This review is in combination with my Bonsai Supply Lava Rock Black review describing removing the existing soil and cleaning my Bonsai still in its pot, top to bottom by spritzing with mild soapy water and finishing with clean water. I had to remove the soil because it arrived with bugs. After removing all the soil I used this Bonsai soil mix and finished it off with the black lava rock. My bonsai was quite healthy despite the bugs, but now it can co-exist with my other Bonsai plants!😊

This is THE Bonsai Soil to get!
This soil is world class! I bought this for 2 beginner class Ficus Benjamina’s I’ve had for 3 years and repotted about a week prior… but I used peatmoss and perilite and within days, one plant started had leaves turning yellow and brown and dropping several a day. I realized the soil was staying too wet and ordered this soil that’s been on my wishlist immediately. Received fast in 4 days and was able to repot as soon as the soil arrived last Friday afternoon… and SAVED my dying Ficus! I was down to 5 leaves and took off 2 more that had turned color a little too much, so 3 good ones almost a week later. I did watch The Bonsai Supply video where they had to revive 2 Ficus and took all leaves off, so I may do that to the one tree, but can see it rebudding already, so gonna give it a week or two. Water drains EXTREMELY well! I bought the giant bag for only 2 trees… needless to say, I’m gonna need more trees! Looking forward to your next YouTube tree auction. Thanks for making this great peoduct so easily available and mixed to perfection. Also love your YT content. Thanks!!!

