This is exactly what I am using it for. I found that if I leaned it against the wood, the wood still got hot - but not as hot as it would have if I was not using this heat shield. However, I found that if I moved it an inch or so away, the wood does not get hot at all. The only thing is, I have to check it every once in a while to make sure it hasn't fallen over as I just have it up on edge, folded slightly for balance, between the heater and the wooden leg of my computer desk. If you're more creative than I am and can figure out how to use it another way, have at it - but it works for me, as is.

Do you use it dry or do you have to wet it?

It is meant to block direct flames and mitigate heat transfer for a short time. It is non flamable and it works with 1000deg flames. I cant say yes , but wouldnt say no.

How effective of a shield is it for MIG welding?

I wouldn't trust it for that. It caught fire when I was soldering. Mig welding would burn right through it.

can i use this product to cover a sprinkle head from busting

If you are referring to an indoor fire sprinkler system head, I guess you could. Remember, this will transfer heat, especially if it is in direct contact. I would ensure I provide a good air gap between the shield and the head, and minimize the heat directed towards the head as much as possible.

Such an excellent protective layer while having to do soldering. Keeps the heat source from burning up the building material while soldering in confine spaces. It serves as a barrier for flame that can withstand 2500 degrees. The shield has two brass eyelet holes to put onto screws for hands-free soldering. I've used the MAPP torch and protects extremely. A must have! I used it while soldering a single handle shower valve.

The price is worth the confidence that you don't short change the time/heat you put into soldering a joint because you're worried about starting a fire. Worked just as advertised and easy to place in the work area.

I needed to Sweat Solder a pipe 3 inches from a water heater, and wanted to make sure it was completely protected. I tested this on a few of the other soldering points and there was virtually no heat transfer from my Map-Pro torch. I also needed to sweat solder against some drywall and used this as well, with only about an inch between the wall and the pipe. It worked perfectly. I highly recommend it, and wouldn't have been able to complete the job safely without it. It is very lightweight, easy to tape against whatever you need.

This is fantastic tool when you need to solder a pipe next to wood. Used for years and bought another for more coverage. The material is thick and retains its shape. Can tuck into a corner or around another object to protect from excessive heat. Few times I've had to put a drywall screw through it to keep it pinned in the corner but didn't seem to damage the effect of the heat shield.
