I always wanted one of these, so I finally did it! It is awesome! The features are amazing, my favorite is the away status. I look at my FPL bill and it's already saving me money. Folks don't wait, get one, you'll be so glad you did!

I bought the nest 3rd gen on black Friday because I was tired of having to get out of bed to change the thermostat. I evaluated the Nest and the Sensi WiFi units and found the Nest to be superior. The biggest thing I liked about the Nest is the learning software and the away features. Instead of having to turn down the thermostat each time I leave the house, the Nest addresses this for me. I also learns what days and times I leave making it so you really do not have to think about adjusting the temperature. The Sensi does not have either of these features so I opted to pay a bit more for the convenience. Installation was very simple. 2 items to note while installing. Label your wires as you dissemble your existing thermostat and put some heavy tape around the wires while you are working so the wire harness does not pull back into the wall. The 2 flaws I found with the product, and why it did not get 5 stars is the learning and schedule. If you stay consistent with your adjustment when you first install the unit it will learn exactly what you want it to. However, if you are a bit inconsistent it may create an odd schedule as it did for me. As far as the schedule, the system begins heating at the time it is told, it does not perform a predictive plan to have the house at temp when it is scheduled. This would be a great feature if nest updates their software. Therefore, you will need to plan your schedule ahead by about 30-60min to account for the heating/cooling cycle. All in all it has been a great addition to the house and I have heard smart devices like this can increase home value.

Installation was very easy and straight forward. Downloading the app, and pairing it the Amazon Echo was also very easy. Looks very good, and the included mount plate looks very nice as well. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is I wish it would allow different colors on the initial display as you walk by.

Doesn't work right, 3 years no fix
One huge flaw needs to be fixed immediately I bought this unit in 2013 because my roommates kept messing with the AC temperature Now, each year I have to call nest and tell them to fix the locked range setting. I have it programmed for 66° daily, Phoenix Arizona weather is mild, so I'm saving a bunch – – until someone touches the locked display and immediately the temperature settings changed to 78 to 83° That is fine during the summer, but when I switch over to heat in the winter, it never remembers the settings in the lock mode from the previous winter – – instead, if anyone touches the dial, they can set my house to roast at 83° – – the very reason I bought this unit is so that people can't mess with the temperature setting. This is the biggest failure on their part, and they need to fix it. They needed to fix it since day one, but they just don't care. I'm searching elsewhere for a company that actually cares These people suck!

Extremely simple to install and use. We like to keep the house cool when we are not home and this is perfect for micromanaging our time home and away. I have an erratic schedule, so the convenience of the app really helps with warming the house before I get home.

These work great once you have them connected properly. I bought three for my three zone heating system but for some strange reason the one for the basement zone didn't like the fact that there were three wires connected to it for AC (the other two Nest units for the Master Bedroom and Living Room worked fine when wired exactly the same way as the Nest in the basement). The Nest battery in the basement would discharge within a few days and had to be charged with the mini USB connection on the back. I finally ran three new wires to the Nest in the basement from the Taco heating control panel and connected the "C" terminal to provide constant charging. However, if I connected the Yellow and RC wires to the cooling side of the Nest base the Nest would not work at all. Fortunately I don't use the outside AC units to air condition the basement. The only thing that I could think of is that maybe the wires to the basement AC unit are not wired correctly.

Did not work after repeated attempts. If you have a 2 wire heating system, which is common with older homes with forced hot air, it can cause your furnace to malfunction. The issue is that it the Nest needs to draw power from 2 (W1 and Rh), it only does it when the heat is on. It caused my furnace to click constantly like it was getting a intermittent signal. It would get the fan going and the furnace heat going but the heat/gas would cut out and then just blow cold air. What a shame. I hope this did not damage my furnace. I really loved the interface, the look and the IOS app. What I need is a C wire to power the Nest separately. This is going back and I am going with a cheap Honeywell.

I bought this on Black Friday and it on for about 3 days. My old thermostat came with the house in 1997, so I jumped on the price reduction of $50. Day 1, I set it to 67 degrees because that is what we had it on my old thermostat. Then we realized that it was very comfortable, so we decided 66 degrees on the 2nd day. We were still comfortable, so we set it at 65 for the third day. It is fine at 65 degrees. 1st day Nest told me that the heater was on 2.25 hours, then 1.75 hours on the second day, and 1.5 hours on the third day without any drastic weather change. I now see how the Nest can save you money. You do not need a C wire and it is really easy to install and connect to your wifi and you can set your own schedule with temperature settings. The screw driver that came with the Nest is useless. You need your own Philips (+ screw driver) with a longer handle. I should have painted the wall before I installed the Nest. Oh well ... I will paint the wall during the summer. The only thing I would love to have would be an icon on the main screen to easily and quickly state that you are leaving the house so that the thermostat will turn off.

My previous review was in error. I confused this purchase with one from another merchant. The Nest thermostats are fabulous. I bought two of them and installed them very easily. They function as advertised and are a definite upgrade from the antiquated "programmable" thermostats they replaced.

At first I was hesitant to purchase the Nest. I have 2 adult children who are in and out at different times of the day (and night) and I was worried about the Nest learning what my desired schedule actually is. Once I realized I could control it from the app on my phone, I decided to purchase it. Now I'm glad I did. It has learned my schedule and hasn't been affected by my children's' schedule.
