Based on your description of the product’s texture/consistency and behavior, it would appear that you may have purchased aged/expired product (newly purchased may not necessarily be of recent manufacture). DAP Plastic Wood (all versions) are designed and tested for stain and paint/coating performance. As indicated on the package label and supporting product literature: "if staining, test wood filler with desired stain on scrap wood before filling to ensure desired stain color." and "If wood is to be stained, stain before filling with wood filler. Then use stain to develop desired final finish.” If the pre-stained wood and wood filler are not closely matched in color, an acceptable color match may not be achieved when applying the final coats of stain. Plastic Wood Professional Wood Filler is a high-performance, solvent-based wood filler, that is formulated for fast drying characteristics. This formula can benefit from solvent (acetone) tooling and does require the same solvent for clean-up. Likewise, it does have a strong solvent odor (which is noted on the product label and supporting product literature). Based on your commentary, it would appear that the water-based Plastic Wood All-Purpose Wood Filler or the Plastic Wood-X Stainable Wood Filler with Dry Time Indicator would be more in line with your preferences. If you are dissatisfied with your purchase, the product may be returned to the point of purchase or returned directly to DAP for a refund of your purchase price.
