Disposable Unit
At first it seemed like this was a good product. The first day I used it everything worked great other than it having a hard time starting. The next day it took forever to start and I noticed the pulley starter rope starting to cut through the pulley housing. Then the rope snapped rendering the unit completely useless. Needless to say I returned it and did not get another one. If you have a project that only needs it for 1 or 2 days then it’s not bad, but just know you’ll most likely have to return it. Luckily I only had two holes left when it broke so back to the ole hand held post hole digger I went.

Picked up my new auger, assembled it ,added fuel. ...
Picked up my new auger, assembled it ,added fuel. Hard to start for the first time. No big deal. Used for 10 min. Then tried to start second time and it took about 5 min to get it started. I was not happy. Contacted HD and they said bring it back, they would swap it out. 2nd auger is flawless.

I wasn't sure if this would work well or not...
I wasn't sure if this would work well or not but once I started using it, it worked great I love it. I have soil with clay but the auger rips right thru it unless you hit a stubborn rock hang on it will stop, and you need to remove the rock by hand.

Difficult to start
Bought this item to dig holes to plant trees. Once I had it running it worked well. It had a tough time making it through six to eight inches of clay but it did get through it. My son-in-law borrowed it to use for fence posts and to plant trees. He had the same problems getting it started that I had. On average, it took thirty-one pulls of the starter cord to get the engine to even sputter and another eight to ten pulls to get it to run. Yes, I used fresh fuel and used the mix provided. Would I recommend buying this machine? A hesitant "yes" because of the starting issue, but as I stated, once it is running it does a good job of boring an eight inch hole into the ground.

I was a little skeptical buying it but it went together easy one bolt, I did not see a shear pin....
I was a little skeptical buying it but it went together easy one bolt, I did not see a shear pin. When I used it, it dug in well and the ground was mostly clay and some stones. I braced the left handle against my side to keep it from turning as the digging go harder rather than try to hold it with just the handle as the torque increased. Overall as a one person auger it did the job.

I went to the Home Depot to purchase this fine item. To start with I could not get it to start. I left it after I felt as though my arm was going to fall off. It finally started. This machine would be great if you intend on making a lot of noise and cleaning out the holes periodically with a post hole digger. PLEASE and I mean PLEASE do not waste you're hard earned money on this. Highly over rated. I will be returning the unit to Home Depot and renting a tow behind.

Fantastic auger. Was on the fence to buy this vs. a manual post hole digger, and thought this might be too much machine for me. Pleasantly surprised how easy it was to dig a couple dozen holes without breaking a sweat!

Not for hard ground
I got about 6 inches into the ground with this. I got about 4 with a shovel... this auger may be great if you have very soft dirt to dig into, but it is a worthless paperweight and waste of $250 for me. Time to buy a real one that mounts to a tractor.

Easy to assemble. Quiet. Not as much torque as I’d prefer, the long stem attachment on the end of the auger works alone and doesn’t create dig space for the actual auger blades. So it doesn’t go very deep. Deepest I got was 12” in clay/silt and a about 30% sand and gravel. Should’ve been easy stuff.
