Two 5 Gal Containers Gave Different Results
Home Depot only had two 5 Gallon containers left. Both gave the exact same information with the code of Clear 500-N even though they had different looking labels. However, they did not give the same appearance on my fence. The one with the label on the left was thinner and did not give a golden finish. The one on the right did. I spent $339.91 and now I have a fence that looks completely different. I had power washed the fence before applying the Clear finish. In the past I used Olympic Maximum. I'm sorry I didn't stay with it this time too.

Hi BobbyK - Thank you for your review. I'm sorry to hear that the two containers you used left different finishes on your fence! Even though one of the buckets had an updated label, both containers should provide identical results. To help ensure a uniform finish, we also recommend intermixing the product when working from multiple containers. To fix the finish on your fence, we recommend applying an additional thin coat to the whole area once your last coat has dried for 72 hours. For further assistance with this, please feel free to reach out to us directly. We'd be happy to help. - Sara Behr
    Behr Waterproofing Exterior Finish
As the name implies, this appears to be more of a finish than a sealer or protector of a deck surface. Mine started peeling after two years and now at the 4 year mark it looks awful. One board on the right is what it is like after I sanded. It appears I need to sand completely down to bare wood to remove the areas that really held up (like I wish it all had.) As I study the products, I am leaning to an oil based penetrating stain - four magical words that I think separates the "wood finish" from a reliable, durable surface.

Normaly I would recomend this but I bought this product twice before with great results however this time the color was way too red. I mixed it well and applied it on the same materal. It was so bad I had to redo it. Looks like quality assurance was on vacation on that batch. That's strike one for Behr.

Hi Dep - Thank you for your review. I'm sorry to hear that the finish felt tacky after applying 2 coats! This product should feel dry to the touch after 1-2 hours and come to a completely cure after 72 hours. If the surface still feels sticky after 72 hours, we recommend cleaning a small test area with soap and water. If this reduces or removes the tackiness, you can continue to clean the rest of the surface. For further assistance with your project, please feel free to reach out us directly. We'd be happy to help. - Sara Behr

I love this product. I used to hire someone to sand and stain every year. It was pricey and the stain they used never lasted. It got a dark film on top and lost its color. I am a 72 year old female and what I did was use a deck wash and then spread two thin layers of this. I am into my third year on my upstairs deck and my second year on my downstairs deck and both look lovely and have weathered well. Plus I saved a huge amount of money. So I did the front porch this week. Could not be happier. Thanks BEHR

Pigment sits on top of wood surface
2nd coat gives a blotchy pigment when using a roller. I am nervous about peeling later, I was hoping for less pigment.

Hi Hopfull, thank you for your review. I'm sorry to hear that the second coat is making the finish blotchy. This is not typical. I recommend applying a thin third coat (test a small area first) to even out the finish. Customer satisfaction is important to us, and we appreciate your feedback. The stain did an excellent job! Our deck is 30 years old and looks much newer. We used the clear stain. It’s a wonderful stain and goes on easily.

          Too orange and opaque
I’m a little shocked by how opaque and orange this turned out. Especially on new wood. I used on an old deck after power washing and sanding, on a table and bench after sanding and on new pressure treated Deck. I wish more grain came through and am hesitant to do a second coat and lose more grain. Plus I’d like it to lean more natural/brown than orange. Any advise?? Can I do transparent chocolate over this??

This product just keeps getting better and better. My sprinklers constantly hit my wood fence which ruins the finish and speeds up the decay process of the fence. After appying this product the water now just beads off the wood fence that will help preserve my fence.

Run away from Behr deck stains!!
2017 I worked very hard to clean, prepare and stain my deck. Within 3 months it started peeling, badly. I went back to Home Depot and the employees told me that there was a nationwide lawsuit against Behr. After a great deal of proving and submitting evidence including a video, I was instructed to WAIT until further notice. So last fall (2 years later)I was told I had 3 weeks to resubmit all that same information. They refused to refund me. My deck is so embarrassing. BEHR NOR HOME DEPOT WILL REFUND ME NO MATTER WHAT THEY PROMISED!! Wish I could upload my videos so you could see what I look at every day!

            Hi StillPeeled,

Thank you for your review. I'm sorry to hear that our transparent stain started to peel after only 3 months! This is a penetrating wood finish so peeling is not normal. To fix the finish, I recommend removing the stain, preparing the surface with our All-In-One Wood Cleaner, then applying 2 new thin coats with a pad applicator. for further assistance with this, please feel free to reach out to us directly. 22 year old deck
Easy to use, goes on smooth. Be careful with drips, it's stain...and it leaves a deep stain. Overall looks great, applied three gallons over two coats on a 13x22 old deck that has been treated every couple of years. After power washing it lost its color, the cedar transparent gave it a new look.

Color tone different on old wood
you may pick a lighter color if your deck is old. overall great quality and final result was great. You may need more than 1 coat depending on the age of the wood.

                  Looks great
We found the 5 inch brush worked well for applying the finish. It did come out pretty dark, considering it's called clear, transparent. I knew this going in and I think it made a huge difference in the appearance and hopefully prolongs the life of the fence. This stuff is also very forgiving when applying and didn't show my brush marks.

I always buy Behr interior paint because it has always worked wonderfully, so when we wanted to stain our deck we purchased BEHR Premium 1 gal. Cedar Naturaltone Transparent Waterproofing Exterior Wood Finish. 1st off, we had to make multiple trips to Home Depot to buy more gallons as it didn't cover as much of the deck as it was supposed to. 2ndly, the consistency of the stain was different in each can. Some was much thicker and some was thinner. The staff at Home Depot couldn't explain why it was like that. They tried shaking it and it was still different. So in some parts of the deck it rolled on like paint and in other parts it spread like water. Now that it has been on for about 6 months, there are MANY spots where the stain has already come off. Shouldn't it last longer then that? Also, when it rains the deck actually looks worse because you can then see every knot and the stain itself almost "disappears". Bottom line is that this product SUCKS and you should not waste your money on it!

Hi Jenn, thank you for your review. I'm sorry to hear about the inconsistency of the stain, and about the peeling spots. This is not typical, as our product will typically last 4 years on decks. If the issue is widespread, I recommend removing the stain, cleaning the surface, and applying two new coats. If you prefer to see less wood grain and more color, I suggest the semi-transparent finish. Customer satisfaction is important to us, and we appreciate your feedback. My initial review of this product is good. The application of the clear Sealant is quite easy using a variety of foam brushes of different sizes. Although it started to rain before the sealant dried, there is no residual spotting or discoloration after drying. Make sure you don't oversaturate the sponges with sealant because of drippings. Since I have not finished using the product to seal my Cedar Gazebo/Pergola, it would be premature to give a 5-Start rating. Stay tune for further updates.

Great stain. 1 gallon covers approximately 300 sq. ft. with 2 coats. Clean or power wash your deck first and allow to dry. It takes approximately 3 days to completely dry. Make sure you have 3 days of sunshine above 80 degrees. The stain will stain your siding so be sure to protect it before you begin. Buy it!!
