Cutting Is Fun Again
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Take the dread out of cutting grass. This new Ryobi mower is a pleasure. With the self-propelled feature, it was like strolling behind the mower. I was impressed with the ergonomics of the control handle. My old gas mower was like stretching your hands wide open just to grip the power and propelle control bars. And the speed control at your fingertips make this a breeze to operate. Of course the old days of pulling the cord until your arm hurts, are over. Push button start and runs quietly. I do believe my favorite feature, beside lithium power, is the single handle, all wheel adjusting bar. I can cut my yard and only use one battery. Convenient fold away handles allow you to store neatly away in the garage. So overall I give it a Five Star rating.

Great mower, plenty of power and easy to use!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I got this mower about a week ago and just got to test it out. Right off the bat I can tell it’s super sturdy and comparable to my previous mower that was gas powered. Speaking of gas mowers, I love the push button start on this one and I’m glad I don’t have to deal with the pull start anymore. Even though it’s a pretty big mower, it folds so storage has been really easy. Doesn’t take up much space in our garage at all. Doesn’t hurt that it looks nice too! My favorite feature is the Smart Trek technology that allows the mower to adapt to my walking speed. This makes mowing smooth and easy!

Just to preface the remainder of my review: the only reason I didn't give this mower a "5" star rating is because it's not clear how well the batteries will last when used in the summer heat. My initial impression of the mower is that the end result should be almost indistinguishable from a gasoline version. It has a standard-width cut and a dual-blade setup and allows options for side discharge, bagging, or mulching. We live in Georgia, so although the grass is dormant now it still had a few "hairy" spots that could benefit from a trim, and a test-run on the lawn (even though it's winter) proved favorable in terms of a clean cut. The mower deck height adjustment is done using a smooth-operating single lever on the side of the mower and includes multiple settings. The mower comes with two batteries and only one charger, and charging is relatively quick (~1 hour from start to finish). The mower head allows for both batteries to be loaded at once, with easy switching between the power source via a "key" that's located in the battery bay. This is useful and allows you to continue mowing without taking the time to retrieve the other charged battery, but it also means that if you need to mow longer than both batteries will last, you're still going to need to break and trek back to the charger with one of them for recharging. Considering these batteries are powering not just the blades but also the wheels and a headlight, it stands to reason the overall drain will probably increase when the temps are 90+, and it's also where the one make-or-break variable comes into play for me, and that is how well and for how long it can handle a Zoysia lawn when it's actively growing in mid-June. The inclusion of a headlight is a nice feature perhaps for some, but it reminds me of the headlights that are included on vacuum cleaners and makes me wonder how useful this feature is for most. If you currently have a self-propelled mower, you should find the learning curve to using this model is basically zero.

After mulching my yard, I was favorably impressed with Ryobi's new mower. It's been redesigned to improve handling and convenience. There are a pair of squeeze handles on the push bar that deactivate a kill switch when pulled in. While the squeeze handles are pulled in, you can start the mower with a push button. A thumb operated paddle is located beneath the squeeze handles to engage the rear-wheel drive. The speed is easily controlled with a slider behind the start button. The mower's only fault may be in the difficulty of assembling it's catch bag. While I was unable to match Ryobi's claim of 70 minutes of total run time, I was satisfied with the amount of yard that I was able to get mulched on a single charge. The mower performed flawlessly and it's initial level of quality is excellent.

This lawnmower is a great product. The only installation required out of the box is putting the bag together. It may require two people as one person may be needed to hold the bag. It is made of great materials. It is super light and easy to move around. The handles are solid aluminum. It has a built in LED light that turns on when operating handle is depressed. It comes with a double blade. It really does have great power for not being a gas mower. No maintenance on battery power tools. Well worth the money. It comes with two batteries, and a charger, a bagger, and mulching chutes.

RYOBI 21 in. 40-Volt Lithium-Ion Battery Brushless Walk Behind Dual-Blade Smart-Trek Mower - (2) 6.0 Ah Batteries & Charger I really like this mower for the following reasons - Its quiet operation compared to a gas mower. Cordless operation, meaning no gas or oil needed to operate or electric cord extension. Cuts as well as my gas mower. No major yearly maintnence needed to put away like that needed for a gas mower for winter or startup in spring. Thr Ryobi 40v cordless mower requires minimum maintnence other than maitaining a sharp cutting blade and keeping the under deck clean. Heavy duty construction. All metal deck. Its fold up design is great space saver for storing. The mower takes up aprox 18" x 24" of floor space. Being a 'self propelled mower' little effort is needed to walk behind. The speed of the propelled mower is regulated by setting the thumb slide on te handle. Duel blades for a cleaner cut. Should mulch a smaller clipping for better dispersement back to the lawn. Easy on / off clippings bag and body baffles for mulching are included. A side exhaust chute is also included and optioned. Operates on a rechargable 40v lithium battery. My unit came with two 6Ah batteries and a charger included. The 40v batteries are able to work with other Ryobi tools. I personally have a Ryobi 40v trimmer / edger and am pleased with it as well. My experience with Ryobi tools both hand tools and yard tools have all demostrated to me to be a reliable item. -----------------------------

This Ryobi 21 inch 40-volt HP lithium-ion battery powered brushless walk behind dual blade self-propelled mover does it all. It has 2, 6 ah batteries and charger and supplies plenty of power. The self-propelled mower makes the job easy and provides up to 70 minutes of runtime. It has a folding handle for easy storage a 7 position height adjustment. Hassle free push button start.