Excellent mix
I got this Bonsai Soil about 1 1/2 weeks ago. I have used it for several succulents and orchids. They are doing great in it! It drains very well while holding enough water to prevent drying out. The bonsai mix is composed of pumice, lava, clay, and tiny pieces of pine bark. Bonsai soil provides 70 different trace minerals to your plants. It's great for plants that require air and don't like to be moist as garden soil would do. I would recommend this.
This is a soil mix specifically made for bonsai plants to promote optimum growth and health. The soil consists of four main ingredients: Pumice, Lava, Calcined Clay and Pine Bark Fines. These core ingredients help with drainage, preventing root rot and with the watering process. The soil has a very light feel to it and you can easily see how it will not compact if overwatering occurs. All the aggregates are made in the USA. Highly recommend for your bonsai tree!
I'm just getting started with the art of bonsai and this soil mix looks pretty cool. Along with providing adequate draining to prevent root rot, it also has elements that would absorb nutrients to release slowly back to my plant. I'm currently using this soil mix to train a little peach seedling to be a bonsai. I started with a peach pit and now have a little seedling. Only time will tell if this will work out, but I am very hopeful. This soil mix would provide a good start. It also looks cool.
This is a fast draining coarse blend mixture designed for Bonsai trees. Because of the great drainage, it is also a wonderful medium to plant succulents into to lessen the possibility that the roots will rot.
This mixture has nutrients in it that gets absorbed into your plants. It is ready to use as is or can be mixed with other soil or medium. Comes in an environmentally friendly bag.
This is a great product
I am writing this review based upon the opinion of my wife. She tells me she likes the soil mix. It is very much similar to what she would custom mix herself for her bonsai plants and some other plants she uses this type of soil. So far, she says the soil seems to be a good mix for moisture retention. She has yet to transplant a plant out of this soil into another container, so she cannot vouch for the root growth. But she expects it to work very well.
The Bonsai Supply Soil mix is a great mixture for your bonsai!
I have always wanted a bonsai tree; they are rugged looking and with the right care they can tell a great story.
Help your bonsai tree grow healthy and strong with the right Bonsai soil mix. No more overwatering. This soil mixture can be used for all bonsai species, and all other container grown plants. This mix does not need to be combined with anything else. It is ready to use. This bonsai soil mix contains 4 ingredients you can pronounce: Pumice, Lava, Calcined Clay, and Pine Bark Fines.
Optimal blend for perfect results our bonsai plant mix is specifically created to provide the roots with optimal drainage, ph balance, water retention and nutrient uptake and aeration (which they love), in short: it gets you an ideal balance of air and moisture while retaining nutrients.
Ideal mix of nature perfectly blended for all types of bonsai and other plants, this mix can be used for any container grown plant including herbs, cactus, succulents and so much more, all aggregates are sourced in the USA.
Durable sealed packaging resealable Ziplock standup pouch made from recycled material
This Bonsai Supply soil mixture is primarily made to develop healthy and strong bonsai trees but it can be also used as a decorative topping for your indoor or outdoor potted plant specimens. This soil mix contains pumice minerals for developing root systems, lava for drai ingredients, calcified clay to hold in water and pine bark to absorb nutrients and weed prevention.
About 3 years ago I decided I wanted a Bonsai type plan in my kitchen window. I consulted my local nursery and they recommended an Adenium (aka. Desert Rose). They recommended I transplant the plant into a Orchid pot, I took this to also mean using Orchid soil. Well for the last three years the plant would sprout some new leaves and they'd pretty promptly fall off (but regrow). I'd never been able to get it to flower or for the primary plant to get any larger. I finally took them some pictures to my nursery, trying to blame the problem on Covid-19. Well they were not buying that, but they were surprised I'd not managed to kill it. They were pretty sure that any instruction that they would have given me would have included use a course sandy soil, like a Bonsai mix. They were probably right, I heard Orchid pot and thought pot/soil. They told me that the Adenium is really a desert plant. And as long as the primary plant/stalk was still firm the plant would likely survive and bloom with flowers in a couple of years. But be patient, maybe 1/2 cup of water per month in the winter, and 1/2 cup every other week in the summer. They explained that Bonsai soil allows most of the water to drain through the soil. Orchid soil retains the water and remains moist, exactly the opposite of what my slow growing Adenium needs. Orchids live in rain forests, Adenium is from the deserts of Egypt.
I thought I could hear them laughing at me as I departed. But lesson learned the right soil is important especially for certain types of plants that won't tolerate the damp environment (will just cause the roots to rot). Well the student has learned that porous nature of Bonsai Soil is very important, and pay closer attention to what your told. This soil is exactly what my Adenium needed.
The Bonsai Supply Bonsai Soil Mix 2 Qt. Fast Draining - Coarse Blend For All Bonsai Varieties.
Plants need water to survive, but too much water can be damaging to a variety of decorative house plants. They also require a balanced level of nutrients, both vitamins and minerals. The Bonsai Supply Bonsai Soil Mix gives your plants a soil that prevents overwatering, while providing the nutrients needed for strong plants. The soil can be used directly from the bag- no additional soils are needed. Although the soil is called “Bonsai”, it can be used for any container plants. I use it for my orchids, which cannot tolerate over-watering. Two thumbs up for this quality soil blend.
The Bonsai soil has excellent drainage.
The Bonsai soil contains vitamins and minerals.
When we pour water into the pot the water quickly flows to the bottom of the pot and the plant stays moist but does not drown in water.
In our case we put Lava Rock in the Bottom ¼ of the Pot and Bonsai soil mixture in the top ¾ of the pot.
Now we can easily water the plant without over watering it as we can easily see how much water collects in the dish at the base of each pot.
Babar, my ponytail palm hadn't been happy since I bought it several months ago which was visible because the leaf tips were browning and the trunk didn't look healthy. The problem was the soil of, course, a common issue. I re-potted Babar with bonsai mix which drains better while still retaining some moisture and plenty of oxygen to the roots. Babar's a lot happier now (and so am I).
Bonsai Supply Soil Mix is by far the best one out on the market for Bonsai plants. It provides your plant with maximum drainage to avoid root rot. I mix it in with my plants regular potting soil to help with drainage. I also put a layer on the top of the soil to dress it up, and to deter my cats from digging in my plants. In this mix there is Pumice, Calcined Clay, Lava and Pine Bark Fines.
I have one Bonsai plant that I have had about 8 years now. I have always kept it on a plant shelf on my lanai where it gets medium sunshine. In the past before moving to Florida I have had others but unfortunately, they did not survive. Recently had to move the plant shelf when my house was painted and looked over this Bonsai that other than watering have really not done much with since I re-potted and trimmed the roots about 3 years ago. So, I decided to get some new soil and replace the old soil with The Bonsai Supply Bonsai Soil Mix. The ingredients which I am sure were come up with by Bonsai experts and I like that it was all sourced from the USA! I have ordered some Bonsai plant food and am going to start paying more attention to it!
This Bonsai Supply Bonsai Soil Mix in a 2 Qt. bag, has a Fast Draining - Coarse Blend For All Bonsai Varieties. This soil helps your bonsai tree grow healthy and strong with the right Bonsai soil mix. The soil does not pack light regular soils and allows for fast draining and allows air to penetrate the soil. It is lightweight and I would recommend this to avid Bonsai growers.
I know this product is sold primarily as the main soil for Bonsai plants but it has elements in it that make it so much more versatile than that. Yes, it has everything you need in a soil for a Bonsai plant but some of those same elements make it invaluable for those persnickety plants that just seem to never be happy. It keeps your plants from getting water logged, yet holds moisture. It also obtains valuable minerals that will feed your plants. I have used it in a flowering vine that has been giving me trouble and it has made an amazing difference. Love it f!
One of my gardening goals is to find new outdoor uses for indoor products. These BONSAI SUPPLY multicolor rocks have small pieces of pine bark and clay in the mix that not only add an attractive bit of style around the large planters in our backyard garden, they also provide a type of mini-dam to hold back water from splashing lawn dirt onto our concrete patio floor when it rains.
This product is an incredibly versatile soil. It would work for bonsai, herbs
air plants (to make an interesting display) and orchids . You might have too amend this to make it work for the orchids.
Another plus for this product and their other products is that they are sourced and processed in the good old USA !
Don't be afraid to use your imagination !
The Bonsai Supply Bonsai Soil Mix 2 Qt. Fast Draining - Coarse Blend For All Bonsai Varieties. I got this mixture for my succulents and found that it is a very good mixture to provide drainage and organic matter nourishment. There are 4 major ingredients in the mixture. Pumice is loaded with minerals that help develop a healthy root system. Lava is excellent for drainage to help keep the moisture levels low and a happy succulent. Calcined clay holds moisture so the plant will not dry out. Last is pine bark fines that absorb nutrients and slowly releases them back as needed while preventing weed growth. All ingredients are sourced in the US.
This mix for Bonsai growing is *very* course. Because of this it will facilitate drainage and help prevent root rot or mold growth. I've lost several trees over the years to this using plain gravel or less course soil mixes. I love that this is sourced in the United States and that they are using recycled packaging. That's thoughtful. This small bag should last a good long time and could be used in regular house plants, too. Win/Win
I used to have a Bondai tree and I think it died from root rot. I ordered a new tree and the Bonsai Supply Bonsai Soil Mix. This soil mix says it’s fast draining so to prevent root rot. It has other features like 70 different traces of minerals for strong roots. The pine bark in it helps with weed prevention. My Bonsai supply soil mix came today but my Bonsai Tree won’t be here until next month. I can hardly wait to get it planted.

