There were other products that we found before purchasing these that had a core of manufactured wood and only a thin veneer of oak. These were solid oak through and through.

These stair treads are beautiful! The quality is great. They come pre-sanded, so I just had to run a sanding block over them a few times before finishing them. I did not stain them; I only used polyurethane on them, as the red oak color is beautiful! Also, as I was applying the poly, I could see streaks of the red oak come out. Not one stair tread was damaged either. They were packed four (4) to a box and very well packaged!

Replaced carpeted stairs and wood spindles with these treads, new painted risers and wrought iron balusters. Routed half round top and bottom on the exposed tread side.

I bought 12 of these treads. Overall, I was happy with the treads. The price was great. All of the treads has a side that had obviously fewer flaws and a good side. A couple of them were slightly warped, but not bad enough to worry about. A couple of the others had some minor dings. However, considering the price I am quite happy with these treads. I have stained them and tomorrow I am going to install them.

Turned my ugly staircase to a master piece. Took the stained nicely.
1- I used the wood conditioner.
2- Stained 2 coats of special walnut
3- 3 coats of poly
This is not a week end project. But worth the effort.

I bought two of these Red Oak pieces to be glued to the top of two brick steps leading into my kitchen from the garage. Before installation, each of the two steps had been only 7 inches high and the top step was 10 inches high. My mother-in-law had stumbled going into my home and it had taken months for her leg to heal. By buying these 1 inch thick pieces of red oak and placing on the bottom two steps, made them each 8 inches high. I applied stain and sealant to the steps and they look beautiful. My wife is very satisfied with the feel and the look.
Thank you a ton, Home Depot!

Very Nice
I had carpeted stairs and chose these to replace them. We are very pleased with the way they turned out. I ordered 15 treads, and all but one could have been used on either side.
Cut the noses off the old stairs, cut the treads to size, then applied 3 coats of Minwax polyurethane.Used 1/4 inch birch plywood for the risers. 3 coats of paint on the risers. Lots of Locktite PL premium 3x construction adhesive and a few finish nails, then caulk and putty.
They match our floors perfectly.
As others have noted, you need a stair template to get the proper angles. I googled a dyi template and made one from scraps that were laying around. It worked very well.
Total cost of materials, paint, etc. , was approximately $500.00 for 15 stairs.

Nice grain, easy to stain
I bought 13 of these and they were all perfect on one side. There was one that might have been usable on either side with a little sanding. My old treads were 41 inch, so these were perfect size. I also bought the Stairtek plastic tread template. This made the measuring and cutting much easier. Very satisfied with these treads, a difference between day and night from my old carpeted staircase. And I had them shipped free to my local HD and picked up at my convenience.

This product has some problems!
This product is made of up to 7 pieces of glued up strips of wood...beware. If you are looking for a clear select product this not!!! for you. It is made of a number 1 red oak that has tons of color variation in the piece and dark mineral(black) is the normal. Also the bottom has glue and wood voids that do not allow you to leave this exposed. On one of ours it went all the way to the edge that you could not finish the end due to wood voids. This is a rustic wood product and the description should be accurate.

Builder grade wood that should be listed as finish/stain grade
I ordered 21 of these treads. I got two extra in case there were some that had really bad spots on them on both sides. Turns out, even though there were some that had bad sides, not one board was unusable on both sides. Also, I truly expected to have to sand these a lot and to throw away a couple due to knots and marks, but, they are all perfect in my opinion. There are some knots and marks here and there but none that were that bad and the finish was already sanded more than enough for me to the point that I didn't have to sand any of them. I would suggest you buy one or two extras just in case you get a bad one, but all in all, these were much better quality than I expected and the only thing I had to do to them after installing them is to polyeurathane them which I have yet to do but they are amazing. Very solid, and great look, to the point of which I decided not to stain them and leave the wood grain showing. Also, the price on these were the best I could find anywhere for decent red oak, and that's not all, home depot literally delivered all of them to my door for FREE!!! Thanks home depot, you are awesome.

The product looks gorgeous!
We wanted to redo our basement stairs and my husband and I were looking for stainable treads in oak. We found these on line for a cheaper price than in the stores. I was able to stain and varnish them and they turned out beautiful. We did have to cut them down a bit but there were no other issues. The treads are solid and sturdy and well worth the price. We are very satisfied with the product.

Why spend more, these treds are great quality.
Since you have to sand and stain them anyway, why would anybody pay twice as much for "1st quality". These treds are very very nice, after proper prep ther is no way you could have a better outcome. The one thing I will say is get a couple more than you need, I needed 12 and bought 14 just to have more grain patterns to choose from (and I'm glad I did), I returned the 2 that I did not choose at my local store. I pulled my old treds off, painted my risers and installed my new stained and finished treds and my finished project is way nicer than I imagined, what a great bang for your buck upgrade.

Great value!! Much better than ALL competitors!
I read the reviews and checked prices at other stores and websites (including Lowes). This was the best deal of all. I ordered 15 treads to make certain I had enough without defects to use (based upon the other reviews that indicated some treads were not usable on EITHER side). There were a couple that could be used either side, but the remainder had significant flaws on one side - that could not be corrected by sanding. However...the "good" sides, with little sanding, came out perfect! I could use ALL the treads delivered. These are classed as "builder grade", but I'd say, if you only need one side (as in most applications), buy this product and save a LOT of $$$$. I applied construction adhesive to bond the treads to the rough-cut treads I found under my existing carpet. (I was replacing a carpeted stairway with red oak.) Using a rubber mallet, I seated the treads and they have bonded permanently to the stair framework.

Beautiful grain and finished nicely in a dark walnut stain
Very happy with the quality. Installed 14 of these treads in my home. a Light sanding with 220 and took the stain nice and even. I finished with a satin poly to match the walnut laminate flooring and it looks amazing!

Good quality, great value, timely arrival
Of the ten treads I received, only one had very minor worm holes (1mm size and only a few, not a problem). A quick, light sanding with 100 grit, followed by three coats of urethane (sanding with 220 grit in between) created "perfect" oak stair treads.
