Very hard to use, don't buy!
Squeeze spout hard to operate - takes an iron grip to make the fuel flow. But what is worse: No handle on the back. A full 5-gallon can is heavy, so you need a back handle (photo on right). To pour with a full Scepter can you would need 3 hands.

Hi HansW - We're sorry to hear you've had difficulty using your fuel can. After VENTING the fuel can, there are two steps to using this spout. Step 1. UNLOCK: Using your palm, press the small dark green lock tab up to unlock. Step 2: POUR: Place your fingers over the black grip and keeping the lock tab depressed and using your palm, squeeze to slide the large green pad forward to release the fuel. This video may also help: https://www.scepter.com/safety/instructional-videos/ . There is some stiffness expected when sliding the large green pad forward as that is part of the child resistant feature, however it should not require excessive force. You may find that placing the fuel can flat on the ground and actuating the spout once or twice prior to use may allow the green pad to slide easier during operation. For your convenience there is a hook on the underside of the SMARTCONTROL spout that can rest on the lip of the receiving tank, using the hook when pouring helps alleviate much of the weight. Tilt the can up from the bottom using one hand, following the instructions for the spout operation with the other hand. If you have any further questions or are still having difficulty, please reach out to our Customer Care Team at 1-855-857-3252 for assistance. Thank you, we are here to help! Scepter

    Awesome safety features
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I almost had a gas can blow up on me when I was filling it at the gas station so I can appreciate a good can when I see it. This container has amazing safety features so that type of thing does not happen to someone. Watching the videos on how to use the can beforehand was very helpful. These videos are provided on Sceptor's website. The can is very durable and good quality so I'm sure I'll be using this for years to come.

      Great for Lawn Mowers!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] We have been wanting a good scepter. My Husband and I were both pleased with this 5 gallon one. The size was perfect. This was great for emergenices in our vehicles, emergencies with a power outage and needing our genartaor. As well as great when needing to fuel up our lawn mower. This tank itself was very durable, hard plastic that you can tell was made with stunning quality. Durable as can be! Sturdy! And the perfect nossle, protecting from spills with such a well thought of design!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I had had this for a couple weeks and we like to travel a lot so we like to have spare gas just in case. I like this new one with the new spout is makes it so much easier to use and no spillage. Great features.

          Child Proof and Spill Proof!!!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is a great design for a safer jug. It pours faster due to it let's air flow while pouring. But you can control how fast you want it to come out by pushing the button more or less. It will not pour if it was to fall over which is a great design for transporting it in your car. And it is child safety to. It was simple to figure out how to operate. It has a flame mitigation device in the top of the jug that you can see when you remove the spout. It is made of great quality materials. I would highly recommend this product!!!

            Great safety features
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is great for me to keep some kerosene at my house on stand-by for when I need It. I love all the safety features on it. Small hands of my kids can't open it. Also don't have to worry about It spilling. It also feels really solid and sturdy. Basically most importantly, i feel safer with this one in my garage compared to other gas cans I have seen and had.

              Safety matters
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This can has been a wonderful gas can to use. I needed To get gas for cutting my grass. I sent My husband up to fill up the gas can. It was very easy to fill up and the best part is that it’s super safe. The part on the inside is to keep it from catching fire. I also Like the way that it holds five gallons. My other cans are super small and don’t hold that much gas. This one holds enough gas for this time I’m cutting grass and the next two times. The color of the van is nice also. It’s a real nice blue can. Also the back where you put the gas in the car is easy to use. It’s a small switch on the back. That way your gas doesn’t leak out.

Great Container But Hard To Pour
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This 5 Gallon Container is a well made and very sturdy.container. It holds up to 5 gallons of Gas or Kerosene and it has a Big wide handle that makes it really easy to hold while pouring the liquid. It has a Scepter that is really hard to use. I could not figure out how to remove it in order to fill the can and how to use it to pour the gas out of the container. It was really hard to use and to figure out how it worked even with the instructions that came with it. I think that if this container had a better option of how to use and pour the liquid from the container it would be perfect. Besides the pouring problem I think the Container itself is great and I would buy it again if it had a better pouring option.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Its not as complicated as might seem to some. It is a simply push with your palm and pour. Its great . We have less dripping and zero spills. Its handy to use even with my arthritic hands. We are glad we chose this one.

Only buy it if you have no other options
This thing is a workout just to get any in the heater. For me, kero spills from different areas on the cap (even the lever that you press), then it goes all over the floor and on your skin. Not safe at all. The company could do better to make a childproof container that is not a risk as well as adult proof. I get rashes if it gets on my skin as in really bad ones and I have a hard time dispensing any without spills. Spills are not safe for people of all ages or pets as they can walk through it.