I got this mower to replace an older Ryobi 40V mower I have. That mower has worked great over the past couple of years, but I just wanted to upgrade to a self-propelled mower and wanted to go with Ryobi again as the first mower has been awesome. First thing I noticed while unboxing this one is how much heavier and solid this one is compared to my other. This thing is built to last. There really isn’t any assembly as it comes in the box folded for storage and is just about ready to go. If you want to skip the bag and go with mulching you have to install the mulching part which only takes a few seconds. Before I even turned it on I was happy I got this one as I like the little details. Folding the mower up for storage is so much easier now because it’s just one switch to release the handle. There’s one handle for the height adjustment, and the self-propel controls are right on the handle where they are easy to work with. I don’t have a lot of grass to mow this time of the year, but I took it out for a quick spin and wow, this mower really does feel like a gas machine. The motor is powerful and with the dual-blades it can get a bit loud. It is a bit louder than my previous Ryobi, but you can definitely tell it has much more power to it. I’m really happy I upgraded!

The RYOBI 21 in. 40-Volt Lithium-Ion Battery Brushless Walk Behind Dual-Blade Smart-Trek Mower - (2) 6.0 Ah Batteries & Charger Model # RY401150US is a new product from the RYOBI Brand. This Mower offers several nice features. The Brushless motor in combination with push button starting offers significantly high efficiency and performance. It’s equipped with dual battery ports allowing the user to easily switch batteries by repositioning the red key in the battery compartment. Having two 6.0 Ah Batteries offers plenty of run time to cut most any homeowner’s yard. If by chance you’re still mowing at sundown this machine has deck mounted LED headlights. The mower comes set up to bag but includes a mulch plug and a side discharge chute. I especially like the single lever deck height adjustment. Made in the USA this machine is supported by a 5 Year Mower and a 3 Year Battery Warranty.

This is one amazing piece of technology. It comes almost full assembled which was nice. Mower comes with a 5-year warranty and the 2 batteries that come with the mower have a 3-year warranty. It runs quiet and has amazing speed. I can go pretty fast. It's self-propelled making cutting the grass a lot easier. The mower has several height adjustments to get your lawn the perfect height. Mower comes with an easy removable bag. Mower folds away for easy storage and takes up little space. See demo link below for more details. I loved this mower and my grandson loves it too. He gave it a new name and loves how well it cuts the grass. It makes cutting grass much easier than the older gas mower we had. Each battery has 70 minutes of power, giving us more than enough time to cut the entire yard. Assembly was easy and it took no time at all. The instructions were easy to read. The mower is really quiet too, you can cut grass without disturbing your neighbors. Mower has a big, bright light on it too in case you're cutting grass at dusk. A key is required to power the mower to prevent it from running when it's not supposed to. There are many safety mechanisms in place to ensure this product is able to be used safely. Excellent, quality product like all of Ryobi's products. I definitely recommend this mower. It's a top of the line eco-friendly product. I received this product at no-cost in exchange for a free honest review.

This Ryobi walk-behind mower is one of the easiest mowers I have ever used! All the adjustments are super smooth and effortless. The handle folds down with a simple press of a lever. The entire deck can be adjusted with one lever (no need to independently adjust each wheel). You can adjust the overall height in seconds. The battery compartment is protected with a hinged cover to keep it clean and free of debris. The self-propelled feature is optional and toggled by a lever that you depress with your thumbs as you drive. At first, I thought this would be a nuisance to hold for long periods of time, but it takes barely any pressure to depress it so it does not wear out your grip. The self-drive also has a speed setting that can be controlled with a slider. The cutting mechanism is a two-blade cross-cut style which is great for clean cuts and effective mulching. The mower also includes a bright LED headlight on the front that comes on automatically. I don't really think this serves any purpose but it looks kind of neat and I suppose it could help you during those times when you are trying to finish up yard work at the end of the day. The only concern I have is that the entire body of the mower (including the cutting area underneath) is made of plastic. It is a very rigid plastic and the whole mower is very sturdy and well-constructed but I'll be curious to see how well the plastic body holds up compared to metal ones I've used in the past. The other minor detail is that the mower is quiet heavy and bulky. I think this is largely due to the self-drive mechanism that is housed inside. So if you are looking for something compact for a smaller yard or small storage space, this might not be the best option.

