I just needed to change the Male at the shower base cause the plastic flange cracked. I took the plate cover off and found that this was the problem. A:  The rubber gasket goes under the shower base, on top of the plastic nut. Use silicon sealer for the top to set in the upper drain. Do not use plumber putty of it will leak in a few months. . See video link below. It is not exactly the same drain but the assembly sequence is similar.

Q:Why is there no tool for the nut? It has a 3 1/2 in nut. Almost every house has 16 in on center luckily mine is 20 in, but still I cannot get my 18 in adjustable wrench in there to loosen nor tighten unless I take the whole shower out. Unreal to design something and have no tools for it. Luckily I have automotive tools. I used an oil wrench and an open end oil wrench to do this, but I gouged the plastic nut. Yes I am venting.

A:  There are several types of tool that are made to fit the drain nut. Google: Channellock 212 4-1/4-Inch Jaw Capacity Plier for Oil Filters PVC and Sink Strainers. Suggest that you just cut off old nut with a cold chisel. You can install the new one with a large channel lock pliers. Note: Assemble new drain receiver and tighten BEFORE attaching/gluing to ABS. this way you will have room to turn the pliers at a 90 degree angle to tighten nut.

                Answer This Question

A:  I did the assembly this way. I cut off the old drain at the riser about 1 inch below the nut. Disassemble and remove old drain. Measure a new drain riser stub to about 1/2:" below bottom of shower/bath pan. Important::: Put new nut and washer on old drain before gluing riser stub. Glue new riser stub and connection collar to existing drain. On top, place heavy bead of silicon caulking around opening where new drain will seat. Next step requires two people. Put ABS cement/glue on stub and inside new drain. Person on top inserts new drain down onto pan. Person on bottom presses old , new extend drain pipe up into the assemble. let dry for a few minute. Person below now tighten the lower nut while person on to holes assembly with the provided flat key tool. Reinstall the new chrome grate,. Clean up any extra silicon. Wait at least 4 hours for silicon to set and water test. Wait 24 hours before use. look on Youtube for instruction videos.
