A:Â Hello, Jasonsfo - Thank you for your question. A99LM2 will help you create the space for the door latch. A99DLK4 will help you to make the hole for the doorknob/lock. You may need both if neither the latch hole nor the lock hole exists. I hope this helps! A:Â Some doors are metal faced with a wood core that shows on the side - such as a fire resistant door for the garage to house. It would work on that kind of door. It the door is all metal - at best it could probably be used to mark the hole to be cut out by some other method.

It takes a little while to get used to, but once you figure out the right technique the tool does a great job.

Chisel took Broke on 1st Use
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I like the concept a lot, and the scoring blade worked well for cutting out the outline for the strike plate, but the chisel metal broke upon 1st use. I was able to finish chiseling it out by hand with a regular chisel, but frustrating it broke so easily with a pine door. The chisel screws on with two screws, so it would sure be nice of ROYBI provided a replacement part, but I can’t find it.

RYOBI MAKES ANOTHER OPTION
I used this Ryobi product on hard oak doors and it was a struggle. Try instead the RYOBI Router Latch Mortiser jig, I rate IT 5 stars. Quick PERFECT job. If you don't have a router, buy a cheap one just for this job.

Product met the need, did a good job but not exceptional.
This device is all you need to remove a thin section of the door (where the door latch extends outward) to create space for the metal strike plate (see photo). It has 2 cutting inserts (one with rounded corners and one with more squared corners) that you affix into the green plastic block, you align this on the edge of the door and then strike the block with a hammer to drive the insert into the door's edge and create a cut-out edge that matches the shape of the metal strike plate. The you flip the device around so that the little black cutting edge (shown on the right of the image above) is stuck into the hole where the door latch will go. The cutting edge is at the proper depth for the metal strike plate. Tapping on the rounded edges of the device drives the cutting edge into the door (up or down) and shaves off a thin slice of the door, leaving a space that is the perfect shape and depth for the metal strike plate.
It does exactly what it's supposed to do. The first time I used it, I had to shift my grip on the device, which moved it slightly, so I had 2 slightly different insert cut-outs, so there is a small space around the metal strike plate. Not a big deal, but it's imperfect. Mostly due to beginner's error. Carefully position the device, hold it tight, hit it right, remove the cut-out, be happy.
This would be perfect if there was a way to better ensure accuracy for properly placing the cutting inserts on the door edge. Probably not worth taking a whole point off, but that was my only option.

Nice tool
Wow. I've struggled with creating a clean outline for the door latch before. With some sturdy hammer whacks on this tool, it creates the perfect outline. It has a template for rounded off latches and flip it over it has the template for squared off latches. Very nice.
However, I have some mixed feelings on the built in chisel. It worked like a dream on the first two doors. The third door must have been out of some sturdy wood because the built in chisel couldn't handle the job. I have a couple of more doors to complete so hopefully it can finish this job.

The chisel on the end is total junk. Bent on the first door and then chisels so deep into the door it busts out the wood rather than a clean cut. I had to repair 2 of the doors (see photo). Look elsewhere!

This is the best investment I have made when hanging doors.
I always struggle when it comes to the door latch part. I used router and chisels before, but this tool is the best.
Built well and easy to use, all you need to do is place it in the hole you drilled out for the latch, and smack it with the hammer. Once it leaves it's outline, just use the built in chisel attached to the top and your done.
This literally only take about two mines to do, and the latch fits perfect every time. That being said, I completed about 13 latch installs with this as we are replacing all the doors in our house.
Imposter a video to show everyone how well this works. https://youtu.be/H6zHGOOxnCY