This new Ryobi battery lawnmower is awesome. Very well made with so many new features. The mower is ready to use as soon as you get home. Nothing to put together, just charge the batteries and your off and running. I like the dual blade system for a clean cut. There is also just one lever to push to lift the handle and it locks in place. You also have a control on the top of the handle to control the self propelled feature. With two large batteries, there is enough juice to cut front and back yard and if you need more you can turn off the self propelled feature. You also get attachments to use without a bag, remove the bagger and hook up the side discharge shute. Even the appearance of the mower looks better than previous models and the competition. If your in the market for a great quality mower that will last for years to come , I highly recommend this Ryobi 21 inch model.

This lawnmower is very well-made. I got this to replace one I purchased several years ago primarily because this mower is self-propelled and the batteries weigh much less than my older mower. Right out of the box, using this mower is practically intuitive, but I will read all the instructions before I use it! I did put one of the batteries in it just to test it and it started up right away and sounds powerful. My son pushed the self-propel button which we had to turn off immediately before it went sailing away! I will use this primarily as a mulching mower, but all the attachments to use this as a side-chute or grass catching mower are included as well. Come on spring! I'm tired of winter and looking forward to mowing my lawn this year!!

      Died during second use
It worked well the first time we used it, but died during the second use. Apparently, the blade controller module commonly fails. Yes, it is under warranty, but despite living in a densely populated area, the nearest repair shop is more than 40 miles away.

        Compact Clippings
Bought this unit on 5/23/24 with in-store-pickup the next day. Read virtually all reviews, and having used the mower am really pleased. The dual-blade configuration yields fine, compacted clippings collected in the generously-sized grass catcher bag--about twice as much as from my gas models. The only assembly required was installing the grass catcher bag onto the grass bag frame, and then attaching that unit to the mower. Very quiet blade motor.

          Didn't get my money's worth
The self propelling feature went out about a year into purchasing the mower. I tried contacting ryobi with basically every method imaginable and couldn't get ahold of anyone. Any warranty you buy won't matter because they don't answer. As for the performance, it's just okay. It has trouble in slightly wet grass that's thick. It's a bit wonky when it wants to go into overdrive to cut heavier blades of grass. The light on it is pretty useless, no one is mowing at night. Very average performance.

            DON'T DO IT
It's absolute junk. Do a YouTube search for "Ryobi lawn mower safety switch" and you'll find ENDLESS videos of people with the same problem I have - a lawn mower that constantly shuts itself off, due to their horrible quality, plastic switches. Using the self-propel feature at more than 1/4 of it's speed will trigger the safety switch to turn off the blade. But it has a lifetime warranty, right? Good luck getting Ryobi to respond. Garbage product from a garbage company. $600 down the toilet.

the batteries are next to impossible to get out of the lawnmower after use. I have to use a screwdriver to pry them out. Also one of the batteries is very difficult to get into the battery charger. I have to ram it in to the charger several times before it makes contact and starts charging. The lawnmower does mow the lawn well enough though.

it's ok for a small yard
I could see this working if you have a small yard that is maintained regularly. I need 3 rounds of batteries to complete my lawn. speaking of which, the batteries included with my mower were clearly used and definitely don't run for the advertised amount of time

                Awful Battery Life
Pros: It was easy to assemble. I love that it stores folded.Cons: We purchased this one on accident, but since it was more expensive than the one we planned on buying, we figured it would be worth it. We were wrong. We have around a 1/4 acre property and mowable area is even less than that. The 2 batteries can't even get us through the front yard. Our yard has a little slope, but not much.Another gripe is that any slight release of the handle (like repositioning it) shuts it off.If we hadn't sold our push mower, I would use that instead of this. We have serious buyers remorse on this one.

                  Starter failed in two mowers
I bought two mowers for light landscaping work, invested in an extra battery too. Both mowers eventually developed starter issues. One I was able to replace on Home Depot warranty, the other was past 90 days since purchase. My only recourse for the unfixed mower is to drive 45 minutes to a certified Ryobi service center. Very disappointed, I don't think I will buy a Ryobi mower again.

This is the first battery powered lawnmower I've ever owned, but I have been pleasantly surprised with the performance. It was easy to assemble and we were in business in less than 10 minutes. The first mow of the season had grass that was at least 12" long and it took it all down like a champ with a clean and complete cut. I've now used it the last two weekends and I'm very happy with it. The batteries charge very quickly (in like 20 minutes from 1 bar to full power, and I love that they have power indicators on them. When the mower meets thicker grass, increasing resistance, it increases the blade speed momentarily to power through. The variable speed self-propelled function is also very helpful as the mower is quite heavy for the average person. I can push it manually, but when encountering longer grass, it's really nice to let the mower do the work. Overall this is fantastic for my needs, with about 1,500 sf of grass.

This mower replaced an older electric mower. My lawn was tall and damp for the first cut with this mower. It had the power to tackle the lawn conditions with minimal effort. My only complaint is I did not upgrade my old mower sooner.

Easy to set up but one of the bag clips broken. Had to re-package mower and return entire mower in original packaging to exchange. Mower works great, easy to adjust mowing height. Needed both batteries to cut small lawn.
