Not what I was looking for. Told associate that I needed to mortise a hinge. Guess I should have taken it on myself and not assumed that the home center professional would suggest what I asked for.

Awesome. Made is much easier to install a new door lock.

Did the job with minimal effort

The idea is great but the quality isn’t. The blade which cuts the outline broke. I was even babying it just in case but as luck would have it still broke.

A friend needed 10 of her door handles replaced and old round latches replaced to rectangular mortised style. I had her pick up this tool and went over the next afternoon to install everything. This thing worked great. My piece of advice to everyone is to make sure to bang it in hard a few times to really score the wood deep so when you use the "chisel" part, it takes everything out cleanly. Don't chisel too far, just rock out the last couple of mm.

The device works quite well to create the necessary cutout for locks. The screwdriver heads that are mounted on the device do not fit well and fall off frequently.

Needed to cut two latch mortises in a new door, and have a few more to do in the near future. Came across this tool and, after reviewing the “How to Use” video and several reviews, decided to give it a try. First thing I noticed after taking it out of the “bulletproof” packaging was how dull the cutters looked. Following the directions I aligned the tool on the door edge and gave it a few blows with a framing hammer, alternating between the “Hit Here” designated spots, then removed the tool to see how it was doing. The outline cut barely marked the surface and was clearly not deep enough to chip out. After another twenty-five (or more) alternating blows I guessed the outline cut was as deep as it would go and switched to the second part of the tool to chip the mortise out. Again, it took many blows to get the chip started, then the door edge split 3-4 inches down both sides. Trying to chip the other side of the mortise out was impossible without flipping the door over, so I gave up on the tool and pulled out my trusty chisel. The tool might work on softwood (like balsa) but it is near worthless on a standard door. One redeeming value is that it does lay out an accurate line to follow with your chisel. I give it one star for that.

You have to strike it very hard many times for the metal to dig in, but then for me, the door veneer cracked.

Both the scoring tool and chisel bent during use. It messed up my door because it was not build strong enough for the job. The scoring tool did not cut deep enough and bent when I hit it harder. When the chisel part bent it cut deeper than I wanted so the the depth is not even. Wish I had bough a good chisel instead, this went in the garbage where it belongs.

If you install a lot of doors, this is a must have tool.

The tool worked Excellent for the door. But did not work for the door jamb. The door stop trim is in the way of being able to use tool for both sides. However The tool saved me a ton of time and gave a professional finish.

I wish I had gone with the Router Latch Mortiser instead; I would have gotten much cleaner cuts. I chose this hammer type because I had already bought a bunch of new interior knobs for a rental property that have hard 90 deg corner edges so I thought this one would work better for that, since the mortiser/router set up would definitely leave rounded corners and would need some chiseling. The corners on the 'square' side were still rounded, so I still had to clean things up with a wood chisel.

If you don’t believe me when I say this tool is junk, find the instructions. Figure 3 literally shows instructions of putting a square (rectangle actually) peg into a round hole. They instruct users to somehow ram a rounded edges rectangular “guide post” into a round drilled hole with a diameter smaller than the length of the “guide post” I guess they intend for users to bash and deform that overlap out of the way to fit their tool?

Product worked great when I installed my new door knobs and dead bolts.

Don't bother. Cheaply made, 'square' template actually has rounded corners, so you'll have to hand-chisel them anyway. Nice idea, though.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This tool is undoubtedly helpful, but I don't think it is necessary for a fairly easy job so it isn't needed in my opinion. I do love that Ryobi makes it though because it shows how they want to make a tool for everything which is awesome. It is easy to use and should last a lifetime.

This tool is WELL worth the money. Reviews made me a little skeptical but if you don’t handle it like you’re a gorilla you will not break the item. This saved me a ton of time and I am so glad that I found this. I used this on 12 doors in my house and it worked wonders.

So I’ve used this on one door. So far so good. I’ll have a better feel once I’ve done a few more doors
