This product really does sand down like wood. Very helpful in creating a smooth surface over the plywood for our cornhole set. It was easier at some points to roll the putty in my hand to fill the smaller cracks and holes.

Big fan of Plastic wood products, bought this because I don't use it all that often and wanted a way to have it on hand, securely closed so it would not dry up. It is easy to apply, dries quickly and easy to sand smooth I use it for small cracks or nicks, not sure if you would want to use this for large areas.

Terrible product! Don't waste your money and time. We wasted an entire weekend filling in the cracks and holes in our deck, sanding it and painting two coats. We waited the recommended amount of time for all products to dry and it looked fabulous for a week. A week later the product bubbled up beneath the high-quality latex paint whereupon it then peeled off and the "3x stronger wood filler" is complete dust. We are beyond disappointed that Home Depot would offer and suggest such an inferior product. Wish we would have read more of these reviews first.

Thank you for posting your review. We're sorry to hear about your experience with DAP Plastic Wood All-Purpose Latex Wood Filler. Plastic Wood is not designed or recommended for use as a "stand alone" product, as indicated on the product package label and supporting product literature: "Exterior applications must be coated with latex or oil-based paint or solid color stain”. The only way that the product would behave as described, is if there was moisture exposure. This means that water is entering the patch through the paint or bypassing it (from the edges or from underneath). For applications where moisture is a concern, we would recommend the use of DAP Platinum Patch Advanced Exterior Filler. Unlike other wood patches and spackling compounds, this formula is designed for stand-alone performance. Should you require further assistance, please feel free to reach out to DAP’s Technical Customer Service Department at 888-327-8477. DAP

Very easy to work with. I would suggest buying in small amounts. Dries quicker than expected during use. Would also suggest letting it set a while. Worth the price. I had used it to repair molding trim after a husky chewed on the for a bit. Turnwd out better than expected!

This product works well if you understand that it dries up in the container if you leave it open! (So keep it covered). It is best to seal shut and store in a plastic zip lock bag. Also, when filling small holes, you can use a wet rag to smooth it over versus filling, drying and then sanding for a quick fill that doesn't need to be perfect! It will look great and smooth after painting.

Love, LOVE this stuff. It is easy to use, hardens great, stainable, and the cap keeps it fresh, unlike canned products. I bought it to repair an entry table that broke in a move, but since I've used it to fill in the holes when changing pulls in drawers and to fill a couple of small holes on my floors! Awesome product! Recommend it heartily.

While rebuilding a 125 yr old schoolhouse built of shiplap, I tried using the plastic wood to fill damage spots and spaces around shrunken knots. plastic wood is relatively dry, so adhesion is poor. Application is simple with a putty knife. if repair was on an edge of a board, or deeper than 3/8" the repair would just fall out. once completely dry ,it sands well. Stains require several coats to match compared to new wood. if it had better adhesive, it would work better.

Would be nice to have in caulk tube!
I'm filling some glue-lam beams that have separated between the plies slightly. Not structurally a problem, but more astetically an issue. The tubs and tubes are difficult to apply in my case, and the quick dry time makes it challenging to get into the groves (1/2 - 1 inch deep and 1/8 to 1/4 inch wide). I have tried loading the product up in a clean blank tube of caulk with good success, but loading it is a pain and messy. Would be great to offer this in a caulk tube where the tip size could be varied and it would help it get into deep grooves or cracks and could be used for longer fill scenarios. Do caulk tubes of this product exist?

I bought this product to fill rotten holes in my outdoor deck railing. I filled it in let it cure for 2 days and I believed it worked great. Then the rain came today and washed it out. I called DAP and the customer service agent acted like I should have known you have to paint this right away to protect it from the rain. However, when you read all the directions it doesn't even mention this. I pointed this out to her and she said its latex of course it will fail in the rain. Ok I am not a painter or a chemist I need directions that clearly state that this product should not be used if any chance of rain is in the forecast. I planned on sanding and painting to match my railing but the weather had other plans. Don't be fooled by the word "plastic" in the product. If this was plastic the rain would not bother it.

