The reason for this is the parts that go on the stem are not big enough for an old gas stove.

These were the only knobs we could find to replace the original plastic knobs with peeling foil. ...
These were the only knobs we could find to replace the original plastic knobs with peeling foil. These knobs are metal. Sometimes they come off the stove and have to be put back on again. Otherwise we would have had to buy a new stove, but these knobs saved us from that.

The "yes" recommendation for this product is a very qualified yes, only because replacement knobs...
The "yes" recommendation for this product is a very qualified yes, only because replacement knobs are almost impossible to find. The knobs look good but, in my experience, none of the 6 adapter inserts fit the valve stems for my appliance (it was necessary for me to carefully modify one of the inserts to fit properly). Moreover, the inserts are designed in a way that causes the knobs to stand off from the face of the appliance by about 3/8 in. To rectify that problem it was necessary to remove a portion of the insert. So, unless you're very lucky, you'd have to go to a lot of trouble to adapt these knobs to fit.

Beautiful kit, which unfortunately didn't work on my Tappan cooktop. The hollow core out of the knobs didn't allow the shaft of the switch to press downward which is required to turn my unit.
