I put in the battery (tested beforehand to ensure it worked). One of the leak alarm's terminals wasn't sized properly. I adjusted it to fit and tested the alarm. Even putting it under a running faucet didn't set it off. I returned alarm to the store. It was cheap garbage or I'd have tried w/another.

I'm rating it 3 stars bec I like the idea of having one of these. I have questions about the product though. Like in any other products, how do I know that it will work? Is there a test I can do? It didn't come with adhesive so I bought double sided tape separately. And batteries too. I think it should have been mentioned somewhere that I should also buy tape & batteries along with this product.

peace of mind purchase
Very simple to put in place and ready to use ... install a 9-v battery and place by any water source that might happen. Gives me great peace of mind after having to spend nearly $3,000 for the clean up of water damage from the condensate line of my furnace backing up.

Such a Simple, Useful Thing - Every Home Should Have at Least One
If I had had this Honeywell water leak alarm when I moved in to my new-to-me home, it may have saved my wood floors from a disastrous water heater leak. Now that the water heater and floors are replaced, I put this in the water heater closet, confident it will alert me to any future leaks. It's such a simple thing to get, put in place and use - simply add a battery and put in place. Peace of mind for pennies.
great concept - but volume of alert may be a little low
This is a low energy consumption device that takes a 9-volt battery and easily last over 6 months, perhaps even more than a year with a fresh 9-volt alkaline battery. I had been using a rechargeable one, and after 4 plus months, the battery appeared to have at least 75% power left. Thinking it may have not been working (I left it next to the water heater), I tested it and it did in fact work - the beeping is not as loud as a smoke detector, but if the house is quiet, I could probably hear it in the basement. If you paired this up with an internet-of-things sound detector, it would be a great combination.
There is two metal contacts on the bottom. So if water that has spilled, hits both metal contacts, it will create a circuit making the alarm go off.
After a few water leaks I decided leak detectors are needed in a few apartments I own. These beep when the battery is low which I wanted but these may not work in some areas like under the sink when storage is packed in layers deep (might cover the speaker).
I had a leak under my sink two days after I installed it and I don't have storage packed layers deep but the alarm was not as loud as I expected yet I was able to hear it. If it had items on top of it like my tenants often do it may not be audible.

good unit
Good and loud sound good size and pretty sensitive tried it in a puddle of water before putting it by my sump pump hole easy to shut off by simply drying it off.
I really like the idea of a re-usable alarm. This unit is larger than I expected. The battery compartment is accessed by unscrewing a panel on the bottom. It does not appear to have a seal so water could intrude into the battery area if the water level rose too high. The water is detected by two pins on the bottom of the unit. The water level must be at least 1/16 inch high and come in contact with both pins before the alarm will sound. The pins are on one edge of the unit so make sure you install it in a way that they will contact the water. Especially if the water might not pool but instead run off a surface and miss the pins. The instructions claim the battery should last for 24 hours of alarm. It also includes a low battery alert. The problem with the unit is the low decibel output of the alarm. I would only hear this going off if I was in the same room as the unit. In my particular case this is under the water heater which is located in the garage. So I could be in a situation where there is a leak and I don’t know because I can’t hear it.
I put this next to my washing machine as I had major water damage previously when the sewer line that the machine was hooked up to backed up and all the water pumped onto the floor (while I was away). And ever since that catastrophe, I make sure I am home when the washing machine or dishwasher are running! This alarm will notify me if any water leaks from the machine or lines. It can be used again by just wiping it off. Requires one 9V battery.
I bought 6 of these do-dads a month ago I suppose. Once I installed the batteries I checked each of them to ensure that they worked. All of them passed the test. Alarm is LOUD! I have no idea what people are saying about not being loud... Anyway, piece of mind. I am a Journeyman plumber, so water is always on my mind.

works fine, just not terribly loud
The alarm works fine - it triggers immediately if water contacts its base, and stops if you pick it up. It's just not terribly loud. I'll use it in the basement but doubt I'd hear it if I'm upstairs.
The pitch is fairly high so your ability to hear it depends on your age and degree of high-frequency hearing loss. At 63 my hearing is still pretty good but this alarm probably seems louder to a younger person.
These little pucks have saved me lots of money & time!

Great little alarm, wish it came with battery
This is a great little alarm. I installed hardwood flooring in my kitchen and am constantly afraid that the dishwasher or the sink will leak, wrecking my floors. So I put this little guy underneath, between the dishwasher and the sink just for a piece of mind. Before I put it under, I wanted to test it out - works great. It is very loud (about as loud as a smoke alarm) and it needs a little bit of water accumulation to start working. This is not a moisture meter - this is a water leak meter.
The only downside I would say is that it doesn't come with a battery - buying a spare 9V battery is something I always forget to do. But this is not their fault.
Was not in stock in the store, so had to order on-line. The on-line description should include an estimated battery life.

Works Great!
There is a section of my basement that leaks water every Spring so I picked up this alarm to place in the problem area. Before putting the alarm into service, however, I conducted a few tests on a plate of water. It definitely works! The alarm has two electrical contacts on the bottom of the device, spaced about an inch and a half apart. The water completes the circuit between these contacts and sets off the alarm. That said, the alarm does need a little bit of water depth to function. If you place it on top of a wet countertop for example, it would not go off. In my experimentation, it seems to need about 1/8" of water depth before it goes off.
In terms of sound volume, its definitely sufficient. I would say its a little quieter than a standard smoke alarm, but not by much. You can definitely hear it from going off in the basement from the main floor. I only have one story, so I couldn't tell you if you could hear it going off in the basement from a second story. According to handy little app on my phone, it seems to beep at about 100 dB, for whatever that's worth.

Not recommended
Not loud enough to hear if in basement. Battery compartment is on the bottom. Battery will get wet if water level is more than a 1/2 inch or so. Not sure if alarm will continue to sound if the unit becomes submerged. It should have been designed to float on top of water.