Why is this half full? I was more than surprised when I bought this wood filler yesterday only to find upon opening the 3 inch deep container today it was only filled half way with wood filler (see picture). Yes, it probably did weigh 32 ounces as stated on the label, but when you are looking at products on the store shelf and trying to judge how much you will need, you look at the volume of the container (which is white so you cannot see into it). I was very disappointed that I will have to make another run to the store to buy more wood filler. I hope DAP will consider filling their containers so all of us DIY'ers will not have to make a second trip for more wood filler.

After asking repairmen what they would charge for projects, I decided to fix my wood problems myself. I knew I could dig out the rotten wood and then fill with this Natural Plastic Wood Filler. Then I gave a few coats of paint and I should be good for another 10 years. Plus I saved $500.00 fixing my four posts that had rotted in the decorative molding. This is a picture of the worst post's molding where I dug out the rotted wood and then filled in. I think I could have smoothed out the filler better, but I just could not stand being out in all the pollen. I have more projects to do and will save a lot more money doing it myself!

I have been using this product for the past 2 years. Works well for repairing dings in carmel-colored oak engineered wood floors and filling in the nailheads on new oak stair treads. To match the wood filler to the oak, I mixed a bit of the oak stain (a few drops) in a small amount polyurethane (plastic bottle cap half full) to spot seal and color the wood filler. I couldn’t apply the stain directly to the wood filler as the color quickly became too dark. Some of the floor repairs and also painted trim repaired on window sills and doorways (from what looked like an aggressive dog) are about 2 years old, and still look impressive. Also patched some small holes in exterior Hardiboard and painted the patch. That’s holding up well, too. The product packaging is excellent. I found the stored-shelf-life can be extended a year by cleaning the lip of the container & cap, then covering the unused wood-filler with a cut-to-size square of food-wrap and sprinkle a few small drops of water on top of food wrap.

I used this product to fill a large gouge in a board on my deck. I filled it in three layers, allowing each to dry completely. After the last one dried, I sanded it smooth and stained it along with the rest of the deck. It looks great, and so far (only a week), it is holding up well. Time will tell how good a product it really is, but right now I am very happy with the fix.

CRAP! What a headache- this " stainable product" is NOT stainable what so ever. I had tons of screwheads in mid center of my fence, since I was taking alot of time to refinish it, I wanted it as good as I could get it. I bought this to fill in the holes across the entire fence, sanded as per product prep guidelines..... I stained over the Dap Plastic wood all purpose paintable & stainable product and it shows through, horrible- its not stainable at all. See for yourself! How did I fix it? I had to sand even more of it off, dig it out of each of the 15 sections of fence, each section had approx 15 holes= 225 holes to re do....chisel out & RE FILL over it with Minwax Stainable wood filler- that worked. Please do not buy this product if you intend to use any stain on it-you will be more than sorry. This has taken me almost 2 extra weeks to deal with the mishap.

The material is difficult to squeeze out and is very sticky. It stuck better to my hands and tools than it did the cracks I was trying to fill. Once I got it in the general area that I wanted it, it was difficult to smooth out, without completely pulling it off the surface I was working on. When it dries it shrinks SIGNIFICANTLY and becomes very brittle. It pulled away from the cracks I filled when dry, leaving gaps and it easily crumbles away when touched/wiping down the surface. Mind you, it's been in use on my window ledge/molding less than a year. Terrible product, do not recommend.

I've used this product many times and it's always worked fine. Although, I've never tried to stain it so the reviews that say it won't take a stain may be valid. For those of you who say it clumps too much; you are correct, however, the secret is right there on the package: "Easy Water Clean-Up". Put the filler in the holes, cracks, etc even if you need to do it in clumps, then use your finger, (or tool), dipped in water to smooth it all out. Works fine every time.

After reading reviews I decided to give it a try. I used it to fill finish nail holes in crown molding, it applies easily and wipes off smoothly with your finger or paper towel. The one problem using products in a tube, is as it empties it’s hard to dispense product, I found by adding a folder clip (see picture) it took care of the problem and made it easier to apply all the product. I had been using DAP acetone base plastic would filler, it dries out very quickly, you must keep adding acetone to keep it pliable. The acetone is very hard to breathe and most likely bad for your health.
