A:  The gap between the post and the gate usually ends up being around 1/2 an inch wide.

A:  On any gate with this hardware I use 1 inch space between the posts plus the width of the door. For our area and for service of the lawn care company my gate is 42" and my space between posts is 43" with the hinges side having exactly ½". I also make sure that the hinge side's post is especially stable to accommodate the weight of the door always pulling on the side of the hanging door.. I align the arms of the hinge to overlay the cross members of the structure of the door.. Another item to add is a self closing spring so the door naturally wants to close, available at The Home Depot.
