I love our floors! The contractor put them in, but it seemed to go quickly and easily. It may not be the hardest of wood - I managed to drop a wine bottle from the top of the fridge the other day and it put a good little dent in the floor - luckily we didn't go with tile or the bottle would have exploded! The floor has cleaned up very nicely though from the occasional spill and a couple "dog accidents."

Excellent flooring for the price. We just installed about 800 square feet. Looks very nice and bright. Only had 5-6 boards that were badly warped out of 35 boxes. Numerous boards had chipped ends but I was able to place them where they could be cut off. Only a few boards had tongues or grooves that were unusable, typically because of knots. The scraped finish adds a rustic element but not too rustic. We are very happy with the quality and result of this flooring install.

Bought this but ended up returning it. This evaluation is from going through 4 boxes of 5" wide Bruce American Vintage Mocha Scraped hardwood flooring. The finish was uneven and blotchy on a majority of the boards. Many boards had defects in the wood on top, bottom or both which made them unusable. Bruce did not fill quite a few holes on the top sides of the boards with putty. Even inexpensive Chinese hardwood flooring that I've seen has holes filled on both top and bottom. Rough areas that should have been filled and sanded did not get such treatment. Some of the boards (not a lot) had broken tongues. Some of the boards had cracks significant enough that they should not be installed. Some of the boards had large sections missing from the bottoms of the boards. All together, more than half of the boards were not usable. The instructions tell the installer to use a urethane adhesive. Professional installers who I spoke with had varying opinions about the use of an adhesive. The reality is, due to the 5" width, this product should be made from rift and / or quarter sawn boards rather than plain sawn since the rift / quarter boards have far less potential for expansion and contraction. Rift / quarter sawn boards are more expensive but the need for adhesive goes away. Adhesive may make replacing boards after a spill or water leak very difficult. Installation is more costly and time consuming due to the need for adhesive. The requirement for adhesive should be made plain as day instead of putting this information on the bottom of the box. I called Bruce technical support. Bruce technical support consisted of a lady who reads from a script or runs to an expert. Even after consulting with the expert, the answers given were not to the questions that I asked. Please do your own research before buying 4" or wider hardwood. I am glad that I bought this from Home Depot since the local HD has great customer service and a generous return policy. I noticed that the local Home Depot store put the returned hardwood flooring back on the shelf rather than returning it to the vendor or manufacturer. Really the product is defective and should not be resold. This cost a lot of time so I hope others can avoid the problem.

    Hello Paul,

Thank you very much for taking the time to enter your comments. The issues you had with the stain being uneven and blotchy, boards being split, and defects are all things that would be warranted concerns, and returning them to the store is what we would have recommended. Rough spots and unfilled wormholes are common in a hand scraped floor. When this floor is manufactured it is semi-filled. Leaving the worm holes, knots, rough spots, etc are considered to be the character marks of the flooring.

We do recommend using an urethane construction adhesive in addition to mechanically fastening the floor to help with issues of seasonal distortion. Through testing in our installation laboratories we have determined this to be the best installation method for flooring 4" and wider. We manufacture our hardwood floors using the plane sawn method because it is a more environmentally friendly way of manufacturing wood flooring. This method uses more of the tree and generates less waste. Armstrong

The boxes of wood flooring planks arrived in good condition with only about 8 of them unusable out of 18 boxes because of broken tongues and grooves OR being warped enough that we were unable to pull them into alignment. Overall we are very happy with the product. Thank you!

Ordered 35 boxes and we love the wood. Putting it in bedroom, living room, kitchen and hall. The only problem is about 1/3 of the product has defects. Deep gouges, and knote holes were the main problems. I would never order this product again do to the poor quality and even though Home Depot has no problem with returns it is a hassle reboxing and returning it. My only request would be to the manufacturer to stop putting poor quality product in a top quality wood and improve their quality control process. Best regards

So much better than the picture!
Wanted rustic and something with a lodge style look that was also a hard wood. Really impressed with the flooring, was concerned it would look too much like the oak floors of the 90's but this had a good mix of dark tones and planks with character. Be sure to prelay or go through the boxes if you want to mix boards with character in with plainer boards, not all boxes had character boards. My husband and I installed it ourselves, if you have a working knowledge of how to do it dyi is not very difficult.

      Great Floor
We had Home Depot install this on our main level ands stairs. It is beautiful! There was very little waste (we have 3 unopened boxes to return when they were done). It has a great hand scraped texture without it being over done. Little imperfections, but that is what gives the floor its character. We are going to purchase more and install it on our upper level now too!

