No the greater product , takes to much time to dry

Would have gave a 5 star, great product. But received one can that was sooo damaged it was mission impossible too open. When I did get it opened it was impossible too reseal an wasted half my gallon. Could have been shipping company fault. But non the less, the stuff is expensive an half of a gallon got wasted.

Varathane's Clear Gloss Spar Urethane provides a tough, UV-resistant finish that looks about like other SPAR finishes, but with a golden color tint. Out of the can, the urethane is thick and looks a dingy tan, but once it dries it provides a nice warm tone to the wood (see photos). Being so thick, it requires reasonable care and a good brush during application, and I found I couldn't get a completely flat or blemish-free finish, but I didn't expect to with an exterior-grade Spar urethane. The product did not dry nearly as fast as the advertised “dries to the tough in as little as two hours”, so I waited over 24 hours between coats, lightly sanding in between each. It took the recommended 3 coats to get a uniformly glossy finish, and although the can indicates coverage up to 150 sq-ft/qt, I suspect it won't get that much at 3 coats. The finish seems tough, but it will take a few months in the Texas sun to verify the quality of the UV- protectors. So far it's a good product and a fair value, but I'm not so sure of the “fast drying” claim.

After applying to my replacement knotty pine siding on my house I read the label, okay, my fault, guys don't follow instructions well. The label says not intended for siding or something like that. Ooops. Additionally, after reading up on mildew information on the web, it says some varnish formulations today actually encourage mildew growth. Nice. Fortunately from my years of former professional painting I did mix in an after market mildewcide prior to application. We'll see how that works. Probably negated any implied suitability for purpose but I know that doing nothing didn't work either. So from the homeowners perspective, the EPA has taken materials out of products that actually perform, so now the result is siding that should have lasted 30 years or more looks bad in 5 years. Thus necessitating the replacement. I'd say this is a little counterproductive from an environmental standpoint. The sad thing is, there aren't many options today and no common sense. Unfortunately, it doesn't stop there either. Many products that used to work with older formulations, like resilient flooring adhesives, now often fail immediately or soon after installation so that certainly helped the environment didn't it? (Ask any flooring contractor) So the review/rating I have shared reflects more on what industry has been forced to do, rather than the product itself in its present formulation. It applied fine and leveled out well. Those are things that are somewhat important but longevity is what really matters and that I won't know for years. Given no other real options, I would say it is the best out there for the price. How's that for a treatise..........

Best product that I've used in recent years on my wooden pergola. Oil-based is best.

Really good product

This left an excellent smooth finish on the wood. Three coats let’s see how it holds up to the Southern California sun.

Excellent cgoverage and very little air bubbles and faster dryer times.

Works as promised, drying time seemed long for one used to using water based paints.

This Spar varnish is just the right size! I needed to refinish an outdoor table top and I did not need a whole gallon of Spar Varnish to complete the job. This quart size was just what I needed. After sanding the table top, I applied the varnish and the quart size finished the job with just a little bit to dispose of. And this has two quart containers, so it allows you the flexibility that a whole gallon does not. It went on smoothly with a brush and look stunning. A great buy for small-sized projects!

I applied 1 to 2 coats in some weathered areas. I was very pleased with the final appearance. It appears that it will wear very similar to the spar varnish that I have used in other areas. I will choose this product for my future needs. It met all my expectations.

Smooth application and finish. Hopefully it holds up under the High desert sun.

refinishing a oak bench, the product went on easily with a smooth finish. The spar urethane took longer to dry than stated,( higher humidity) but dried to a nice hard finish that should last years.

I used this product on my outside redwood fence and it transformed it from drab to beautiful, plus it stops the fading process that is normally seen on redwood outside.