I have used severas types of different bonsai soils, thus one by far is top notch. I reported two of my Bonsai trees when I got the soil, and they are both thriving.

The Bonsai Supply Soil Mix has the perfect blend of ingredients for our delicate Bonsai tree! The pumice is packed with vital minerals! The lava allows for excellent drainage and the clay keeps the Bonsai hydrated! The pine bark looks great in the pot! I have had the Soil Mix for a week, so I will monitor how it effects the growth of our Bonsai! It is nice to have such a specific product!

This is a very cool product. Not only does it look great with our little bonsai tree (artificial, but whatever), I also used it mixed with potting soil to plant succulents. I think it will really help with the drainage as it has so much drainage material in it. I also really like that all the materials are sourced in the United States. Buy American is always the best.

This is great stuff for planting dwarf trees or bonsai trees. The Aggregates in this mixed bag have a variety of minerals for the plants. This mix is great for draining excess water and also holding some moisture in the soil as well. If you are looking to learn how to use this product, or how to plant and care for your plants while using this product you will have to find out elsewhere. These packages do not come with any instructions.

I have had no experience with the Bonsai tree, (or bush?), but this potting mix comes highly recommended.
It comes in a re-sealable [ziplock type] bag, and the potting mix is actuaally dry, not moist like most potting soil.
It consists of fairly course granulations of soil, minerals, and stuff I have no idea what it does, but the paxkage says it is not only useful for Bonsai.
I have a cool pot picked out, but I am still waiting for the Bonsai I ordered o arrive.

This is a mix of pumice, lava, calcined clay and pine bark fines, which are aggregates that are responsible for aeration, water drainage, water uptake, acidity, and nutrient uptake. I do wish that the ratio was provided (but perhaps this is a trade secret..lol) because I will be using it for my succulents and also for my orchids. I wish I could keep a bonsai alive, but have failed in the past.

I have a few indoor plants that needed a little sprucing up after being potted for a few years. I sprinkled this fast draining Bonsai Soil Mix over the existing potting soil of my Zz plant and watered it in. My Zz plant seems to like it, and the multi colored mix adds some contrast to the base of the plant that was previously bare. Although. Arketed for Bonsais, it works well for most other indoor plants too
