Q:Do I need to do a birdsmouth cut if I use these? Or, can I simply slide the rafter into the Hurricane Ties. Each rafter will be 80" long

A:  Hello Eric, glad to help answer your question. If you don't cut the rafter to fit flush you can place the tie on the outside of wall & cover over it with the sheathing.

        A:  you should strike the nails at an angle and it make it more rigid.

          A:  Minimum is 2 nails, I nail 2 nails top and bottom on one side, the other side one in the middle.

            A:  H1Z is the ZMAX®, hot-dip galvanized. The H1 is galvanized, but not ZMAX®, hot-dip galvanized.

              A:  Will work with pitch up to 45 degree. You may have to modify a little by drilling additional holes.

                  A:  Hello UniBug, glad to help answer your question. Both can be used. 8d common nails or #9 x 1-1/2 in. Strong-Drive SD screws. If you happen to be working with dimensional lumber you can use 2 in. screws. hope this helped.

                  A:  I have used both nails and screws. My opinion is screws are better, but code may require nails. Contact you code enforcement and get a definate answer. Keep in mind that nails sometimes split the lumber.

                    A:  There’s actually 2 different H1’s. Regular galvanized and ZMAX hot dip galvanized. Different price, too.