        Rustic Modern
I love my floor..it is exactly what I wanted. I was looking for rustic modern at an adorable price and this fit the bill perfectly. My only caveat is that 25% of the wood was very blotchy when it arrived. It was really unusable and we did a lot of sorting..Home Depot exchanged the boxes and made everything right in the end and I am very pleased with the result. This is a rustic floor with a lot of natural imperfections including knots and worm holes. If rustic isn't your thing this would not be a good choice. If it is then you will likely be satisfied. It is a good value for 3/4" solid oak.

Marvelous Old World Look Has Touch of Class!
Overall, we are very pleased with the final result. There were many short boards and only one 82" board which was damaged in transit (this out of 8 boxes of wood). We had ordered an extra box and so there were enough longer boards to get the look we wanted. I would recommend ordering so that you have 20% waste and are able to pick and choose your boards. A very solid floor with the "vintage scrape look" as described. We accented with tall white trim. We might put this floor in our living room as well but would like to have it in place for awhile before making that decision. Quality/value was rated as "good" because of the number of short boards; otherwise, it would have been "excellent" all around.

        Solid Product
Pun intended. This solid oak floor was consistent across 6 boxes, from a color, quality, straightness, and usability standpoint. They say to expect some wastage, don't fret too much over that, as the quality really is very good. DO take the time allow the boards to acclimate to your room, as this also allows you to plan out which length will go where. The randomness of the lengths inside each box allows you to have no pattern when laying it out, as long as you take the time plan the lack of pattern. Hope that makes sense. The knots, small bumps, slight color variations, etc makes the whole room the focus, not the individual boards. Great product, would recommend.

        Love this floor
We did our first floor which is open concept kitchen/dining & living rooms and foyer. We love it! We have a rustic/distressed theme and it fits in perfect. I can't really comment on the "ease of installation" because we had a contractor put it in. He didn't complain or mention it was tough to use though. After the floor was installed, the construction crew kept working and the floor took a beating. Good news is it cleaned up perfectly! We had to hand clean some paint and dry wall mud off it but it looks as good as new. It got a few small nicks and scratches during installation/construction but we touched them up with dark stain and you can't see them. The floor already has distressed and natural wood flaws in it, so after it is touched up you can not see the nicks. We have a dog and her nails so not leave marks. We have furniture on it with plastic on the bottom of the legs and they do not scratch it either. We love the color. It looks great in the sun light and at night in the lighting. We would buy it again! It will last a lifetime.

          Top of the line. Period.
My wife and I have been blown away by the look, feel, and overall quality of this hardwood flooring, and so have the vast majority of our house guests. We were *almost* dissuaded from purchasing these floors by the other reviews posted here. However, we considered the issues that they presented, in the context that they presented it, brought a sample home, and ultimately let the floors speak for themselves. We could not be happier that we decided to purchase these floors. Style we purchased: 3/4 in. thick 5 in. wide solid hardwood. Number of cases: Dozens. Method of installation: Professional. Placement: Throughout entire home. Here is a summary of our experience: 1) Floors were expected to be delivered in 8 days, we received them in 4 days. 2) On the day of delivery, the delivery driver was timely, friendly, and extremely helpful. 3) Floors were neither bent nor otherwise damaged in any way. Not one case. 4) Finish was fantastic, with excellent variation in color and size. 5) Installation was a breeze, though in fairness we had professional installation. In terms of the other reviewers, which had a so vastly different experience, maybe they just got a bad batch and we got a good one. It happens. But, our take, based on their reviews, is that they either had a different thickness (I don't see how 3/4 in. thick solid hardwood is going to bend at the extreme that they claim; though it is common and reasonable for some bending to take place) or were not professional contractors and had the wrong expectations about hardwood flooring. If you're not a professional contractor, don't give these floors a poor review for ease of installation or installation issues. You probably didn't have the right tools and experience (thus problem-solving ability) to install flooring. Period. Flooring isn't a picture puzzle for ages 5 and above, so don't install it yourself if you don't know what you're doing (even if you think you do). Furthermore, if you want the exact same color and dimensions from every single piece or section of wood, then you should be buying vinyl floors, carpet, or ceramic tile. Real, premium hardwood flooring is expected to differ in its grain, color, size, and overall appearance. For those of you considering this flooring, take a sample home. If the style fits with your desired design, and you're expectations are aligned with the reality of what solid hardwood flooring provides, then don't hesitate for a second about purchasing this flooring. Otherwise, grab some vinyl, carpet, or tile. Seriously.

