A:  i would say 1/4. but i have used bigger , i just had to drill the plate a little to widen it.

A:  Yes…they say 4x4 but the real size is 3.5 by 3.5.  The everyday 4x4 posts at your favorite home improvement store works. 

A:  Yes they do.The railing kits I used came with 3.5x3.5 posts and after 2 NW Pa winters they are still solid and rust free.

A:  No. Use with the post base bracket for solid support.

A:  Possibly but the cap that goes over it creates a very strong finished product. We have the plate and cap and would not have done it any other way.

A:  Hello Sir, Even if the Fixplak 44 work well by it's own, we do recommand to use them with the Base 44 ( collar ). For 2 reasons : is it sturdier and better looking in our opinion. Anything else, please let us know. Thanks
