Can I use this tool to install a strike plate?

Asked by Jules August 1, 2020

Unfortunately Ryobi Teams answer is wrong. You can NOT use this for the strike plate. While the latch plate and strike plate are the same length, the issue is the door stop nailed to the inside of your door jamb will interfere with the top of this tool and not allow you to create the mortise for the strike plate. They could have designed the tool to allow you to do both jobs, but unfortunately, they did not.

Will this work on existing doors. Replacing older knobs, hinges etc.

An existing door would already be prepped. This tool will only mortise for the latch in the door. No hinges, strike plates.

Door isn’t catching in latch ..what is the name of the piece I need.

If the door latch isn't latching in the strike plate, then the latch and strike plate are misaligned. You need to kneel down and look closely at the center of latch in relation to the strike plate. If the perceived centers of each align, then the strike plate is setting too far back in the jamb, and the latch is failing to reach, and fall into the hole drilled for it previously. You'll need to adjust the strike plate further away from the jamb stop. If, however, the centers are off (meaning, up, or down), then you'll need to adjust the strike plate position to line up properly with the latch. Good luck!

Product met the need, did a good job but not exceptional. This device is all you need to remove a thin section of the door (where the door latch extends outward) to create space for the metal strike plate (see photo). It has 2 cutting inserts (one with rounded corners and one with more squared corners) that you affix into the green plastic block, you align this on the edge of the door and then strike the block with a hammer to drive the insert into the door's edge and create a cut-out edge that matches the shape of the metal strike plate. The you flip the device around so that the little black cutting edge (shown on the right of the image above) is stuck into the hole where the door latch will go. The cutting edge is at the proper depth for the metal strike plate. Tapping on the rounded edges of the device drives the cutting edge into the door (up or down) and shaves off a thin slice of the door, leaving a space that is the perfect shape and depth for the metal strike plate. It does exactly what it's supposed to do. The first time I used it, I had to shift my grip on the device, which moved it slightly, so I had 2 slightly different insert cut-outs, so there is a small space around the metal strike plate. Not a big deal, but it's imperfect. Mostly due to beginner's error. Carefully position the device, hold it tight, hit it right, remove the cut-out, be happy. This would be perfect if there was a way to better ensure accuracy for properly placing the cutting inserts on the door edge. Probably not worth taking a whole point off, but that was my only option.

Nice tool
Wow. I've struggled with creating a clean outline for the door latch before. With some sturdy hammer whacks on this tool, it creates the perfect outline. It has a template for rounded off latches and flip it over it has the template for squared off latches. Very nice. However, I have some mixed feelings on the built in chisel. It worked like a dream on the first two doors. The third door must have been out of some sturdy wood because the built in chisel couldn't handle the job. I have a couple of more doors to complete so hopefully it can finish this job.

The chisel on the end is total junk. Bent on the first door and then chisels so deep into the door it busts out the wood rather than a clean cut. I had to repair 2 of the doors (see photo). Look elsewhere!

This is the best investment I have made when hanging doors. I always struggle when it comes to the door latch part. I used router and chisels before, but this tool is the best. Built well and easy to use, all you need to do is place it in the hole you drilled out for the latch, and smack it with the hammer. Once it leaves it's outline, just use the built in chisel attached to the top and your done. This literally only take about two mines to do, and the latch fits perfect every time. That being said, I completed about 13 latch installs with this as we are replacing all the doors in our house. Imposter a video to show everyone how well this works. https://youtu.be/H6zHGOOxnCY

This might work for solid wood doors, but it was absolutely useless for the cheap, pressed fiber doors used in mass-construction homes. Spend the money on the better corner cutters that are out there and leave this one on the hook

It works very well, the shape of the cutter leaves a little to be desired. The long edges are not perfectly straight. You will want to get a chisel to clean up the corners if your plates are square on the corners.

Worked as advertised. I had tried to use a chisel and hammer on the first door I was changing. Do yourself a favor and get this tool. It will save a lot of time and stress and result in a much better finished product.