          Nice wood
Looks good in our house. Used it for stairs down to the basement. I didn't install but looked easy for the guy who did the work. I've been using them for a few weeks and they've held up... There's definitely some texture to this wood so I assume it'd be easy to hide any accidents

Be sure and open all the boxes first!
If Bruce had better quality control and cared about the product it is producing this would have the potential to be one of the better flooring options on the market. Sadly, what I received was two things 1) About half the order looks absolutely amazing... rich full tones, an array of variation makes this the perfect modern hand scrapped flooring option 2) Other half of the order is absolute garbage... a flat, washed out finish that appears to have been sun faded is a stark contrast to the other half. Not sure how a company who has been around for more than 100 years can produce such a sub par product for this price. Will not be using Bruce next time. Photo taken with only natural light (daylight)

            LOVE our floors!!
We had these installed by a contractor through Home Depot. We replaced our laminate wood living room and laminate tile kitchen with these floors and could not be happier! They are solid, beautiful, and extremely easy to touch up which is great because we have two young children. Highly recommend these floors!

Overall a wonderfull REAL wood floor.
The shipping was fast and they replaced the two broken boxes in 24 hours. Only a few pieces I were poorly stained or had broken edges.

                Excellent Floor. Stunning.
This floor is absolutely gorgeous. It has that sandy, by the beach look. Don't listen to the other reviewer, as they obviously have no taste in wood color. Each individual piece might catch you off guard, but when it is put together on the floor, it looks amazing. This wood really brightens up my room. The wood was extremely easy to install and there was very little waste. If you are using the floating installation (which is what we did), I recommend using a high end underlayment. Here is a picture after it was installed. I apologize for the blue tape, that was pulled off the next morning.

Nice feel and quality but inconsistent color
We had our floor installed by an outside contractor. He likes the quality of the wood and has commented that there is very little waste. The product feels nice under foot and does not have that consistent rippled effect (like waves) that you often find in mass produced hand scraped floors. My only complaint is that there are multiple, dark "stain spots (1/2') and streaks (2-3") that are on the wood. These do not show up in ANY of the Home Depot displays or on the website but they are absolutely part of the design for the distressed look. They are consistent through many boxes and there are 10-15 per room, i.e there are many boards per box that are dotted. If I had known about them, I would not have purchased this wood (although they are growing on me). My husband likes them because he thinks they add to the interest and the age - I think they look sloppy.

                    Beautiful Floor
I just finished the installation, I choose my own GC as opposed to having HD install it. Our contractor and installation crew indicated that the install went quite painless and there were no surprises. After reading mixed reviews on the quality of Bruce/Armstrong floors, I have to say initially I am very pleased with my purchase. We had just under 500sq./ft. of in installed in our kitchen/ dining and living room including several stops leading to our foyer. The floor itself looks wonderful, very rich, warm and elegant. It has a very rustic and authentic look with not being overbearingly dark (blends well with dark and lighter furniture and decor nicely). I cannot sufficiently rate the long term durability of the product as it was just installed, but I can say that is very quiet. I personally feel that with the level of quality our GC's crew showed the install that the product will keep us happy for many years to come.

We loved the look of the wood but every piece had an extremely corse finsh. None of the wood was smooth. It feels like it needs to be sanded still. We returned and are going woth something else.

                      Disappointment
About a year ago, we decided to extend this hardwood floor throughout our house after initially installing it in one of the rooms. However, the recent purchase showed a significant quality decline. Boards had burns, pink stains, and other defects. Many were curved, causing unsightly gaps. Can't recommend it for new installations due to the unexpected quality drop.

Hello there! Thank you for taking the time to review our product.

We are very sorry to hear that you are dissatisfied with our flooring product.

Hardwood is a natural product and the beauty of this collection will feature greater amount of visual character such as wider color and grain variation, mineral streaks and knots. As this is part of a hand-scraped collection, there is a higher degree of natural character to align with the rustic feel in a handscraped floor. However, if you feel the issues are beyond the expectations of the flooring product, you can have a claim filed with Home Depot. Your proof of purchase will be necessary for this.

A lot of the the beauty of the the hand-scraped products is in the roughness of the product is what makes it feel more realistic. Hardwood is a natural product and the beauty of this collection will feature greater amount of visual character such as wider color and grain variation, mineral streaks and knots. Because wood is a natural product, naturally occurring wood characteristics differ between each sample.
