Customer Reviews for Earthgro 1.5 cu. ft. Brown Wood Shredded Bagged Mulch

The mulches are shredded too much to a degree that 80% in a bag are reduced to like powers, which will easily be washed away by the rain. You can see the size difference between discolored old mulch from last year and new Scotts Brown Mulch on top in the picture.

The price was great and I bought 150 bags of the Scotts (smaller bags than Viagro, but I chose Scott this year since they are easier to carry). The problem is some bags of the Scotts mulch were a redish color and did not match the brown. There were ~ 12 out of 150 with the wrong color. You could not tell the color was wrong without opening the bag. Also, a couple of bags had construction debris in them. The Scotts was the same price as the Viagro, but with 25% less mulch ... my key learning here is I should have stuck with the Viagro which I have used for years .... Scotts cost more, and has inconsistent colors

I have used Scotts Earthgro for the past four seasons. I started with one house, this year I did the neighbors, and I think next year we'll go one neighbor further. I find it easy to spread to a good depth (2-3"), and the color holds out well. I prefer the brown for its natural, clean, and simple appearance. I don't love that the bag sizes have gotten smaller while the price stayed the same, but I was able to purchase during the spring sale so that was not a big deal. I don't love dealing with the plastic bags, but my local HD has a plastic bag receptacle this year, so again no big deal. This mulch is usually in stock at my local store, so I can repair kid damage, animal digging, and planting damage easily. I find this mulch attractive, functional, and easy to use for my DIY landscaping.

We have used this mulch multiple times. It looks great and holds up all year. Will continue purchasing!

I was told my regular brown mulch was not available and they recommened this. It is just wood chips that float away and not good for trees.

These are my go to wood chips and I will still buy them. Check the bag before you buy. Clearly it matters where you buy. The store in Riverside, Ca is crap. I bought 30 bags and now I’m stuck with 30 bags of dry light brown saw dust. If anyone has gone to that store they will agree that is very busy and unorganized. And the clearly don’t care aboit quality. You can see the differnce

Very disappointed to open the bags and see the mulch covered in mold.

I had 10 bags that were great-larger nugget style not shredded. Got 15 more (same bag, same bar code) and they all are shredded, which I didn’t want. I will now go into the garden dept and handpick each bag. Poor QC

I've mulched beds for fifty years and this product is the best for the price. For all you mulch rookies, mulch is made from wood. Of course there's going to be chunks of larger chips. I pick those out and toss them in the next space I'm going to spread mulch over. As far as those of you complaining about being wet, that's normal with bagged or bulk. Once spread the mulch drys out and it compacts to make a weed barrier and keeps weed seeds out. Once I spread it in a bed I walk over it to speed the compression process. I've spent big bucks on triple shredded mulch that decomposes and has to redone the next year. I get two years from the Earthgro and it's available in all states. Other brands that have different chemicals added are banded from sale or use in some states. Check the manufacturers web site for details.

So I've been buying Scott's products for decades. Usually the quality is very good, especially their fertilizers. But this year when I went to purchase the Scott's Mulch as I have for many years, the quality & the color is inconsistent. Not only the color, but the type of mulch was different between purchases. I went on Sunday to buy 25 bags - which was just about what my Flex could hold, and then went back to the same store the very next day, and the type & color of the mulch had changed. See picture. Where is the quality control Scott's & Home Depot ?

Nothing more than colored wood chips whose color started to fade in 48 hours! In 48 days, you will just have plain wood chips you could get from any tree company! And the color, what a joke! The so called brown mulch that I got looked more red than brown! Then, a few days later I went back to Home Depot to find 2 totally different color browns in the same pile! Do yourself a favor and stay far away from these colored bagged wood chips! Scott’s should be ashamed of themselves for selling this garbage!

We bought 20 bags, the price was good and were happy to be on our way, with only a small window early morning to add mulch. Every bag had white mold growing in them. I thought a brand like Scott's would have better control of the product. The planters look worse after the money and effort. Maybe it will wash off. The white on the left of the pile I dumped out of the bag shows the mold, and a closeup in my hands. Also Much had tape, and log stick in it, although this was minor compared to the mold. Would have been better off not mulching at all.

The mulch on the right was purchased today. Mulch on the left purchased 24 hours ago. Year long color guarantee???

We love Scotts earthgro and have used it for many years. We would normally rate a 5 but the fact that they now offer less for the same price is just ridiculous. Last year it was 2 cubic feet and now it is 1.5 cubic foot.. 25% less. So it will be the last year we ever buy this again.

We chose this brand because it looked like bigger pieces that would look more natural and stay in place. We purchased 53 bags on sale, so glad to have the savings so we could do this project. There were only 2 tiny one inch shreds of plastic in 53 bags, and it smells natural and looks very nice. It goes down dark brown, and where we had mulched around shrubs last week, it lightened to a beautiful dark chestnut color. These camera shots are drenched in sun, it looks much darker than this right now after putting it down just last night. Can't stop looking at our beds. Thank you Scotts for helping us beautify our backyard.

Been using this mulch for a while and have always been happy. The color lasts through the year and does not seem to affect the plants. Put this down to protect some new bushes we just installed. Also adds a finishing touch. The mulch should help hold moister as I water everyday for awhile. Not sure why the mulch is so wet when I open the bag, makes it heavy and more difficult to spread as its clumpy. Minor issue , not enough to prevent me working and it dries just fine. A small amount of the pieces were black, and other very large, not mulched at all. I broke them up. I believe the bags are smaller by 25%, use to be 2 cubic foot now 1.5 cubic foot. The plus side is its easier to handle. I used 7 bags to cover an area 13 foot by 6 foot that had no existing mulch. Still a good value for the price.

We applied 5 bags of this on 9/2/2020. after about a month in the late summer/early fall, the part that is in the sun was noticeably faded, you can see this in the pictures. these 2 areas were applied on the same day, and are about 15-20 feet apart. Look how faded the one picture is compared to the other. Product has a year long color guarantee but what am i supposed to do? Put it all in a trash bag and bring it back to the store?

I was shipped my 2 large orders a week apart (80 bags and 120 bags). The color of the mulch was completely different (see photo) with the 2nd shipment. It is disappointing that you can order at two different times and get different lots with different colors. Manufacturing quality control must be lacking.

We purchased an entire pallet of this mulch as we have done every year for about five years. However, this year, we have had to spend hours picking trash out of the mulch! Awful really.... if you are wanting to beautify your landscape, pass on this product. So much trash!!!!

The color is not consistent. Some brown bags are black, some have different shades of brown. Many bags have mold in them. Home Depot has told me they have had many complaints about this. Many of the bags I have bought had mulch in them. Disappointed in Scotts brand and Home Depot for continuing to sell this inferior product.

We purchased a few bags of Scott s Brown mulch to place around trees and shrubs in front of my house! These bags have a strong foul, barn like odor!! Also this morning a swarm of flies were all around the mulch right beneath my Windows!! A few weeks ago I bought the same kind of mulch but did not have this horrible smell! Has something changed?

I like the product because it appears to be triple shredded. However, there use to be more in each bag. I'm sure there use to be a 1/2 cubic foot more in my past purchases. The Vigoro is a better value, but their brown is darker which I don't like

I have used this same mulch every year for many years. This year the odor was foul. My yard smelled like a barn. I couldn't open my windows as the horrible smell went through my whole house. I also noticed many patches of white throughout several bags. Will not purchase this mulch next year.

Lovely color, exactly what I needed for my front garden! Easy to spread and maintain.
