A little difficult to work with, but you could get good results if applied properly. Ultimately, I wouldn't recommend it because of the look. It produces an amber, glossy finish, compared to water-based Varathane satin polyurethane. Pros: - Appears to be durable and scratch-resistant - Self-levels nicely - Absorption/bubbles were not too bad on 60-year-old spruce Cons: - At full strength, took 9 days to sufficiently dry before if could be scuffed and covered with a second coat, in a controlled environment of 70-75° and 45-55% humidity. I applied subsequent coats diluted with mineral spirits and results were better. The picture I attached is on day 9 after the first coat. - Too glossy. I had to overlay with a different satin product as the final coat. - The amber color is quite noticeable. I applied a golden oak stain, whose look was significantly altered by the varnish. It may work better with darker stains. - Difficult to apply undiluted. I normally use good quality foam brushes with good results. With this polyurethane I ended up with some brush marks. I think it could have been avoided with a better bristle brush.

It's the first time I used polyurethane and was initially happy with the results. I like the easy use of this product and used it on a floor made out of reclaimed wood, for a play area for my son. So no way of really messing up the project. However, I think the product is semi-glossy, not satin. I would have given a 5 star rating if the product was a true satin.

The floor looks more shiny and reflex’s light better because the coat is oil base. Let the floor dry for several hours before applying a 2nd coat.

Purchased Satin.. looks like high gloss
I had a gallon can of Varathane semi gloss leftover, but for my remodel project, I wanted a less shiny finish, so I made a special trip to homedepot to buy a gallon of satin. I sprayed it onto both sides of 8 doors and 3 window frames, which had taken me 2 weeks to install and tediously stain and prepare. Not only does the finish with this product look like high gloss, it also looks like my woodwork is made out of cheap plastic! (See photo). Not only that, 2 out of 8 doors have a very even sheen (including the 1 in the photo), while all the rest each have several areas which are dull and rough. I now have to sand all this crap off and start over, which set me back over 2 weeks on my schedule.I'm NOT pleased. Will never buy varathane polyurethane again, nor do I recommend it to Anyone else.

Let's talk about this, Johan! Rust-Oleum Varathane Oil-Based Ultimate Polyurethane is intended to be applied with a good quality natural bristle brush or applicator. We do not recommend spraying this product. To ensure a consistent sheen, you want to ensure that you are stirring the container before each use and often during your application.

I have used this when refinishing two dining room tables and a coffee table. All three came out beautiful. Recently I used it on my new work bench. I sprayed the polyurethane on with my air sprayer and it came out perfectly. I have been very happy with this product as well as Varathane stain.

I undertook a project, painting Formica cabinets. Over a week of work, sanding, priming and painting. Then for added durability I read you should polyurethane for a final hard finish. BIG MISTAKE. My hard effort to get a fine white painted finish was ruined. My white kitchen cabinets are now all yellow. And it's all because "CLEAR" satin is really yellow.

Thank you for reaching out regarding your experience with the Rust-Oleum Varathane Ultimate Oil-Based Polyurethane. Common attributes of an oil-based polyurethane are that they are amber in color. If you're looking for a non-ambering polyurethane, we would recommend the Varathane Ultimate Water-Based Polyurethane. It's recommended that you apply 4 coats for optimal performance. We would like a chance to make this right with you if you'd like to call us to discuss your application further, we can be reached at (800)901-0411. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Varathane-1-qt-Clear-Satin-Water-Based-Interior-Polyurethane-200241H/100169146 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 1 Rustoleum

I purchased the semi-gloss wanting just a little shine on the antique I am restoring. I stirred the can before and during to make sure there was not settling. I think the can is mislabeled or something. I ended up with a high gloss finish. Now I have to re-sand everything and hopefully the satin will give me the finish I am looking for. I wish I would've gone somewhere else and got the brand I am familiar with.

We think we know what may be happening. The Rust-Oleum Varathane Ultimate Polyurethane Oil-Based Polyurethane is made with flattening agents that will settle at the bottom of the can. For this reason, mixing is incredibly important and this would also create the finish you are describing. You may be able to see some areas that are shiner than others due to this. We recommend that you lightly scuff sand with a 180 or 220 grit sandpaper to abrade the surface and make sure it's clean before reapplication of the product. Before doing so, make sure to mix it well to avoid any other concerns. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 1 Rustoleum

Used as finishing 3rd coat over 2 coats of high traffic finish. It was superior shine at a 25% savings in cost. I recommend as a great way to go. In the photo please see the shine of the window reflection on the upper left. No sanding ultra shiny beautiful.

I have a lot of experience with using Polyurethane and needed to finish some oak shelving that I made. (as an aside, once I used a water based poly and would never do that again) I bought the Varathane oil satin at Home Depot since they no longer carry Minwax poly. Of course this is all about money and obviously Varathane gave Home Depot a better deal. Fine with me up until I used this product. It is more like a gel than a liquid and required extra effort to spread. It went on with difficulty and did not dry fast as advertised. I returned it and went to the local hardware store to buy Minwax oil satin. There was no need to remove the coat of Varathane, Just let it dry, light sand and go over it with the Minwax product. I can't imagine that anyone with experience with Minwax would ever use the Varathane product.

Thank you for your feedback! For the best results, we recommend applying Rust-Oleum Varathane Oil-Based Ultimate Polyurethane with a good-quality natural bristle brush. You also want to be usre you are applying only when air (ambient) temperature is between 55-90°F (13- 32°C) and relative humidity is below 85% in an area with proper ventilation. This will help with drying and curing of the coating.

This product was recommended as a sealer for tongue-in-groove wood we are putting on a ceiling. We were very careful to follow the instructions exactly—stir, don't shake. Luckily, we only did a few pieces of wood at first. The white pine turned yellow and shiny—not the look we were going for.

Hmm, that's very odd to hear regarding the Rust-Oleum Varathane Oil-Based Polyurethane. Generally, an oil-based finish will have a slight amber in color but it may be from the type of wood that it was applied to. Let's talk a little more to see if we can help you further. If you have the can handy, please have that available. We can be reached at (800) 901-0411. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 1 Rustoleum

It goes on great with a standard 1.50 brush. No need for the 15.00 brush. Vertical applications are no problem. The Varathane self levels on flat surfaces and vertical surfaces. it lays down nice. The Semi Gloss has just enough gloss in it where it wont reflect to much contrast or light. I stained my vanity with light oak then went over it with this with two coats. 3 coats on the inside bottom. This will be dried in about 5 hours and fully dry overnight. sand with 400 grit between coats. You can coat your entire project with 3 coats thats no problem.
