Easy to use and store! The extra layer of safety necessary when soldering with a torch. After sweating several copper/brass fittings close to a wall there was no sign of heat damage to either the wall or the heat shield.

Up in Smoke
I got one of these a while back and it worked well if the joint wasn't in close to or right in front of the area I wanted to shield. I recently had to do some joints that were very tight to the studs and sheetrock behind a bathtub and quickly had the blanket catch fire using a mapp torch. I figured it was possibly an age thing so I got another and also dialed back to the trusty old propane torch and while it wasn't as quick, any time the flame was impinging on it the new blanket started to light off. It seems less of an issue when I put it behind some sheet metal and use extra care but it definitely isn't truly fireproof or inflammable even if it does help with some thermal protection when the flame isn't going right at it. In a jam when you need something you can grab off the shelf it is better than nothing but disappointed when I compare the advertised details versus real performance. The next time I need to do something like this I'll certainly be looking at something different, as a firefighter I understand how quickly this could go wrong and would hate to see someone rely on this only to have a fire start.

I bought this when planing to do some soldering inside on some copper pipes. I thought it might come in handy. I could not have done the job without this. It kept me from catching the wall on fire. I have recently bought a couple more to aid in covering more area. They are worth their weight in gold!!

Shield not so good
I used the heat shield to protect the surrounding wood from fire when soldering copper shower pipe. The area around the copper pipe was tight and I placed the shield between the wood and pipe. The Mapp torch started burning the shield almost immediately, which then set off smoke alarm. I pulled the shield and doused it with water from the sink. That was the first and last time using the shield. I found some s-clip stove pipe in the basement and cut that to fit in the tight space around the copper pipe. That worked much better without setting off the alarm.

soldering heat shield
Picked this up for soldering around wood studs. It is thinner and lighter than what I expected, almost like a heavy felt, but it seems to work in absorbing or dissipating the heat.

Works great even with direct heat.
Handy but could use some kind of rope to help hold in place

Heat shield against vinyl siding
While not designed to protect vinyl, inserting a piece of plywood between the shield and the vinyl, preferably wet, whether a 1/4 to 1/2 in., should suffice to protect the vinyl or any other such material for aa quick soldering job. The trick is to prepare the pipe thourghly in advance and be very careful where you point the flame. Yes the pipe will get hot so don't linger with the flame. A little wet cloth around the pipe where it contacts the vinyl would be useful. Best would be to solder the outside connections first and then run the finished pipe through the vinyl and solder the pipe to the supply inside which will be farther away from the vinyl. An alternative would be to solder a threaded socket to the pipe, which also make valve replacement in the furure easier, and then run the pipe thru the wall and solder to the supply inside. I've done both, successfully, and I'm not a plumber.

Product worked very well
Definitely help keep me from burning my house down when I used a propane torch to solder a leaking copper waterline. I would highly suggest using this product