This thing is annoying on many levels. There's a plastic drawer in the neck that doesn't let you fill it without splashing and prevents the fill nozzle from fitting in it. There's a stupid safety spill lever that requires you to hold it down while you pour it. Like anyonene can hold 5 gallons of k-1 with one hand for 5 minutes. Do not buy this over priced garbage!

Similar to medication packaging, gas/diesel cans must also adhere to strict child resistance packaging laws. All fuel containers sold in the United States must come equipped with a child-safety lock and adhere to environmental regulations (EPA). This product should only be used with the spout it came with at the time of purchase. Every automobile/equipment is different, so it is not a one size fits all situation. The SMARTCONTROL gas can, is designed to be used with your palm. Step 1: Vent the fuel can by slowly unscrewing the cap, allow all the pressure to escape. Once vented re-tighten cap. You may find that placing the fuel can flat on the ground and actuating the spout once or twice prior to use may allow the green pad to slide easier during operation. Step 2: Flip up dark lever on back of spout with your palm. Step 3: With the dark green lever still flipped up, push the entire light green pad forward. It will be stiff as that is part of the child resistant feature. Again, you may find that placing the fuel can flat on the ground and actuating the spout once or twice prior to use may allow the green pad to slide easier during operation. Step 4: Tilt can and pour. This can has a flow rate of 3+ gallons per minute when actuated fully. The “screen” you see in the neck of the fuel can is actually a safety device called a flame mitigation device (FMD). Its inclusion in fuel containers is part of a 2020 U.S. law to improve overall safety. It does not make it safe to mix Gas and Fire, which remains extremely dangerous, but helps to protect the consumer against situations of potential misuse. Do not ever remove or modify the FMD. We understand that filling the containers now requires the user to learn to rest the pump in the center of the FMD, on the steps, to fill at full speed. The spout has a channel for venting when pouring. You can also choose simply to take your time filling the container. We have posted both fill and pour instructions online at https://www.scepter.com/safety/instructional-videos/ which should help. We are here to help! Scepter

As a container it works great - the use of the difficult to operate gas can ‘safety type’ dispenser for a kerosene can is a bit of an overkill - it’s not a gasoline container with excessive flammable vapor issues.

This review was NOT collected as part of a promo - I'm a REAL CUSTOMER. If you're like me, and are looking for a nice can to (cleanly and easily) fill your kerosene heater with - don't buy this one! You're better off using your funnel, syphon, or plain old gas can. Why? 1) The childproofing makes this adult proof, 2) it leaks from 2 places, 3) it's super difficult to use.

If you're planning to buy this can to use with a hand pump to refuel your kerosene space heater, forget it. The strainer inside the opening will not allow the stem of the pump to be inserted into the can. One of the stupidest designs I've seen in a long time. It also requires hand control at the nozzle, while you're also trying to hold the can with both hands! If I can remove the strainer then I may not have entirely wasted the money that I spent on it.

With all the safety features, this can is almost impossible to use. When you finally get it to open, there is another safety feature which prevents you from using a siphon pump to transfer the kerosene into the tank. I much prefer the old school cans that are so simple to use

Step 2: Flip up dark lever on back of spout with your palm. Step 3: With the dark green lever still flipped up, push the entire light green pad forward. It will be stiff as that is part of the child resistant feature. You may find that placing the fuel can flat on the ground and actuating the spout once or twice prior to use may allow the green pad to slide easier during operation. Step 4: Tilt can and pour. The spout has a channel for venting when pouring. You can also choose simply to take your time filling the container. We have posted both fill and pour instructions online at https://www.scepter.com/safety/instructional-videos/ which should help. Difficult to fill and pour
There's a mesh safety filter on the inside of this thing that makes it exceedingly difficult to fill without the pump shutting off or spraying kerosene on the outside. Pouring is equally as difficult. You need to awkwardly engage the spout with one hand while holding 40 lbs of fuel in the other. The spout is also too wide to fit into heater, so you need to balance the funnel, while holding the can, and engaging the safety valve. And you can't even siphon because of the safety mesh.

Hi KeroseneUser - We apologize for your experience. Customer satisfaction is very important to Scepter. Similar to medication packaging, gas/diesel/kero cans must also adhere to strict child resistance packaging laws. All fuel containers sold in the United States must come equipped with a child-safety lock and adhere to environmental regulations (EPA). This product should only be used with the spout it came with at the time of purchase. This can is designed to be used with your palm. Difficult to use, leaking first use
Instructions on can are horrible, small. Grateful for YouTube. Filled it up last night, cap is tight, looked straight, now leaking from rim when I try to pour. Trying to get cap off - can't. Never had this problem in years of kerosene use. Making contraptions to figure out how to manage this container, kerosene heater container and use a hand to push on the spout. This might work for three-handed people. I hate this product. Horrible for kerosene heater cartridge refill use.
