Dig Holes Quickly and Efficiently With an Auger

Efficiently dig uniform holes for fences, decking, or gardening with an auger. These tools look like giant spiral drill bits and do the same thing on a larger scale. Augers simplify digging, letting you achieve professional results with less physical effort. Read on for more about augers and their uses.

About Augers

We’ve got auger bits for holes ranging from 2 inches to over 20 inches in diameter. Battery augers help you make quick work of the job and conserve your energy. Power augers, or earth auger powerheads, utilize the same batteries as your other preferred power tool brands. This means you’re likely to find one to match your tool ecosystem. Choose a battery or gas auger based on your torque and power needs.

We carry auger tools, auger tools with a bit, and auger bits. They’re durable and made to withstand the demands of twisting into difficult ground. Avoid using impact drivers and power drills with auger bits, as they’re not meant to handle the job.

Types of Augers

Here’s a rundown of basic auger types and terms:

  • Use earth augers, also called ground auger drills, ground drills, or ground augers, for planting trees and construction purposes. One-person augers, made for smaller jobs, are more common than two-person augers. Some one-person augers have additional handles for another person to help hold to the tool steady.
  • Garden augers are small earth augers used for planting. Use them to reduce the effort of digging holes when planting bulbs or transplanting a batch of seedlings. We’ve got handheld or manual augers as well as battery.
  • Auger bits are basically huge twist drill bits that come in assorted sizes. They fit into the auger tool and make holes in a range of diameters and depths. An 8-inch auger is a standard size for big jobs.
  • Ice augers have a sharp tip to bite into the ice, as they’re made for ice fishing. Don’t use a regular drill with an auger bit because you’ll burn it out.

Large Augers

For deck building, construction, and setting fence posts, you’ll need a large auger. Sometimes they’re called fence post augers, but they’re just augers with a wide diameter. Keep in mind that the holes need to be one-third of the width of a post's height if you’re aiming to set the posts in concrete.

The more dense the soil or clay, the more oomph you’ll need to get through it. Consider a heavy-duty towable hydraulic rental for big jobs to ensure your holes are dug below the frost line. Extremely large augers may need two people to operate. Check out augers with a 12-inch diameter or more to dig wide holes, including select rental options.
