Let's talk through this! When using Rust-Oleum Watco Tung Oil, make sure to thoroughly mix the product before use to ensure any settled pigment is dispersed and to apply only when the air and surface temperatures are above 50°F and below 95°F. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5 Rustoleum

Tung Oil without the Tung
According to Watco's MSDS, there isn't a drop of Tung oil in this product. How can this be. Apparently true for many of the Tung oil brands on the market. So far the Milk Paint brand is all I can find that is truly made of Tung Oil.

I purchased this item, brought it home, and could not get the lid off. I worked on it for over an hour. I returned the item, and at the return desk, 2 employees and myself, tried an additional 3 containers. NONE of them would open. Maybe the design needs to be redesigned.....

Something is amiss here! Our Watco Tung Oil does utilize a child safety cap, however, it should be easily opened by pressing down firmly on the lid while unscrewing. Please give us a call at 800-901-0411, we want to try to make things right! - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2 Rustoleum

Thank you for reaching out. Rust-Oleum Watco Tung Oil is a penetrating product and its ability to penetrate into the surface is dependent on the porosity. If the wood is not porous enough, the product will not be able to fully soak into the substrate. To correct the application, remove the excess material with mineral spirits. Then, sand with 220 grit sandpaper to open the pores of the wood. After the pores are open and the dust is cleaned, reapply the Tung Oil. Please do not hesitate to reach out to our Product Support Team at (800) 901-0411 with any questions or concerns - we are here to help! - Rust-Oleum Product Support 4 Rustoleum

Something is amiss here, Bryant! Our Watco Tung Oil Finish is designed for use directly to bare wood surfaces; it should not be applied over a previously finished or coated surface. The solvents contained in the Tung Oil may have caused a wrinkling or cracking reaction with the previous finish. If this occurs, we recommend sanding the surface smooth, then waiting a minimum of 24 hours before reapplying the Tung Oil to the surface. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2 Rustoleum

I didn't get a case of four, I got one can. Maybe that was why it was so expensive. The price is not marked on many items in the store. I hope the results are good when I use the product. Another rating (not available), would be useful.

Okay, typical DIY person here. Here's what I ran into. First the the can should be labeled in bold capital letters "HIGH GLOSS". Had it been, I never would have bought it. After I applied it, I figured the oil would soak in and the gloss would calm down - it didn't. Second, on close inspection it looked like the entire surface had little tiny pimples in it - thousands of them. I had meticulously sanded and tack ragged the project, so it wasn't dust. So I ended up spending an entire day removing the stuff and starting over. During the removal process, it was apparent the little pimples were tiny bits of what looked like wax. I'm beginning to think this product might be some kind of furniture wax mixed in with a solvent. Whatever it is, the chemists didn't do a very good job of putting it together. Yes, maybe I could have danced a jig to really shake the heck out of the can beforehand but who knows. I only know that this product cost me a day of drudgery. I had used tung oil finish before but quite a few years ago. My previous experiences were all good. I had found tung oil to be very easy to apply and thought this time would be no different. Now I'd never used Watco's tung oil before, but figured it was equivalent to the Homer Formbys and Minwax products that I'd used without issue years ago. So it's 2018 and I guess formulas have changed. Maybe all of them are the same now so beware regardless of which brand you go for. At least my Home Depot store refunded my money - no questions asked. That I do appreciate.

We hear your frustration! Rust-Oleum Watco Tung Oil Finish is intended for use on bare or stained wood surfaces only. The wood surface does need to be sanded in the direction of the grain to help the surface accept the oil. Begin with #120 grit sandpaper and progress though #150, #180 and #220 grits. The container must also be thoroughly shaken as well to ensure a consistent finish. Please keep in mind that this product soaks into the wood and provides a hand rubbed finish.

Thank you for sharing your experience using our Watco Tung Oil Larry. For the best results, we recommend flooding the surface with the Tung Oil using a brush or cloth, then allowing the oil to penetrate for 15 minutes before wiping away the excess. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2 Rustoleum

First time I've ever used Tung oil, but I very much like the finish. I cannot yet speak to it's durability, but for an oil finish it will not be near as high as other types of protective finishes.

To ensure proper drying, we recommend wiping the surface thoroughly after the Watco Tung Oil has been allowed to penetrate the wood for 15 minutes. If excess oil is left on the surface, it may remain tacky for a prolonged period. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2 Rustoleum

It’s an easy to apply finish that can be brushed on and the excess wiped off. It does take at least 24 hours for each coat to dry. It’s a gloss finish if that’s what a person wants on the wood. It looks nice and quick to apply.

Something is amiss here! To ensure proper penetration and drying of Rust-Oleum Watch Tung Oil Finish, it is essential that it is applied to a bare, unfinished wood surface. Existing finishes must be removed with sandpaper or stripper prior to application. Once the oil has been allowed to penetrate for 15 minutes, make sure the wipe the surface thoroughly with a clean lint free cloth to remove excess oil from the surface.
